MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College women’s hockey coach Bill Mandigo said after Saturday’s home game vs. Williams he didn’t believe his team had played its best.

But the Ephs might need a little convincing: The Panthers outshot Williams, 33-10, in a 3-0 win that ended their first semester. Middlebury, ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division III poll, improved to 6-0, 5-0 NESCAC, while the Ephs fell to 1-4 overall and in the league.

ADDISON COUNTY — Although none of the local girls’ high school soccer teams finished above .500, all four had fine moments and benefited from outstanding individual contributions that are recognized here in the 2010 Addison Independent Girls’ Soccer All-Star Team.

Coach Dwight Irish’s Vergennes squad had the most success, compiling a .500 regular season and earning a home playoff game. They were sparked by, among others, high-scoring junior Kenadi Dattilio, the 2010 Addison Independent Player of the Year, and three other Commodores who are recognized here.

ADDISON COUNTY — The year 2010 proved not one to go down in the record books for the local high school boys’ soccer teams. All had bright moments, especially early in the season, but ultimately none finished above .500 or won a postseason game.

All four were buoyed by strong individual efforts from players who showed talent, leadership and positive attitude. They are recognized here in the 2010 Addison Independent Boys’ Soccer All-Star Team, including high-scoring Player of the Year Timo Krekeler, a Middlebury Union High School junior.

Vincent 'building up' to new level

NEW HAVEN — A sport that requires competitors to go on strict diets, follow intense exercise regimens and pose on stage in barely there beachwear — their bodies coated in oily cooking spray — may not be for everyone.

But 17-year-old Mount Abraham Union High School senior Paige Vincent of New Haven considers it her sport of choice.

Vincent recently switched from competing in bodybuilding to competing in figure competitions — a sport that she says is more “feminine.” While in the same division as bodybuilding, figure judges look more closely at the symmetry of the muscles in the body.

MIDDLEBURY — For the first time since 1993, the Middlebury College men’s hockey team stands at 0-2. And those two losses came in Kenyon Arena on Friday and Saturday to Tufts and Connecticut College, respectively, teams against which the Panthers had a collective record of 38-8-2 entering the weekend.

But more puzzling to Middlebury Coach Bill Beaney than the results — Friday’s 3-0 loss to Tufts and Saturday’s 5-3 setback to Conn. College — was the way he said the Panthers played.

After Saturday’s loss, Beaney talked about what he saw as the Panthers’ lack of fire and effort.

CASTLETON — In Saturday night’s Division II final at Castleton State College, the top-seeded Middlebury Union High School football ran into what Coach Dennis Smith afterward called a buzzsaw.

With senior quarterback Christian McCormick (303 yards and four touchdowns passing) leading the way, the No. 3 Knights (10-1) scored 22 straight second-half points to break open a 16-14 game and win, 38-20.
