Opinion: Vt. gun laws in need of updating

Posted on March 4, 2015 |
By Bobbi Loney

In January 1,400 letters and 12,000 petition signatures were hand delivered in Montpelier in support of a bill to be sponsored by, among others, our Sen. Claire Ayer. The bill, S.31, is about to be re-drafted to focus on two of the three provisions originally included.

Opinion: Local control key in education spending

Posted on March 4, 2015 |
By Matthew Witten

Town Meeting on Saturday in Starksboro featured a lengthy discussion with key players in the state’s, the county’s and the town’s education deciders.

Joining our debate, in addition to our local school board, were Superintendent David Adams and Rep. Dave Sharpe, chair of the Vermont House Education Committee.

Editorial: Voters' message on school budgets — Keep moving forward

Posted on March 4, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

School budgets around the state, for the most part, fared better this year than last when 34 budgets were defeated in town meeting balloting. Why the difference? Largely because the average school budget increase was held to just under 3 percent, compared to much higher increases in 2014.

But there is also the perception that the Legislature is responding to the changing landscape caused by the steep decline in the number of students in Vermont (it’s down 21,000 in the past two decades), the low teacher-pupil ratios and the consequent high per-pupil cost.

Editorial: Bill promoting vaccinations deserves public support

Posted on March 2, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

With several cases of measles occurring in the state last year, there is an increasing risk that continuing philosophical exemptions to vaccinations could put Vermont’s public school children in harm’s way. That’s because Vermont’s vaccination rate is coming close to 90 percent, a dangerous territory because below that rate is when contagious diseases — like measles, mumps and small pox — take hold and spread.

Opinion: Brandon librarians and board ask for voters' support

Posted on March 2, 2015 |
By Molly Kennedy

The staff and board of the Brandon Free Public Library in Brandon are asking registered voters in the towns of Brandon and Forest Dale to please continue to support us by voting Yes for our budget appropriation on March 3.

Our budget totals $163,725. We raise almost half ($78,225) outside of town support, making our library one of the most self-sustaining libraries in Vermont. Our library is busy; we average over 200 users per day.

Opinion: Sheldon thanked for water bill vote

Posted on March 2, 2015 |
By Peter Diminico

I would like to thank Rep. Amy Sheldon for her vote and strong support for H.35. This water quality bill passed through the House Fish, Wildlife & Water Resources Committee with a resounding 7-2 vote, with Rep. Terenzin (Rutland) and Rep. Willhoit (St. Johnsbury) representing the opposing votes. This bill (pending,we have a long way to go) gives the Agency of Natural Resources and the Agency of Agriculture new powers with reasonable requirements to implement and enforce the clean water laws in the state of Vermont.

Opinion: Solar sets path to renewable future

Posted on March 2, 2015 |
By Kate Williams

When I moved to Vermont years ago I knew I needed to find a way to affordably heat my Leicester home. At the time fuel oil was my only option but just recently I learned of this virtuous combination of having a heat pump and solar panels heat your home.

I love the idea that these two work together to create renewable heating. The affordability of solar heat was enticing but more than anything I wanted a way to reduce my carbon footprint, to help reduce my contribution to climate change. But, my plan hit a snag. My home is too shaded for solar.

Jessie Raymond: Photos show a different side of winter

Posted on February 26, 2015 |
By Jessie Raymond

This hasn’t been the easiest of winters. Perhaps you’ve noticed.

Most years we at least get a January thaw, a few gentle days that bolster our spirits enough to get us through the miserable days still to come. This year, we’ve had approximately one day above freezing since Labor Day, and enough days below zero that I keep thinking my thermometer is broken. (If only.)
