Clippings: How to be scared and wet under Weybridge

Posted on November 10, 2011 |
By Christian Woodard

I didn’t know I was afraid of black spiders the size of my thumb. I had forgotten that I was afraid of the dark. I have always worried about heights, but didn’t know that tight places could make my fingers shake.

I also didn’t know I could face all these fears simultaneously less than 15 minutes from home. Weybridge, and much of Vermont, has karst geology, meaning that beneath your feet probably lie yawning fissures, underground streams and eroded passages of slick limestone.

Politically Thinking: Power deal needs careful review

Posted on November 10, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

The Vermont Public Service Board has opened its review of the proposed purchase of Central Vermont Public Service by Gaz Metro, the Canadian utility that is the corporate parent of Green Mountain Power, and the subsequent merger of CVPS into GMP. One of the most important issues the PSB must decide in this preliminary phase of the proceeding is whether to grant the petition filed by Sen. Vincent Illuzzi, R-Essex-Orleans, and 45 other Vermont ratepayers to appoint an independent counsel to represent the public interest before the board.

Editorial: Of bridges and community

Posted on November 7, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Two years after the forced closing and demolition of the Champlain Bridge, thousands of area residents have a vastly deeper appreciation of how bridges connect our lives — physically as well as socially.

Editorial: Real healthcare reform

Posted on November 3, 2011 |
By Emerson K. Lynn

Vermont could save as much as $1.5 billion annually through its health care reform efforts, or as little as a half billion a year, according to a report released yesterday by the Joint Fiscal Office and the Department of Banking, Insurance, Securities and Health Care Administration.

The variation between $1.5 billion and a half-billion in savings makes the estimate almost meaningless. It means they don’t know what the savings will be, because the circumstances can vary so dramatically.

Clippings: Fed action would leave citizens in the dark

Posted on November 3, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

After months of grueling debate matched by great compromise, the writing of the U.S. Constitution came to a close in September 1787. As a framework for just governance, it was based as much on established principle as it was on experimentation, relying heavily on the virtue and will of the American people. The proposed system bestowed enough power in the people for them to stake a claim to their future, if they chose to.

Between the Lines: Tree house, once upon a time

Posted on November 3, 2011 |
By Greg Dennis

A few months ago, I was asked by an editor at the college’s “Middlebury Magazine” to write about a tree house that had been constructed during our college years. That piece appears in the current issue of the magazine. Because it’s a story I’ve also wanted to tell in this space, I’ve adapted the magazine account for today’s column.

Around the bend: Renovations 'virtually' finished

Posted on November 3, 2011 |

You should see our new house. Or rather, you should see my imaginary remodeled version of our current house. I drew it up on a simple computer-aided design program we have that lets you draw floor plans and turn them into realistic 3-D renderings.

Editorial: Giving credit where it's due

Posted on October 31, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Despite the left’s criticism of President Barack Obama on several fronts, credit should be given where it’s due. Specifically, his call to impose an income tax on the super rich, popularly called the millionaire’s tax; his decision to pull troops out of Iraq by the end of the year; and the way he handled the crisis in Libya.

Editorial: Which is the greater gamble?

Posted on October 27, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If I had been writing the story covering Middlebury’s selectboard meeting on Tuesday night, I would have written a different beginning than the one we used on today’s front page.

It would have read like this:

“Creating ‘good jobs close to home,’ was the message a group of 25 area community leaders took to the Middlelbury selectboard in an hour-long presentation Tuesday evening, along with their unanimous endorsement to hire an economic development director to create jobs in Middlebury.

Politically Thinking: McDonald a viable state candidate

Posted on October 27, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Pat McDonald, the chair of the Vermont Republican Party, could well be the Republican candidate for governor in 2012. While she has not yet declared her candidacy, many Republicans are urging McDonald to enter the race. The other Republicans who have been mentioned as gubernatorial candidates have either not shown interest in a 2012 campaign (Brian Dubie and Randy Brock), or have decided to seek re-election to their current position (Tom Salmon).
