MIDDLEBURY — Basketball teams don’t win too many games in which they fail to score a basket in two of four quarters.

But they can if, like the Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team did on Friday night against visiting Burr & Burton, they also play tough defense and hit enough free throws.

Despite sinking only free throws in the second and fourth quarters and at one point failing to score a basket for more than 13 minutes, MUHS outlasted the Bulldogs, 41-37.

VERGENNES — A Vergennes Union High School basketball team with high hopes for this season took a step forward on Tuesday when the Commodores hung on for a 67-62 win over visiting Division I foe South Burlington.

VUHS (2-0) had led by 12 late in the third quarter, but the 0-1 Rebels repeatedly penetrated the lane and cut the lead to two three times in the final three minutes.

BRISTOL — Saturday’s high school girls’ basketball game between Mount Abraham and Mill River started out looking like a breeze for the host Eagles, but it ended with the Eagles having to make several clutch plays in the final minutes to pull out a 37-35 win.

In the opener for both squads, Mount Abe allowed MRU to score just three first-half hoops on the way to a 21-11 lead at the break.

MIDDLEBURY — Once it became clear before Tuesday night’s game in Pepin Gymnasium that injured Johnson & Wales senior guard Lamonte Thomas, the leading scorer in NCAA Division III men’s basketball, would not play against Middlebury College, the focus even more narrowed on the news the Panthers made earlier in the day.

That was when the most recent D-III poll came out, and Coach Jeff Brown’s group sat on top, ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history.

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s difficult to evaluate the relative impact of a hard-working scorer and a vital defender on the success of a soccer team.

In the case of the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ squad this fall the task proved virtually impossible, other than to say that both senior striker Grayson Webb and senior sweeper Zack Ellison played key roles as Coach Mike Corey’s Eagles reached the Division II semifinals.

MIDDLEBURY — Despite outshooting both opponents, the Middlebury College men’s hockey team this past weekend in the Primelink Great Northern Shootout in Kenyon Arena settled for a loss and a tie against a pair of opponents who entered the tournament ranked in the top-10 in NCAA Division III.

On Friday, No. 10 Elmira edged the No. 11 Panthers, 3-2, and in Saturday’s consolation game the Panthers and No. 6 Plattsburgh skated to a 0-0 tie.

MIDDLEBURY — Seniors from Middlebury, Otter Valley and Mount Abraham union high schools played well in and enjoyed Saturday’s 11th Annual North-South All-Star Football Game, hosted by Middlebury College.

The four Tigers and two Otters may have enjoyed the game a little more than the Eagle representative, as their South team erupted after a scoreless first half to claim a 35-8 victory.

Turkey, coyote, bobcat...but not a deer in sight

It is the third day of the 2011 rifle season for deer. I’m sitting in a folding chair inside my hunting tent atop a small hill. In terms of my chances of success, I’d be better off 12 feet up in my tree stand rather than on the ground in a tent. I can see a lot farther from a dozen feet up in the air. Plus, my scent dissipates from a tree stand rather than lingering on the ground and warning deer of my presence.
