Editorial: Sitting up to take notice

In the Internet age, you come across the occasional mass-email that, at the very least, offers some amusing reading; if not real insight. In a tip of our hats to those waning days of summer where we imagine ourselves horizontal in our hammocks reading stuff of relative irrelevance (those were the days!), here are some interesting comparisons of how life was in this country in 1911 — 100 years ago:

•  The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

• Fuel for the Model T car was sold in drug stores only.

Clippings: Of course it's raining, it's Field Days

Posted on August 11, 2011 |
By Andrea Warren

With a fresh chocolate creemee in hand, friends by my side and not a worry in the world, the ground slipped out from under me. The immense amount of rain had created a mudslide, which I didn’t intend to travel down.

The crowd turned to me for a laugh as I carefully stood up, with my right side covered in Addison County mud.

I giggled and quickly moved on. I had always loved playing in the mud but never thought to use it for a fashion statement at the fair.

Editorial: When good ideas are done well

That the inaugural Midd Summer Festival drew an overflow crowd of more than 1,500 people to sample cheese, beer, wine and other Vermont-based beverages had organizers and volunteers with the host Better Middlebury Partnership bubbling with excitement. That the unexpectedly large crowds caused longer than expected lines is, all things considered, the best of problems to have and will readily be corrected next year, organizers say.

What’s remarkable is that a good idea done well can have such a positive economic impact on the community.

Around the Bend: Summer fair glory proves elusive

Posted on August 11, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Once again Addison County Fair and Field Days is here and once again I did not win the Leona Thompson Bowl.

The Leona Thompson Bowl is, as everyone knows, the holy grail of Field Days awards, bestowed each year to an individual who proves herself to be an all-around ringer in pretty much every craft and foods category at the fair.

Between the Lines: Area swimming holes offer gallons of fun

It’s summertime, and all I want to do is go swimming.

Say what you will about this year’s tough weather — a long winter followed by six weeks of bring-out-the-ark rain followed by drought — but it’s been a great summer for soaking one’s head.

It doesn’t get much better for lake lovers than Button Bay, Kingsland Bay and the Branbury Beach on Lake Dunmore. And for those who like to earn their swim, there’s always the hike up to Silver Lake.

Editorial: Two questions for 2012

Are Republicans in Congress tone deaf? And are Democrats so spineless they can’t vote for what they know is right?

Consider findings in a New York Times/CBS News Poll taken last week.

• 82 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job, the most since The Times started asking the question in 1977.

Clippings: After hitting No. 47, it's all downhill

Oh, I had a great birthday, thank you for asking. I got to enjoy almost everything I like, and I don’t just mean chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

My 47th birthday was a couple Sundays ago. I didn’t have particularly high expectations for a grand day; after a certain age one never does. Sure, I’d get to spend quality time with my family, in particular my sister-in-law during her once-a-year visit from far away. She and her kids were renting a place on Lake Dunmore, which would be a nice place to pass a hot day.

Politically Thinking: State might benefit from A.G. race

Posted on August 4, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Attorney General William Sorrell has not faced a competitive election in his 14 years in office. In 1997, former Gov. Howard Dean nominated Attorney General Jeffrey Amestoy to become Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. At the same time, Dean appointed Sorrell, his administration secretary, to succeed Amestoy. In each of the seven elections from 1998 through 2010, Sorrell was re-elected without a serious contest.
