Letter to the Editor: Ida Wells an inspiring heroine for International Women's Day

Posted on March 30, 2017 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

I invite each of you to reflect and express gratitude for a woman who has touched your life. Here is part of the story of a woman (Shall I say “herstory”?), who has changed how I view the power of writing, speaking, and acting on one’s leadings.

This African American woman’s name is Ida B. Wells. She lived from 1862 until 1931. She was born in Holly Springs, Miss. Ida was officially a slave for about the first six months of her life. The Emancipation Proclamation changed her status.

Jessie Raymond: A truly rare experience at a movie

Posted on March 30, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last weekend, I went to the movies.

This may not sound like a big deal, but I haven’t seen a movie in a theater since summer 2011, when I watched “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” in 3-D.

Editorial: Playing chicken, Trump caves

Posted on March 27, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Congressional Republicans called Trump’s bluff Friday and guess who backed down? Trump did, with his tail between his legs. Trump had tried to make it a game of ‘chicken,’ carelessly threatening Republican opponents last Thursday that if they didn’t pass TrumpCare he would “come and get them,” but it was Trump who chickened out before the bill was voted down.

Jan Demers, CVOEO provides services to welcome new Americans

Posted on March 27, 2017 |
By Jan Demers

When my family gathers for dinner we think carefully about the menu. My daughter and daughter-in-law are lactose intolerant. Two of us have diabetes. One daughter-in-law doesn’t eat beef or pork. Another can’t be in the same room with anything having to do with fish without risking a severe allergic reaction. Thoughtful planning ensures that we have wonderful meals and even more fulfilling conversations.

Letter to the Editor: 'Thoughtful' letter part of good dialogue

Posted on March 27, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

I appreciated the letter to the editor from LuAnn Chiola, in which she offered a thoughtful case for the student protesters who prevented author Charles Murray from speaking at a Middlebury College podium. Obviously reasonable people differ on this issue.

However, Ms. Chiola does not accurately reflect what I wrote when she criticizes my defense of Murray’s right to articulate his sometimes abhorrent views. I did not write of the protesters that “their cause is not rooted in morals or ethics.”

Letter to the Editor: College diversity offers education

Posted on March 27, 2017 |
By John Emerson

Middlebury College alumnus Steven Nothern ’78 shared his perspectives on events surrounding the campus visit of Charles Murray (Addison Independent, March 20). Although I can easily find points of agreement with Mr. Nothern, I respectfully disagree in two important ways.

Editorial: A $10 million price tag, and Trump+ICE = bad policy

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Two local stories stand out in today’s Addison Independent: a shocking $10 million price tag for upgrading the Ilsley Library in Middlebury, and, more importantly, a look at how the threat of deportation of migrant workers could impact the state’s and county’s dairy economy.

Editorial: Health care primer 101

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As Republicans hope to end ObamaCare and begin the launch of TrumpCare, here’s a basic primer that explains one over-arching problem Republicans face: As crafted, the GOP plan does two things that have Republicans up for re-election in 2018 and 2020 running for cover: it could make roughly 24 million Americans now on Obamacare either lose their insurance or see the premiums increase so much they wouldn’t be able to afford coverage; and premiums for older and sicker Americans will skyrocket.
