Letter to the editor: Smith has shown good judgment, deserves re-election

Posted on November 3, 2016 |
By Charlie Roy

Please join me in re-electing Harvey Smith as our state representative.

Harvey Smith has been very active in our community for many years as a farmer and business owner. He is a justice of the peace. He is moderator, deacon and a trustee of the New Haven Congregational Church. He represents New Haven on the Addison County Regional Planning Commission and is currently our state representative in Montpelier.

Letter to the editor: Nine reasons to vote for Hillary

Posted on November 1, 2016 |
By Gale Hurd

I know you don’t like Hillary. I don’t like her all that much either... but I’ll be voting for her on Nov. 8 because a vote for Hillary is a vote for: the Environmental Protection Agency, Social Security, the Voting Rights Act, Roe vs. Wade, Marriage Equality, the Community Development Fund, PBS, National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, and reasonable voices on the Supreme Court. We need her to be elected.

Letter to the editor: Democrats and Progressives best hope to move forward

Posted on November 1, 2016 |
By David Andrews

The upcoming election, in which some of us have already voted, is critical both nationally and also for the State of Vermont. The importance of voting for sanity and against racism and misogyny in the presidential contest should be obvious. But I believe that the statewide contests also merit our attention and concern.

Letter to the editor: Lanpher walks the walk, honestly

Posted on November 1, 2016 |
By Paula Moore

Earlier this year, I was working on a state grant for my town. We were told that having a letter of support from a local legislator would strengthen our application. The legislator who immediately came to mind was Diane Lanpher, who emailed me a signed letter the next day. Wow!

Letter to the editor: Lanpher dishonest on carbon tax

Posted on November 1, 2016 |
By Cheryl McEwen

Diane Lanpher is being dishonest with her constituents regarding the Carbon Tax. I recently emailed her with a simple question asking whether or not she supported this tax. She responded by email saying, “Have not heard of any carbon tax proposal…. There is nothing for me to comment on at the moment. If you are aware of any specifics, please let me know about it.”

Letter to the editor: A reflection on Halloween and on this year's election

Posted on October 31, 2016 |
By Larry Jones

This year the calendar makes perfect sense:

Election Day and Hallowe’en are close.

For 18 months we’ve had a hefty dose

Of vitriol and wickedness immense.

But each November all the ghouls go hence;

We take down sheets and jack o’lanterns gross.

If Hallowe’en has left us comatose,

At least no one has taken great offense.

Guest editorial: Why your vote counts – a lot

Posted on October 31, 2016 |
By Haviland Smith

Those of us who are not highly partisan voters are faced this year with a choice between two unusually unattractive candidates. Some of us will take a deep breath, suck it up and vote for the one we believe to be less unattractive. Others say they simply will not vote at all.

The polls would seem to show that many of those who have made the decision not to vote are younger people who facing their first or second elections.

Letter to the editor: Nice guy, but Ferrisburgh candidate's too doom & gloom

Posted on October 31, 2016 |
By Cheryl Brinkman

Are you represented? I like Warren Van Wyck and his family, they are nice people. But does he truly represent us? After listening to a candidate forum here in Vergennes, I realized how very negative his views are regarding our economy, our schools, our business climate, our energy potential and the future of Vermont. It is all doom and gloom.

Letter to the editor: Bruhl understands 'complexities' of farming, economy

Posted on October 31, 2016 |
By Ben and Theresa Gleason

If wish I lived in Middlebury just so I could vote for Robin Scheu for state rep. What I can most speak to about Robin is her collaborative and kind leadership style, which will serve our state well.

Robin and I have attended the same church for many years, where I have seen her calm and thoughtful leadership up close. She is articulate, smart, compassionate. The list of public and non-profit organizations for which she has provided effective leadership is truly impressive. She knows how to listen and respect all points of view.
