Opinion: It's time for Vermont to take action on pot legalization bill

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Dave Silberman

In his April 14 column titled “It makes sense to go slow on pot bill,” Eric L. Davis makes several critical errors of fact and logic.

First, Davis claims that there has been evidence of an increase in underage marijuana use in Colorado following legalization. This is incorrect. Two comprehensive surveys of marijuana use have been conducted (including one by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), and neither found a statistically significant change in Colorado’s underage use rates following legalization.

Editorial: The Big Apple speaks, but here's how Bernie still wins

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the Democratic presidential primary, New York was a turning point for Hillary Clinton not only because it reversed the string of eight wins by the unexpectedly popular Sen. Bernie Sanders, but because she will enter the convention in July with a solid majority of delegates, as well as the bulk of the Super-delegates. There will likely be, in other words, little doubt as to which candidate has won the most state contests, the most delegates, and a solid majority of the popular vote by the time the convention convenes.

Opinion: We hold on to the green cotton skirt

By Priscilla Baker

When my friend learned that treatments were no longer working and the cancer was spreading throughout her body, she embraced the next and final chapter of her life with grace and equanimity. She had been a teacher and a writer whose great love was to inspire others in their journey of learning. Her last weeks of life held this lesson for me.

Opinion: Citizenship oath does not speak of caring, community

Posted on April 18, 2016 |
By Deborah Young

Yesterday I went to a naturalization ceremony at Beeman Elementary School in New Haven. It was, on the whole, a heartwarming and inspiring experience. Thirty-one people from all over the world becoming U.S. citizens. The teachers, students, staff and administration at Beeman, the music director and singers from Mount Abraham Union High School, the Girl Scouts, and members of the Bristol band, as well as Honorable Colleen A. Brown worked together to put on a creative, professional and welcoming ceremony. I felt proud to be a part of the community.

Community Forum: Reforms, taxes and Uncle Milton

Posted on April 18, 2016 |
By William J. Mathis

This week’s writer is William J. Mathis, managing director of the National Education Policy Center and a member of the Vermont State Board of Education.

Somewhere in everybody’s family tree is an Uncle Milton. Always smiling and backslapping, he treats everyone like his favorite nephew, and no wish is too much for his generosity. Enjoying the flattery, he takes the family out for dinner. It has happened too many times to be a coincidence but when the check comes, he’s always gone to the restroom.

Opinion: Use of Roundup threatens health

Posted on April 18, 2016 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Last week I received in the mail someTrue ValueReward coupons that I could redeem at my local hardware store. I cut out the RoundUp coupon and mailed it back to the hardware store. I requested that the hardware store take RoundUp off its shelves, along with any other herbicide containing glyphosate. In March 2015, the United Nations’ World Health Organization stated that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” I told the hardware store to stop taking chances with our health.

Editorial: Public outrage puts primary system in the crosshairs

Posted on April 14, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

That Americans are upset with the way delegates are counted in each party’s presidential primaries might be one of the understatements of the year. Voters are livid, and rightfully so. After all, when a candidate wins 55 percent of the vote in a state and splits the delegates equally, voters supporting the winner should be surprised, if not outraged. That is the case with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., when he took Wyoming by that margin last Saturday and yet basically split the delegate allocation with rival Hillary Clinton.

Eric Davis: It makes sense to go slow on pot bill

Posted on April 14, 2016 |
By Eric Davis

The Vermont House Judiciary Committee has amended the Senate-passed bill legalizing the sale of small amounts of marijuana for recreational use with a new proposal taking a very different approach.

Instead of legalization, the House Judiciary proposal would expand marijuana education programs, set a standard for psychoactive substances in the blood for drivers, and establish a commission to do more research on marijuana policy issues.
