Eric L. Davis: Work remains after budget adoption

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Eric Davis

Last week, the Vermont House passed the state budget for fiscal year 2018 by a near-unanimous vote. The Senate is likely to follow suit later this month. The Legislature appears on track for adjournment before May 15.

The House leadership — Democratic Speaker Mitzi Johnson and Republican Minority Leader Don Turner — both said they appreciated the bipartisan spirit in which the House approved the budget. The contrast between Montpelier and Washington in this regard could not be more profound.

Gregory Dennis: Finding the 'possible' in fossil fuel divestment

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Greg Dennis

The old saying goes that politics is the art of the possible.

Nowhere has that been more apparent in Vermont politics than in the battle over fossil fuel divestment.

The global effort to divest major institutions out of fossil fuels — to sell off any assets they held in coal, gas and oil companies — began on college campuses six years ago.

Letter to the Editor: Reading effort, article praised

Posted on April 6, 2017 |

What a fine article about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and Addison County Readers (Addison Independent, March 30). The Friends of Ilsley Public Library donated $22,000 to the program over the past 10 years.

This is just one of the ways the members of the Friends contribute to making this great library and this terrific community even greater. (That’s a lot of used books at $1 each and a lot of memberships that start at $5 each.) Yay, readers!

Letter to the Editor: Hosting visitors in Florida wrong

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Lindsay Hart

As an immigrant and naturalized citizen of this country, I was thrilled and delighted to visit Washington, D.C., and tour the seat of our government. As a family we “did” Washington: the Capitol Building, the Library of Congress, the museums, the Mall — we did it all. Most inspiring to me was the White House, that home of the sitting president. It is not a palace or castle built by a monarch or despot, but our White House was built by the people, for their chosen leader, and is the “People’s House.”

Letter to the Editor: Legal pot not the proper solution

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Steve Reynolds

The issue of “marijuana legalization” as presented is not truly about legalization. Truthfully, the solutions proposed are about new regulations for the financial gain of the state. True legalization would be complete deregulation, which is not the proposed agenda. Lawmakers are in a conflict of interest, which clouds their understanding. Some clarity is in order. I oppose legalizing marijuana in Vermont for the following reasons.

Letter to the Editor: Farm-to-School program worth modest investment

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Patti Smith

I am a home childcare provider and educator in Bristol, and I support expanding Farm-to-School in Vermont to include childcare, and increasing state funding to $500,000 to help more children experience Farm-to-School.

In the past year, I was fortunate to participate in a series of workshops hosted by Shelburne Farms that introduced me to the Farm-to-School program. It was a unique, important, and wholesome experience, and I believe that Farm-to-School should be gifted to every Vermont child.

Ways of Seeing: Johanna Nichols, Bucket or not, goals remain vital

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Johanna Nichols

The idea of a bucket list comes from the idiom “kick the bucket.” It assumes that there are experiences or achievements that one hopes to have or accomplish during one’s lifetime. I resist the idea that I should have a bucket list.

According to World Life Expectancy, a white woman in Vermont lives to the average age of 82.61. So, if I live out my natural lifetime, I might be around for another twelve to twenty years. Possibly long enough to see my grandchild grow into a young woman — to see who she becomes.

Victor Nuovo: Plato's Republic in a nutshell

Posted on April 6, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Plato wrote the Republic to give expression to an ideal of a city in which a perfect justice has been established in all of its parts. He was not naive. He did not suppose that his ideal city could be easily realized, if at all; in the end he concluded that it could not. Yet his pessimism never led him to conclude that the ideal was false, only that it was less accessible to thought.

Thus, the idea of justice, which is the central theme of the Republic, became transcendent.
