Editorial: What the supercommittee's failure says about Congress

Posted on November 23, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The inability of the congressional “supercommittee” to reach agreement on how to reduce the nation’s deficit by $1.2 trillion over a decade corresponds directly with a recent New York Times/NBCpoll showing a record 84 percent of Americans disapprove of how Congress is doing its job, and that its approval rating has hit rock bottom at just 9 percent. That’s an all-time low; less support than even President Richard M. Nixon had during Watergate.

Clippings: Learning the ABCs of newspapers

Posted on November 23, 2011 |
By John S. McCright

A teacher from an area grade school called the other day and asked if she could bring her kids around to find out how a newspaper is made. I told her I’d be happy to share what I knew, and we talked about a day and time for the visit.

After I got off the phone I realized I didn’t know the ages of the kids who would be visiting. I knew they weren’t high schoolers. She might have said something about second grade. Good heavens, what would I have to say to children so young?

Oh so bad

Honey come and kiss me

They’re the worst I’ve ever had

Review: 'Funny Girl' knocks it out of the park

Posted on November 21, 2011 |
By Angelo Lynn

MIDDLEBURY — Sensational. Powerful. Delightful. Heart-wrenching. Laugh out loud funny.

The Middlebury Community Players’ production of Funny Girl has one-upped Hollywood, out-staged Broadway and, much like the character she plays as Fanny Brice, unleashed a new star to the Middlebury stage — Kim Anderson.

The show, which opened last Thursday at the Town Hall Theater and continues this weekend, tells the story of comedienne Fanny Brice and her rise from the slums of New York to stardom in the Ziegfeld Follies.

Editorial: Meeting goes awry in Bristol

Posted on November 17, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Chico Martin, vice-chairman of the Bristol Planning Commission, was not only disrespectful to a citizen of Bristol, but very likely was in violation of the state’s open meetings law when he prevented long-time Bristol resident John ‘Slim’ Pickens from seeking a clarification on a pertinent topic facing the commission.

Clippings: Mystery leads to veteran's story

Posted on November 17, 2011 |
By John Flowers

For years they sat in an old cedar chest, an odd coupling among a morass of ramshackle household furnishings and chachkas harvested from my late grandfather’s home when he died around seven years ago.

The first item was a leather-covered, wood-framed box, around 14 inches by 15 inches. The opening flap bears a large, white number “13,” with a few buckles and strap remnants at both ends.

Editorial: Democracy teeters in nation's big cities as press is silenced

Posted on November 17, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

hat’s going on in our nation’s big cities? Police are swooping in with full-on military tactics, including air support from helicopters in one city, riot gear, pepper spray, tear gas and automatic weapons to do what? Bust up non-violent groups of American citizens protesting the corporate greed that has decimated the nation’s middle class and enriched the rich? That hardly justifies a military-style assault.

Around the Bend: Gabby girl gets her party game on

Posted on November 17, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

I suffer from a mild but chronic condition known casually as Foot in Mouth Disease. There is no cure.

The condition is most common among people like me who (a) talk a lot and (b) are incapable of thinking before speaking. I’m the one who will greet sickly coworkers by saying, “Wow, you look terrible.” My genuine concern goes unappreciated.

Editorial: Obama fails to lead by delaying decision on pipeline

Posted on November 14, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

President Obama’s decision last Thursday to postpone action on the disputed Keystone XL oil pipeline that would carry oil from the tar sands of Alberta to Gulf ports in Texas is a smart political calculation only if he wins re-election. Otherwise, he fails as president to protect the environment, wean Americans off their over-dependence on oil-based energy, and sets in motion an energy policy (assuming any Republican president would approve the project) that favors the consumption of carbon-based energy rather than move toward an economy based on renewable energy.

Clippings: How to be scared and wet under Weybridge

Posted on November 10, 2011 |
By Christian Woodard

I didn’t know I was afraid of black spiders the size of my thumb. I had forgotten that I was afraid of the dark. I have always worried about heights, but didn’t know that tight places could make my fingers shake.

I also didn’t know I could face all these fears simultaneously less than 15 minutes from home. Weybridge, and much of Vermont, has karst geology, meaning that beneath your feet probably lie yawning fissures, underground streams and eroded passages of slick limestone.
