Letter to the editor: May the best candidates win state Senate contest

Posted on October 22, 2018 |
By Nick Causton

I have been counting with interest the ratio of letter writers to the Addison Independent supporting Bray and Hardy compared to Audet and Ralston. At about 7 to 1, mainly from the “Big” town and associated non-gated suburbs, it either implies campaigning differentials, or a propensity to write a lot of letters in the big town, or a reluctance by rural Addison County residents to be outspoken.

Letter to the editor: Using Social Security to cover debts hasn't worked

Posted on October 22, 2018 |
By Michael Reeves

Once again the outcry from the current leadership in Washington is that entitlement programs, which they define as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, are the cause of the growing national debt and they need to be cut.

Dennis Wygmans, Addison County State’s Attorney, has deep and broad experience. He was appointed to the position in 2016 after spending four years in Addison County prosecuting cases of domestic and sexual violence. He previously had many years’ experience as a defense attorney and practicing corporate and entertainment law. Dennis is a native Vermonter and had a nearly 18-year career in the music industry before becoming a lawyer.

Letter to the editor: Rep. Sharpe supports Hardy, Bray for state Senate

Posted on October 22, 2018 |
By Dave Sharpe

I enthusiastically support and endorse Ruth Hardy to represent Addison County along with Sen. Chris Bray in the Vermont Senate. The job of Senator requires an individual with a broad understanding of the needs of Vermont citizens and the ability to collaborate with a relatively small number of colleagues who must cooperate in order to create quality and effective legislation. And, after the work is done, to be able to come home and explain what the legislature has accomplished to Vermonters at their doors, and in meetings such as the annual Town meetings.

Editorial: 'Deficits? Nonsense. Tax cuts will be so great, it'll never happen.'

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The U.S. Treasury Department announced this week that the federal deficit jumped a whopping 17 percent this past year, posting a deficit of $779 billion. That’s an increase of $113 billion over the $666 billion recorded in 2017, and it puts the deficit on pace to top $1 trillion annually before the next presidential election. Such a pronouncement used to shock Republicans out of their wits.

The Treasury’s own analysis suggest the rapid rise in the deficit has been caused by the $1.5 trillion tax cuts passed by Trump and the Republican Congress.

Editorial: A step closer to depravity

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

When President Trump first tries to cover up the blatant killing and gruesome dismemberment of a journalist critical of the Saudi government and then, when denial isn’t plausible, tries to pretend it wasn’t carried out under the orders of Saudi Arabia’s effective ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman but by rogue killers with the government, he moves America one step closer to the depravity demonstrated by the worst kind of dictatorial governments.

Ways of Seeing by Joanna Colwell: Love, and listen to, your neighbor

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

Colwell, Joanna ONLINE.jpg

My friend posted a photo of two men holding up a sign that read, “Love Your Neighbor. Even if they don’t: Look Like You. Think Like You. Love Like You. Pray Like You. Vote Like You.” My thoughts kept coming back to this sign. Finally I had to respond, “Even if you are voting to take away my human rights, I still gotta love you?” My friend responded to my comment that he had it on good authority, based on most of the world’s spiritual traditions, that yes, I do have to love that person.
