ADDISON COUNTY — Orwell Republican Mark Young raised and spent the most of any of the Addison County candidates running for Vermont House or Senate seats in 2010.
Candidates had until Dec. 15 to file their final campaign finance reports closing out the 2010 elections.
Information on file at district clerk offices, Addison County Superior Court and the Vermont Secretary of State’s office showed Young raised $29,690 and spent $28,016 in his bid for one of Addison County and Brandon’s two state Senate seats. Young finished a close third, as incumbent Democrats Claire Ayer (raised $7,886, spent $4,671) of Weybridge and Harold Giard (raised $7,297, spent $6,734) of Bridport won re-election. Orwell Republican Andrea Ochs of Orwell finished fourth. She raised $5,165, of which she spent $3,837. The Secretary of State’s campaign finance Web site did not have a Dec. 15 report from independent candidate Robert Wagner of Ripton, who finished fifth.
Candidates who raise or spent more than $500 in a filing period must file the requisite forms with their district clerk or the Secretary of State’s office.
Others filing finance papers included:
• The four candidates who ran for the two House seats in Addison-4, which included Bristol. Figures show incumbent Democratic Reps. Mike Fisher of Lincoln and David Sharpe of Bristol raised $5,005 and $4,530, respectively. Fisher spent $5,461 and Sharpe spent $5,493. Both were re-elected. Bristol Republic Fred Baser raised $5,419 and spent $4,980, while fellow Bristol Republican John “Peeker” Heffernan raised $809 and spent $911. Like Sharpe and Fisher, Heffernan had some funds carry over from his previous election.
• Incumbent Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, raised $8,238 and spent $7,455 in her successful re-election run in Addison-3. Hers was the only Dec. 15 form available among the candidates in that district as the Addison Independent went to press. Reports for Rep. Greg Clark and challengers Kitty Oxholm and Liz Markowski were not available on the Secretary of State’s website.
• New Haven Republican Harvey Smith raised $4,960 and spent $5,281 in his successful run for the Addison-5 House seat. Weybridge Democrat Spence Putnam raised and spent $10,548.
• In the uncontested two-seat district representing Middlebury, incumbent Democrat Betty Nuovo raised $525 and spent $339; and Democratic newcomer Paul Ralston raised $6,327 and spent $6,263.
• In the Addison-Rutland-1 district, reports for Independent Will Stevens of Shoreham and GOP challenger Joy Jones of Whiting were not available on the Secretary of State’s website.
• A campaign finance report for Democratic Rep. Willem Jewett of Ripton, who was re-elected in an uncontested race, was not available on the Secretary of State’s website.
• Brandon Rep. Joe Acinapura, who is a Republican but was nominated by both major parties, raised $3,128 and spent $932.
