Editorial: It's 11 days 'til Christmas, so relax, smile and enjoy

Posted on December 14, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

As these 11 days before Christmas loom before us — family is getting together, there are meals to prepare and presents yet to buy — remember to relax and enjoy the rich traditions of this holiday season that make it so worthwhile.

The holiday focus in Middlebury — as in Brandon, Bristol and Vergennes — is about community festivals, contributing to several wonderful community causes through special events, listening to chorus groups ring in the season, and for many it is a season for worship and reflection.

Editorial: Sanders omits half the story on Bernanke's nomination

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s Sen. Bernie Sanders efforts to block Ben Bernanke’s nomination for a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve make a point, but in doing so he omits more than half of the story.

Sanders suggests that Bernanke should not be confirmed for a second term based on the premise that “the American people voted last year for a change in our national priorities to put the interests of ordinary people head of the greed of Wall Street and the wealthy few. What the American people did not bargain for was another four years for one of the key architects of the Bush economy.”

Editorial: Greg's — a heartening transition

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

That Greg’s Meat Market will still be Greg’s even without Greg Wry walking the grocery aisles is testament to the strength of a good business and of the loyal following he created.

Clippings: Actor learned from a great mentor

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By John S. McCright

My childhood friend Toby Huss is an actor. He lives in Los Angeles and actually makes a living playing characters on TV and in the movies. Google him, you’ll be surprised how far a boy from a small town in Iowa can go when he heads to the bright lights of New York City, and the brighter lights of Tinseltown, with dreams, drive and a natural affinity for outrageous behavior.

Politically Thinking: Factors pressing on school taxes

A “perfect storm” of forces is making Vermont school boards’ task of preparing budgets for the 2010-11 school year more difficult than at any time in recent memory. The contributors to this storm are declines in the education grand list, the strain on the state’s General Fund, and the fall in the number of students age 5 to 18.

Politics of $1 million in aid

Posted on December 7, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

Last week, area and state legislators sent a letter to Gov. James Douglas recommending that the state set aside up to $1 million of the $8.67 million federal economic stimulus money to help Addison County businesses affected by the closing of the Champlain Bridge. The initiative was spearheaded by Senate President Pro Tempore Peter Shumlin, D-Putney, and House Speaker Hap Smith, D-Morristown, and though it had the support of most Addison County legislators, the proposal was laden with political overtones.

Editorial: Good speech; no good options

Posted on December 3, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

In listening to President Barack Obama outline his strategy for sending 30,000 more troops into Afghanistan on Tuesday night’s televised address, we found ourselves wanting to believe his rationale and his assessment, but what we recognized was that it was little more than a well-delivered political speech carefully calculated to cause the president the least amount of political damage.

That was a disappointment.

Clippings: Media give thanks for news bounty

Posted on December 3, 2009 |
By John Flowers

Too often I have taken Thanksgiving for granted as simply a day off from work to gorge myself on turkey, pie and just about anything else that doesn’t move. Pilgrims? Have never really given them, their funny costumes and blunderbusses much thought.

But this year, I thought I’d take some time to put the “Thanks” in Thanksgiving — specifically from a journalist’s perspective. In no particular order, I thought I’d extend my heartfelt newsroom appreciation to:

Around the bend: Stealth knitter eyes holiday deadline

Posted on December 3, 2009 |
By Jessie Raymond

With the holidays approaching, our house is already filling up with the love and laughter of family and friends. Surrounded by my favorite people day and night, I keep coming back to one question: How do I make them go away?

Oh, I’m all for family togetherness; it’s just that the constant presence of nearly everyone on my Christmas list has made it impossible for me to work on their gifts in secret.

That’s right, I’m a stealth knitter.

Missing the mark in Vermont

Posted on November 30, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the hubbub over the recent crackdown on employers hiring illegal migrant workers, the one statement that seems to define the situation in Vermont is that the hiring of migrant workers is not about cheap labor, it’s about hiring dependable labor in a market where no others are willing to do the work.

If Congress, the administration and the federal bureaucracy could tailor federal laws around that single premise, perhaps a workable immigration law (or amendment) that applies to dairy farms could be written and passed.
