HARTFORD — Swimmers from the Middlebury Aquatic Club Panthers and the Vergennes Champs fared well at this past weekend’s Vermont Swim Association 2009 Championships, held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in Hartford.
For the Panthers, Gracie Weinberg won four under-10 girls’ races, and the under-12 boys’ 200-yard medley relay team of Chandler Devaney, Bobby Ritter, Cullen Hathaway and Nathan Lalonde swam to a win by eight-hundredths of a second in that event.
Champs’ highlights included the efforts of Harlie Vincent, 12, who finished second in one girls’ race and fourth in three; Zeke Palmer, 8, who led a strong showing by the younger Vergennes boys by placing in six events, including two relays; Charlie Johnston, 16, who claimed one second- and two fourth-place finishes; and Chris Cantin, 18, who took a third, a fourth and a sixth.
The larger Panthers’ team competed in Division II and took second in that division with 1,363 points behind Burlington Country Club (1,500). The Panthers were fifth overall in the state out of the 21 teams at the meet, which was won by Champlain Valley Swim League champion Burlington Tennis Club with 3,061 points, well ahead of the Knights in second (2,120) and Town of Essex Swim Team in third (2,080.5).
The Champs were fourth in Division IV with 631.5 points. There were five divisions in all.
