ROANOKE, Ala. — A Middlebury man who has served as a volunteer firefighter for the Middlebury Fire Department was killed in a Wednesday morning car accident in Roanoke, Ala., while on vacation with his wife and two children.
According to The Randolph Leader of Alabama, a Toyota Sienna minivan being driven at about 8:45 a.m. by Adam Myers, 39, was struck by a Ford Explorer driven by a local resident.
According to police sources quoted by the Randolph Leader, the Explorer turned abruptly into the path of the minivan, and its driver, who was seriously injured, was at fault.
Myers’ wife, Caitlin Myers, a Middlebury College assistant professor of economics, and their 2- and 4-year-old sons were also hurt in the accident and were taken to a local hospital, according to the Randolph Leader.
The Myers family had reportedly been visiting family in Georgia and were heading to visit other family members in Tennessee.
Chief Rick Cole of the Middlebury Fire Department said on Friday that Caitlin and the two children were physically doing well now. Caitlin Myers and one of the boys had bumps and bruises, and the other child broke a leg. 
“It’s my understanding they are doing well and have been discharged from the hospital,” Cole said.
Cole said Myers had been a member of the department for seven or eight years, and was currently serving on its technical rescue team.
“He was a good firefighter, a good tech rescue person,” Cole said. “He was very dedicated to his children.”
Cole said he and members of the Middlebury department were was stunned and saddened by the news, especially because of Myers’ young children.
“It’s quite a shock to all the guys. It’s basically a member of the firefighting family,” he said. “It’s a loss. It hits them pretty hard.”
Friends and acquaintances of Caitlin and Adam Myers at the college were similarly moved by the tragedy.
“All of us at Middlebury College were shocked and saddened to hear about the accident that claimed the life of Adam Myers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Caitlin, their two sons, Adam’s family, and their many friends,” said Alison Byerly, Middlebury College provost and executive vice president, and professor of English and American literatures.
