VERMONT — On Friday afternoon, the Vermont Secretary of State’s office released its eagerly awaited (but still unofficial) tally of the votes cast in Tuesday’s Democratic gubernatorial primary. Though the numbers won’t be certified until early next week, this count placed Peter Shumlin 197 votes ahead of runner-up Doug Racine.

Middlebury Trailrunner: Skylight Pond

Posted on August 17, 2010 | Blog Category:
By Jeff Byers

My last last few blogged runs were on the long side, requiring a fairly high degree of organization and car shuttling to pull off, making them relatively rare treats for those with a little extra time on their hands. This run, however, requires much less choreography – just a short drive up the mountain from Middlebury to get to the trailhead, and thus can be done without a lot of extra driving. This is also a relatively straightforward “up and down” route, on easy to follow trails, requiring no map, and not a lot of knowledge of the topography. The catch?

Middlebury Trailrunner: An equally grand Moosalamoo traverse

Posted on August 11, 2010 | Blog Category:
By Jeff Byers

Given the myriad of routes through the Moosalamoo region, and the great running weather, I thought it would be fun to try yet another long run bisecting this region and concluding at the Falls of Lana trailhead. My two lab assistants, Jack and Tyler, were also eager to explore some new terrain, so we decided to do another run involving a car shuttle. The original plan was to commence the run from the Robert Frost trailhead off of Route 125, but upon our arrival, we noted barriers across the trailhead announced that it was closed to the public due to the ongoing road construction.

Trent Roleau, Hero

I never thought my personal hero would be younger than me. But I've come to believe that Trent Roleau, 21, is either Addison County's incarnation of Achilles or a modern day Perseus. I'm not quite sure which.

Back in the day he led the Mount Abe basketball team to a state championship. More recently, I profiled him as part of my Making a Life in Addison County series, and he told me about his plans to start a small-scale diversified farm in Lincoln. Intrepid stuff.

Table Talk: Vergennes Laundry

Posted on July 22, 2010 | Blog Category:
By Andrea Suozzo

Last week the old Vergennes Laundromat on Main Street was mostly empty, except for a few stacks of boards and the hum of power tools emerging from the open doors.

Inside, 25-year-old Julianne Jones and fiancé Didier Murat were working atop the newly poured concrete floors, cutting and measuring the wood that would become the bathroom walls. Along the wall in the middle of the long room was a platform, sitting at the ready for the brick oven that will form the centerpiece of Jones’s bakery when it opens in September.

Below is a Spanish translation of a July 19 article, Mexican officials visit Middlebury. Over 100 Mexican immigrants met with consulate officials in a Middlebury church to apply for passports and "matricula" residency cards. Various local organizations were also on hand to offer legal advice, health care and domestic abuse counseling. Special thanks to J.P. Allen for helping with this translation.
