Summer Escape: Open Water Swimming

MIDDLEBURY — Monday, July 2, brought this year’s Olympic swimming trials to a close. Audience members in Omaha saw some of the most decorated athletes in the world compete for the top three spots in each event, in hopes of taking them to London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

First place: Monica McEnerny shot this photo of the inside of this red tulip in her backyard in Middlebury. The vibrant colors and close-up perspective caught the eye of the judges.

Staff Blog: Yuki Takeda, whistling champion

Yuki Takeda isn't your average casual whistler. Earlier this month, he returned from the International Whistlers Conference in Louisburg, North Carolina with a third place trophy.

Takeda, a Middlebury College sophomore, has been attending the prestigious whistling conference since 2008, winning first place in teen divisions in 2010 and 2011. He competes in both the classical and popular divisions, but says his favorite thing to whistle is jazz improvization. Back home in Middlebury, he's performing with his jazz quintet at 51 Main from 10 to 12 p.m. tonight.
