Bristol couple arrested after Hinesburg shooting incident
BRISTOL — Vermont State Police arrested two Bristol residents on drug and aggravated assault charges on Wednesday following a shooting incident in Hinesburg.
The incident stemmed from a complaint from Shawn Holbrook, 34, of Hinesburg, who alleged he was shot at on Wednesday at about 12:30 a.m. while driving his vehicle near the intersection of Route 116 and Mechanicsville Road in Hinesburg. Police confirmed two bullet holes in the driver’s side door and were subsequently able to recover evidence of the shooting at the scene.
VSP, in collaboration with Bureau of Criminal Investigation detectives, said they learned that Holbrook had been involved in a drug-related altercation with Dean Heffernan, 27, and his wife Katherine Heffernan, 26, at their Bristol residence during the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 2.
Police allege the couple followed Holbrook to Hinesburg and shot into his vehicle, but that no one was injured during the incident.
Troopers set up a perimeter around the Heffernans’ residence in Bristol and ultimately located them at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday during a traffic stop in Bristol near their home.
VSP executed a search warrant at the couple’s residence, which resulted in the discovery of heroin, hashish, and prescription pills, according to police.
Dean Heffernan was arrested on the charges of aggravated assault and possession of narcotics. He was scheduled to be lodged for a bail amount that was not disclosed by press time.
Katherine Heffernan was issued a citation to appear in Addison County District Court on Aug. 29 to answer to a charge of possession of narcotics.
Police said the matter is still under investigation, with more information about the case likely to emerge in the coming days. It was an investigation that saw a lot of VSP cruisers traveling in and around Bristol village on Wednesday morning.
