Guest Editorial: The coming wave

Posted on July 12, 2012 |

If you had two products of comparable quality and one cost $120,000 and the other $20,000, the choice between the two would be simple. If the $20,000 option were considerably better, then not only would the choice be easy, but the $120,000 option would cease to exist.

To a degree, that describes the horns of the dilemma to be encountered by higher education. No matter how they respond, the cost of a college education and the explosion in digital learning models will revamp the way the next generation approaches education.

Guest Editorial: Negative advertising takes center stage

Posted on July 9, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

Democratic consultant Jason Stanford argues in a Huffington Post article that negative advertising is a good thing, if you like democracy. He argues that voters pay more attention to criticism than praise and that raising the voters’ hackles also gets them to the polls.

We would like to believe otherwise, but the research shows he’s correct. To drive the point home, he points to the recent Wisconsin election, which was highly negative, and yet drove more people to the polls than in the general election.

Guest editorial: Court's decision sound, potus onus on voting public, for the fourth

Posted on July 5, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

For months, the chattering class occupied itself with the self-appointed task of telling people how the court would rule on “Obamacare” and why. And they were wrong. Almost without exception. No one predicted that Chief Justice John Roberts — nominated by former President George Bush — would side with the court’s four liberal justices to give President Barack Obama his most sought-after victory.

Probably my favorite moment of our family’s enjoyable Saturday night trip to see the Vermont Lake Monsters came when my older daughter gained new perspective on the quality of her internship here at this newspaper.

Not all work at the Independent is as glamorous as it appears when readers see us at school board meetings, zoning hearings and ribbon-cuttings.

Politically thinking: Court ruling will affect future laws

Posted on July 5, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

President Obama and supporters of a greater government role in providing and financing health care were overjoyed at last week’s Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act. A closer reading of Chief Justice Roberts’ opinion should dampen that enthusiasm. The ACA still faces political challenges, and the Court has erected barriers to future expansions of federal social policy.

Sixty years of serious mistakes

Posted on July 5, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s been said that on the radio, a hockey game — with its endless series of missed shots, errant passes and unintended consequences — sounds like the broadcast of one long mistake.

As I sit on the verge of turning 60, sometimes I’m tempted to conclude that the story of my life would, like the broadcast of a hockey game, sound like one long mistake. Or at least one long unintended consequence.

That got me wondering what a look-back broadcast of those 60 years would be like — perhaps a dialogue between me and the Cosmic Inquisitor.

Around the Bend: Not every camper is a happy one

Posted on June 28, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

We dropped our 12-year-old off at summer camp last Sunday.

She was only too glad to get away from us, especially after her father started singing made-up camp songs in line during registration (mortifying her is one of his many talents; singing is not).

She’s at an age where we are no longer her favorite people to spend time with — or even be seen with, really. But to her, camp is more than an escape: She thinks it’s fun. I went to camp once, and let me tell you, she’s wrong.

Guest Editorial: Recent history should dissuade entry into Syria

Posted on June 25, 2012 |
By Haviland Smith

It is a simple fact that many “countries” in the Middle East are not really nation-states as they are understood to be in the West, but rather often unhappy agglomerations of ethnic, tribal, sectarian and even national groups having little in common.

Instability in the Middle East can be measured by the extent of tribal, sectarian, ethnic and national frictions in any “country” in the region.
