Final deer numbers drop 18 percent

ADDISON COUNTY — With the addition of deer killed during the muzzleloader season that concluded this past Sunday, Addison County weigh stations handled 840 deer this fall during bow, muzzleloader and rifle seasons, plus Youth Hunting Weekend.
That total falls well short of 2008’s final tally of 1,026. The 186 fewer deer weighed in Addison County translates to an overall drop of 18.1 percent, with decreases across the board:
• The combined bow and muzzleloader seasons total this year was 448, a 14.7 percent decline from 2008.
• The 2009 rifle season total of 301 dropped by 87 from last year, or 22.4 percent.
• The 2009 Youth Hunting Weekend total of 91 deer represented a 19.5 percent decrease from 2008’s total.
Although the number dropped from 2008, it still was 9.4 percent more than 2007’s total of 767.
Weigh station operators cited several factors for the drop from 2008, which reversed a generally upward trend locally in recent years since state laws changed to limit shooting spikehorn bucks, thus increasing, after one down year, the number of trophy animals hunters could target. (Statewide numbers are generally not available for many weeks after the final season ends, when all weigh stations send in and officials inspect information.)
Chief among them were uncooperative weather, especially during the first weekend of November’s 16-day rifle season, when typically 40 percent of that season’s bucks are shot. That Saturday in particular rain and cold sent many hunters home early.
Also, lack of snow for the entire rifle season and all but the end of muzzleloader season meant limited tracking. In fact, muzzleloader season closed with a surge after late snow allowed that strategy.
Warm weather and plentiful food also meant that deer did not have to move far or often to eat, said weigh station operators. Dick Phillips of Vermont Field Sports in Middlebury said many hunters now also use tree stands rather than move through the woods, with the result that another motivator for deer to move is reduced.
No deer taken in the bow or the muzzleloader seasons matched the 236-pound, eight-point buck shot by Shoreham’s Tommy Davis in his hometown during the opening weekend of rifle season. That animal was the largest killed by a county hunter in at least 10 years and the largest taken in the state in five years.
Shoreham’s Mike Mulligan also took home a trophy buck on opening weekend, a 223-pounder with eight antler points also shot in his hometown.
Only one deer came close to those in either bow or muzzleloader season, a six-point buck shot in muzzleloader season by David Cavoretto in Lincoln and weighed at the Jerusalem Corners Store in Starksboro. It tipped the scales at 207 pounds, but had not yet had the heart, lungs and liver removed.
The following hunters had deer weighed at Vermont Field Sports, Jerusalem Corners Store, Lincoln General Store, Panton General Store, West Addison General Store, Buxton’s Store in Orwell, Village Green Market in New Haven, C&S Hunting Supplies in East Middlebury, or Midstate Shooting Sports Inc. in Ferrisburgh. Town of kill, pounds, gender of deer and points if relevant are also listed.
