MUHS field hockey advances in playoffs
BURLINGTON — The No. 6 Middlebury Union High School field hockey team knocked off No. 11 Burlington, 2-0, on Wednesday in a first-round Division I playoff game. The contest was played on Burlington’s artificial turf field because the Tigers’ home surface was too wet.
Sara Higgins scored about three minutes into the game, converting a Katie Ritter feed to give the Tigers the lead. Later in the half, Ritter made it 2-0 with an assist from Tiffany Audet.
Tiger goalies Heather Ploof (seven saves) and Anjelica Swinhart (three saves) teamed up for the shutout against the 0-15 Seahorses.
The 7-5-3 Tigers advance to a quarterfinal on Saturday at 11 a.m. vs. No. 3 Essex (10-3-1). The Hornets defeated the Tigers twice this fall, 3-2 in Middlebury and 3-1 at Essex.
