VERGENNES — A Vergennes traffic stop resulted in the arrest of two Ferrisburgh residents on Saturday night.
At about 11 p.m. that evening Vergennes police pulled over a car that proved to have an unlicensed driver, and police ended up driving the operator to his home on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh.
When they arrived, police said a woman came out and accused the man of assaulting her. Vergennes police then called Vermont State Police, who have jurisdiction in Ferrisburgh, and VSP arrested the man, whom they identified as John Whitier, 32.
In the meantime, city police identified the woman as Kara Lee Zimmerman, 32, and discovered there was a warrant for her arrest in Broward County, Fla., for grand theft. Police then arrested Zimmerman and lodged her in the Chittenden County Correctional Center, where on Tuesday they said she was awaiting extradition to Florida.
Police also took two children at the home to Essex to stay with relatives.
In other action between July 25 and 31, Vergennes police:
•  On July 25 checked out a complaint that several juveniles were making a woman uncomfortable at Falls Park, but found no problem.
•  On July 26 were told a cell phone and $8 had been stolen from a pickup truck parked at Falls Park; a public works employee later found the cell phone nearby.
•  On July 26 received a report that a confused woman experiencing chest pains was somewhere in a Vergennes parking lot; police found her in the Agency of Transportation commuter lot in Ferrisburgh with her seat belt wrapped around her neck. They determined she was despondent and called for the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to take her to Fletcher Allen Health Care for evaluation.
•  On July 26 were told of a possibly suicidal man at the Stevens House and determined he had taken an excessive amount of sleeping pills; police called VARS to take him to Porter Hospital.
•  On July 26 escorted an unruly man out of traffic court while in Middlebury.
•  On July 26 stopped a car on behalf of VSP and learned its operator was experiencing medical problems.
•  On July 26 issued tickets to two Northlands Job Corps students for underage drinking near the Otter Creek falls.
•  On July 27 turned a 15-year-old Poultney resident over to the Department of Children and Families after he and his parents had a dispute while visiting Vergennes; police said the teen, who was in DCF custody but being allowed to stay with his family, was kicked out of their car while in the city.
•  On July 27 took a report that eggs had been thrown at a Booth Woods home.
•  On July 27 helped Hinesburg police by citing a New Haven Road resident to appear in Chittenden County court.
•  On July 27 accepted two bags of apparently new tools found by a Country Home Products employee near railroad tracks not far from the Meigs Road firm. Police determined the tools had been taken from the building once occupied by Vergennes Building Supply, and that someone had broken into and been living in that building. Police said the case remains under investigation.
•  On July 27 told one female Northlands student to stop sending threatening text messages to another female Northlands student, an action taken following a complaint.
•  On July 28 looked into a bad check complaint filed by a city car dealer.
•  On July 28 helped along with VARS an elderly MacDonough Drive man who had an allergic reaction to a bee sting.
•  On July 28 were told by a John Graham Shelter official that three checks had been stolen from the shelter and cashed at Shaw’s Supermarket, totaling $160. The case remains under investigation.
•  On July 28, after receiving a tip from an acquaintance, took a man threatening suicide from Jersey Street in Panton to Porter Hospital to meet with the Counseling Service of Addison County.
•  On July 29 calmed a family fight on East Street.
•  On July 29 dealt with a minor two-car accident in the Champlain Farms parking lot.
•  On July 30 dealt with a minor two-car accident at Alden Place.
•  On July 31 responded to a 1:30 a.m. report of a fight in the Champlain Farms parking lot, but found no problem.
•  On July 31 checked whether a $100 bill was valid on behalf of a city business, and advised the business to let the bank decide the matter.
•  On July 31 accepted a wallet that a citizen found, and returned it to its owner.
•  On July 31 helped VARS with a Shaw’s customer who had fallen.
