Opinion: Act 46 could use more coverage

Posted on May 12, 2016 |
By Peter Grant

At the meeting in Bristol last night over Act 46, it seems that there are a lot of questions about what it means.

One question concerned towns voting not to join the new and improved school districts. Seems the Legislature made the law a “take it or we will do it for you” system. Which left one open question, among many, and that was about a town dropping out of the district, like Huntington. Well, Huntington is in an area that modern news media doesn’t really cover, since we no longer have a regional/state paper.

Editorial: 2016 session: Balance of work is up to voters to determine

Posted on May 12, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If pundits and critics are lamenting a dearth of “big initiatives” this session, perhaps that’s OK — new initiatives, after all, usually cost money; and part of the goal this year was to limit spending to a sustainable level.

Opinion: Sorrell joins the 'global warmists'

Posted on May 12, 2016 |
By Alice Dubentsky

Is anyone surprised that Vermont’s Attorney General William Sorrell has joined forces with left-wing Democrat attorneys general to shake down Exxon Mobil for daring to express their skepticism about anthropomorphic global warming?

Ediorial: Session's end, public gains

Posted on May 9, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As the legislative session wrapped up this past Saturday, the governor’s scorecard was mixed: he failed to get his two signature initiatives of this session signed into law (legalizing marijuana and divesting from coal-related industries), but several other initiatives passed that he also championed.

Opinion: A duty to compensate hurt soldiers

Posted on May 9, 2016 |
By Elizabeth Roy

Dear Congress,

When my husband was gearing up to deploy in 2006 it was the scariest thing I had ever dealt with. He is the love of my life, and the thought of him going to war terrified me. At the time our three children were 5, 3 and 1. He was in Baghdad, Iraq, from July 2006-September 2007.

Victor Nuovo: Lucretius on Civilization and its Discontents

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo,Victor1754.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the 11th in a series of essays on Lucretius, an early philosopher who provides a link to “lost classics” through his epic poem “On the Nature of Things.”

Lucretius supposed that the human species is exceptional in one way only: we are, compared to other animals, ill prepared for life. It is left to us to find ways to achieve security and comfort; the product of our efforts is civilization.

Jessie Raymond: Trip plans hinged on luck of the Irish

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

In 2019, my husband Mark and I will reach a milestone: our 25th wedding anniversary. I want to celebrate with a trip.

It’s early yet, but I thought I’d better spring the idea on him sooner rather than later so (a) we’d have time to save up for this adventure, and (b) he could get used to the idea of leaving his Addison County comfort zone.

I want to go to Ireland.

Gregory Dennis: Phoning from the Land of Enchantment

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

When did everybody suddenly own a smart phone? We’ve gone from a world in which people sat and talked with one another to a world in which we sit side-by-side, ignoring each other and staring at our phones.

This may actually represent progress. Before we could access the interwebs on our phone, every mobile user seemed to think they were required to communicate by speaking loudly at all times — “cell yell,” they called it.
