Ferrisburgh 10-year-old's catch now official Vermont record

FERRISBURGH — A carp caught in April by a young Ferrisburgh resident was recently certified by the Department of Fish & Wildlife as a state record.

Chase Stokes, 10, who has at least twice been certified by Fish & Wildlife officials as a Vermont Master Angler, caught the 33.25-pound carp in Otter Creek in Panton on April 29. It measured 40 inches in length and had a total girth of 26.5 inches at its widest point, according to a Fish & Wildlife press release.

From Panther guard to Cavaliers general manager

CLEVELAND — A former Middlebury College men’s basketball point guard became LeBron James’ boss last week.

Koby Altman, a 2004 graduate who started 42 games for Coach Jeff Brown’s Panthers in his four-year career, including 17 of 22 games as a senior, was named the general manager of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers on July 24.

Middlebury coaches take jobs at California schools

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College women’s tennis coach Mike Morgan and former Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer coach Jen Clark, husband and wife, have both left Middlebury for head coaching jobs at California colleges.

Morgan, the Panther women’s tennis coach for the past 11 years, is taking over the women’s tennis program at Pomona-Pitzer College, while Clark, who led the Tiger girls from 2007 to 2010, will coach the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s soccer team.

Turkey season successful, according to state officials

MONTPELIER — A preliminary report from Vermont Fish & Wildlife shows that hunters had a banner season this spring with the highest turkey harvest ever recorded. Hunters brought home 6,570 wild turkeys during the spring hunting season, including 743 turkeys taken during the April youth weekend hunt.

MIDDLEBURY — On any given summer day up on Chipman Hill, pedestrians, mountain bikers, runners and their four-legged companions travel through the trees, grateful for the 132-acre forest’s peace and quiet less than a 10-minute walk from Middlebury town center. The town forests — Chipman Hill, Means Woods and Battell Woods — are available for all to enjoy, but, until now, have not been managed under any overarching plan.

Locals help Babe Ruth team win state title

WINOOSKI — A Babe Ruth all-star team including five Addison County residents earlier this month won the Vermont Under-14 championship and then this past weekend represented the state in the New England regional tournament.

Champlain Valley Babe Ruth League all-stars Barret Barrows, Neil Guy, Carter Monks, Cameron Sprigg and Tucker Stearns played for the Vermont District II Babe Ruth U14 All-Star team that claimed the state title in a double-elimination tournament played in Winooski on July 7, 8, 9 and 15.

Quenneville wins again at Devil's Bowl

WEST HAVEN — Devil’s Bowl Speedway action this past Saturday night was highlighted by Brandon’s Vince Quenneville Jr.’s second-straight win in Sportsman Modifieds feature race.

Quenneville’s win in a 25-lap event was also his third of the year in the Sportsman Modifieds. He needed only three laps to move from his fifth-place starting position to first and then sailed to victory. Fair Haven’s Billy Lussier took second place.

Burlington edges Middlebury in swim finale

BURLINGTON — The Champlain Valley Swim League regular season wrapped up on Tuesday, when host Burlington Country Club outlasted the Middlebury Swim Team, 252-219.

MST took an early 35-21 lead over BCC by winning five of eight contested medley relays. But BCC’s slightly greater depth allowed it to go on top, 72-70, after racing in the first discipline, the butterfly, and the hosts gradually stretched their lead from there. In all, BCC earned 21 first-place finishes to 19 for MST in a closely contested meet.

Legion baseball tops Essex to cap season

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County American Legion team finished what was an overall disappointing season in style on Friday at the Middlebury College field, knocking visiting Essex out of the playoffs with a 6-2 victory.

Essex needed to win a game that was a makeup of an earlier rainout to finish fourth and earn the final Northern Division playoff berth, but the pitching of AC ace Adam Whitcomb and a five-run AC fifth inning denied the perennial Legion powerhouse the chance to advance.

Editor’s note: Matt Dickerson was an official artist in residence at Glacier National Park in Montana last month. This is the fourth in a series on his experience there.

I arose at 3:40 a.m. on my final full day at Glacier National Park. Twenty minutes later I walked out the door with a thermos of coffee, picnic lunch, daypack and various cameras, heading up to the Continental Divide on the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road.
