Supercuts to open in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The owners of The Centre plaza on Route 7 south confirmed last week that a Supercuts hair styling business will occupy a space in the shopping complex later this spring.
“I would expect them to open in around three months,” said Chris Hunt of Myron Hunt Inc., the company that owns The Centre.
The space in question is around 1,500 square feet and was previously occupied by a liquor store, according to Hunt.
“It’s a good addition to the overall shopping center,” Hunt said of Supercuts, which currently operates more than 2,100 stores nationwide. “It’s a use we didn’t have before.”
The addition of Supercuts comes in the wake of some recent departures from The Centre. Fashion Bug ended its more-than-two-decade run in the shopping center a few months ago, while the Movie Gallery is on its way out.
Hunt said the Movie Galley and Fashion Bug departures reflect a recent downsizing trend on the part of those two national chain stores.
“It isn’t a function of this location, it’s the overall business,” he said of those changes.
The closing of the Movie Gallery follows the exit of Moovies in Bristol. Video and DVD stores nationwide have been feeling the effects of competition from online movie sources like “Netflix” and the DVD rental boxes that have been popping up outside of many supermarkets. The Movie Gallery in February filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a second time in February. The company has been closing many of its store locations, which once numbered 2,400 nationwide.
Supercuts bills itself as an affordable, full-service hair-care business for men, women and children. It opened its first salon in California in 1976. Around 80 new Supercuts stores opened across the country in 2009.
Supercuts enters a Middlebury market that currently includes two barber shops and eight beauty salons, according to the yellow pages listings in the 2010 Addison County Community Phone Book.
Hunt said he continues to discuss other Centre vacancies — including the impending Movie Gallery spot — with several potential tenants.
