Editorial: A political question to ponder

Posted on December 8, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Here’s a political question to ponder. In a representative democracy, should a public board follow ‘majority rule’ or what might be called ‘plurality rule’?

More specifically, if town residents vote 60 percent to 40 percent against locating a gravel pit near town, should the governing body write rules that sort of prohibit the pit but allow some gravel extraction in a smaller corner of the proposed pit — taking the stated stance that “not everyone gets what they want,” so the board splits the difference?

Guest Editorial: Progress for dairy policies?

Posted on December 5, 2011 |
By St. Albans Messenger

When the “supercommittee” on debt reduction collapsed one of the proposals that collapsed with it was a potential change in the nation’s dairy policy by year’s end. Federal price supports for agriculture, as with everything else, are the obvious targets of budget cutters, then, and now.

Editorial: Floating lead balloons

Posted on December 1, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Here's a provocative idea that makes total common sense, and yet it’ll float about as well as a bunch of lead balloons.

Tim Bouton, emergency response planner for the Addison County Regional Planning Commission, was talking in general about what has been learned in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene (and before), including the general premise that roads, and some villages, should not be located in flood plains.

Clippings: Losing battle for the perfect photo

Posted on December 1, 2011 |
By Trent Campbell

As a photojournalist I don’t really fit the mold. Compared to other shooters out there I am pretty laid back and quiet. I try not to get in anybody’s way (sorry if I have ever been in your way) and, please don’t tell my boss, I am not always willing to do anything to get “the shot.”

Around the Bend: Early deal ruins Black Friday fun

Posted on December 1, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

For years, I’ve spoken out against shopping on Black Friday. But this year, for the first time, I almost joined the wild, deal-grabbing crowds.

I’m not opposed to Black Friday in theory. On the contrary; I can think of no better way to kick off a joyful Christmas season than by abandoning all goodwill toward others in the shameless and maniacal pursuit of cheap material goods. I just prefer to celebrate the day after Thanksgiving the way our Founding Fathers intended it, by lying around all day eating leftovers and napping.

Editorial: OWS needs a sharper focus

The slogan, “we are the 99.9 percent,” is certainly catchy, but how does it help define the Occupy Wall Street movement? Or better yet, what does define the movement?

Editorial: What the supercommittee's failure says about Congress

Posted on November 23, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The inability of the congressional “supercommittee” to reach agreement on how to reduce the nation’s deficit by $1.2 trillion over a decade corresponds directly with a recent New York Times/NBCpoll showing a record 84 percent of Americans disapprove of how Congress is doing its job, and that its approval rating has hit rock bottom at just 9 percent. That’s an all-time low; less support than even President Richard M. Nixon had during Watergate.

Clippings: Learning the ABCs of newspapers

Posted on November 23, 2011 |
By John S. McCright

A teacher from an area grade school called the other day and asked if she could bring her kids around to find out how a newspaper is made. I told her I’d be happy to share what I knew, and we talked about a day and time for the visit.

After I got off the phone I realized I didn’t know the ages of the kids who would be visiting. I knew they weren’t high schoolers. She might have said something about second grade. Good heavens, what would I have to say to children so young?

Oh so bad

Honey come and kiss me
