Notes of appreciation: Local veterinarians serve county's homeless animals

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Jessica Danyow

As the end of September nears and we get used to the routines and rhythms of fall, I am reminded of the consistency and continuity with which Addison County’s veterinarians have served the homeless animals at Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society.

Victor Nuovo: Power to 'The People' is freedom's foundation

Posted on September 28, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

I return to the question: Who are the People? Surely, it is more than a useful fiction or abstraction.

“We the People” refers to actual people: those who directly or indirectly authorized the adoption and ratification of the Constitution. But in the beginning these were not all the people dwelling in the land. Women were excluded, also slaves, and native Americans who were the original occupiers of the land. Only freeborn males were counted: white, English, and mostly Protestant.

Letters to the Editor: Middlebury officials need to listen to citizens

Posted on September 25, 2017 |
By Winslow and Joanna Colwell

For the past several years members of the Middlebury Select Board have authorized the VT League of Cities and Towns to lobby on their behalf against any effort to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Vermont. Until recently most of us were not aware of this. We find it upsetting that they would have taken a position on this issue without first assessing whether it reflects the town's wishes.

Letters to the Editor: Porter priorities are providing care, remaining viable

Posted on September 25, 2017 |
By Maureen McLaughlin

A recent letter published in the Addison Independent suggested that Porter Medical Center needs to re-focus its priorities.

I’d like to be clear about what our priorities have been and continue to be.

•  Increasing access to high-quality care: by joining the UVM Health Network patient care options for our community are enhanced.

Sen. Bernie Sanders: Why we need Medicare for all

Posted on September 25, 2017 |
By Sen. Bernie Sanders

This is a pivotal moment in American history. Do we, as a nation, join the rest of the industrialized world and guarantee comprehensive health care to every person as a human right? Or do we maintain a system that is enormously expensive, wasteful and bureaucratic, and is designed to maximize profits for big insurance companies, the pharmaceutical industry, Wall Street and medical equipment suppliers?

Editorial: Trump tests huckster's myth that no publicity is bad

Posted on September 25, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The man in the nation’s White House is obviously a believer in the famous huckster’s saying: “There’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

While marketing professionals through the ages have debated that wisdom, Trump is putting it to the test.

Editorial: Trumpcare II — An inevitable race to the bottom for nation's healthcare

Posted on September 21, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Anyone who has read anything about the Republicans latest plan to repeal Obamacare understands that at its core the plan cuts government spending on health care between 2020 and 2026, when the funding allotted in the current proposal would cease — and, we suppose, a new bill would need to be passed to supplement spending by the states, or a whole new system (Bernie’s Medicare-for-all should be popular by then) will be put into place.

Letters to the Editor: No secrecy over marijuana stance

Posted on September 21, 2017 |
By Brian Carpenter et. al

The Thursday, Sept. 15, edition of the Addison Independent published a letter to the editor from Middlebury resident Dave Silberman regarding Selectboard consideration of the VLCT’s position on marijuana legalization in the upcoming 2018 legislative session. We wish to address an important point we take issue with as written.

Letters to the Editor: Public safety is a red herring in marijuana debate

Posted on September 21, 2017 |
By Alison Nihart

At its September 26 meeting, the Middlebury Selectboard will vote on whether to endorse a Vermont League of Cities and Towns (VLCT) lobbying position related to marijuana legalization. Based on what I saw in the video of the September 12 Selectboard meeting, it does not appear that the Selectboard members have reviewed the legislation currently under consideration in the Vermont Statehouse. I hope that before they take that vote, they consider whether these bills address the town’s needs and concerns.

Letters to the Editor: Proposed Ilsley Library project should be scaled back

Posted on September 21, 2017 |
By Sheila Khalladeh

Let me add my support to Janine McDonald’s letter about the proposed renovation of the Ilsley Library.

I accept that there is need for updating and remodeling parts of this old building, but the planned budget of almost $10 million seems to include some unnecessarily “great things” and it would surely be better to scale back both the changes and the cost? I agree with Ms. McDonald that bigger is not necessarily better. Of course, I admit I’m biased — I appreciate books, not technology.
