Editorial: Sen. Bray gets to the point on funding lake cleanup

Posted on December 7, 2017 |
By Angelo Lynn

Sen. Chris Bray’s idea to create a per-parcel fee to help pay for the cleanup of Lake Champlain and its related waterways addresses the elephant in the room that others have failed to do: find a way to raise the long-term money needed to accomplish the task.

An advisory council formed to make funding recommendations outlined vague suggestions of what to consider in a funding mechanism, but had dodged the nut of the issue.

Letter to the Editor: Mount Abe board could lease existing facility, build new

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By Stephen Harris

The bond request of $35 million to renovate Mt. Abe has failed twice. I believe that the request is asking for too much money to be invested in the wrong place. The reconstruction of the 50-year-old Mt. Abe building does not address three important background facts:

1. The community cannot afford this request.

2. Mt. Abe ranks number 33 of 55 public high schools in Vermont (by 2017 test results).

3. The student body is shrinking because the region is losing young adults due to lack of opportunity.

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By Dr. Carrie Wulfman

This week’s Community Forum is written by Dr. Carrie Wulfman, a Primary Care Provider at UVMHN, Primary Care-Brandon, in Brandon, VT.

My career as a family practice physician working in Vermont spans nearly two decades. I have been a practicing physician at Porter’s Brandon Primary Care Office (formerly Neshobe Family Medicine) for 18 years and I have seen many changes in medical practice over these years.

Letter to the Editor: Most cats perfectly happy indoors

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By Jessica Danyow

Got Cats?

Like many Middlebury animal lovers, I’ve been following the recent Front Porch Forum discussion about indoor versus outdoor cats. There are well-meaning people on both sides of the issue who are sharing what they see as best meeting the needs of different kind of animals and we applaud that!

Editorial: Dems not the same as GOP!

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, a popular lament among voters was that both political parties were equally bad, and that Democrats were not that much different from Republicans. Many voters cast a pox on both parties and Republicans, in particular, rejected 16 other candidates in their primary to pick one of the least experienced, least credible, least informed and most caustic candidates in the nation’s history.

Two years later, much has changed, including a dramatically clearer distinction between the two major political parties.

Editorial: Chili Fest is out, what's next?

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In a letter elsewhere on this page, Cornwall resident Bill Bierderman laments the cancellation of the Chili Festival, usually held in March in Middlebury’s downtown. Folks from all over have gathered for a mid-winter chance to congregate, chat and interact in what has been a truly fun event.

Letter to the Editor: Citizens have responsibility to be informed on civic matters

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Sharon Compagna

I am continually reading about folks thinking particular items are “fast tracked,” which hints at something illegal or underhanded. The selectboard publishes their agenda and minutes openly and the natural gas issue was discussed several times over the last few years. An agreement was entered into before I even got off the board.

Letter to the Editor: What about a 'no confidence vote' on Trump?

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Pat Ullom

Donald Trump has a disapproval rating of approximately 70 percent of the American public. He has no interest, knowledge, or regard for the Constitution, Democracy or the Rule of Law. He has proven himself to be corrupt, a habitual liar, and a self-centered, out his control child with no interest or compassion for human life. His adolescent insults and criticisms of people and world leaders makes him an embarrassment and a danger to the world.

Letter to the Editor: Loss of street events lamented

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Bill Biederman

So sorry to hear about the cancelling of the Chili Festival on Main Street in Middlebury. It had always been a great way to see neighbors and friends and to see the students from the college downtown enjoying themselves. They cancelled the beer festival a few years back and that was another event that brought people downtown and in from other places in Vermont. These were both events that were good for the members of the community and gave the town of Middlebury some exposure to folks that were otherwise just driving through.
