Clippings: From the outhouse to the penthouse

Posted on July 14, 2011 |
By John Flowers

Only 10 years ago, I was a self-described whiner when it came to my rooting interests on the professional sports scene. Having spent most of my life in New England, I rooted for the New England-area sports teams. That meant the Massachusetts-based Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriots.

Entering this millennium, rooting for those aforementioned teams (with the possible exception of the Celtics) meant wearing a big loser “L” on my forehead at any gathering of sports enthusiasts.

Around the bend: Tomato crop boost leads to overkill

Posted on July 14, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Proof I’m not a good gardener: I’m afraid of my tomatoes.

It’s not the kind of hair-trigger fear that enables me to leap backwards over a 6-foot tall row of beans when I see a spider. It’s more of a low-grade foreboding of things to come later in the summer. I have too many tomato plants and I’m scared.

Guest Editorial: Quebec is a key partner in Vermont's energy future

Posted on July 7, 2011 |
By Gov. James Douglas

As Governor of Vermont, one of my first priorities was to strengthen and grow our state's centuries-long partnership with the Canadian Province of Quebec. I believed then as I do now that this relationship is critical to the success of our great state. Quebec is our largest trading partner and a significant source of clean, stable and, most importantly, renewable energy from Hydro-Quebec. Not only do we share an international border, but we share a deep cultural and historic connection; indeed many families have relatives on both sides.

Clippings: Kitten's good fortune speaks volumes

Posted on July 7, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

When Josefina was two weeks old, she was abandoned in a dumpster.

Whether she was the product of a premature feline mother that couldn’t handle the stress of kittens or she was the victim of callous owners, we will never know.

Between the Lines: The view from the porch

Posted on July 7, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

It is a neighborhood of porches. Deep, wide porches framed by white columns and balustrades that are the perfect spot for a sandaled foot to rest.

And resting – taking a load off, settling in for a chat with a housemate or savoring a solitary scotch as the slow summer evening fades toward its demise – that’s what these porches are made for.

For cooling off when it’s too hot to do anything else. For conversation when it’s lonely inside.

Editorial: Methadone clinic poses challenge

Posted on July 4, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Bringing the possibility of siting a methadone clinic in Middlebury to the selectboard’s attention at a meeting last week was the right action taken by the Counseling Service of Addison County. Whether a clinic is eventually sited in Middlebury or not, as CSAC Director Robert Thorn said, the community still needs to address what is an apparent problem throughout the county and state.

Editorial: Gaz-Metro's play for CVPS

Posted on June 30, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Vermont ratepayers are sitting in the bleachers in terms of the pending negotiations that will determine who will own Central Vermont Public Service, even though they have the most to win or lose in the transaction. But even fans in the bleachers have a voice that can be heard as long as Vermont businesses and residents pay attention to what’s going on at the plate.

Around the bend: Haste can lay waste to risk-takers

Posted on June 30, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

“Why, instead of doing things the right way, do we do them in a way we know will end badly?”

When my friend Jenn called me the other day with this question, it wasn’t merely academic.

Jenn recently became a beekeeper. Over the course of just a few weeks she already had come to think of her thousands of honeybees as little buzzing friends. Watching their goings (sans pollen) and comings (fully pollen-loaded) was giving her hours of pleasure.
