Editorial: Gov. Scott's line in the sand

Posted on May 14, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Gov. Phil Scott’s line-in-the-sand mantra not to raise a single tax or a single fee has made politics in Vermont’s capital more strident, divisive and unruly. The irony is that the governor himself is mild-mannered, affable, pragmatic and someone who seems to get along with almost everyone.

But in this session he has become an ideologue who cleaves so closely to this one over-riding concern, that he has become unreasonable and close-minded.

Jessie Raymond: Spring yard cleanup defies manual

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

I recently came across an online article titled “Top Ten Tasks for Spring Yard and Garden Cleanup.”

That was four or five more tasks than I personally cared to undertake, but I thought maybe I could pick up a few pointers.

“Be careful when you begin cleaning your yard this spring,” it began. “March is notoriously unpredictable.”

March? I snorted. Clearly this wasn’t a Vermont-based website.

Ways of Seeing: Women's rights are human rights

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

It is almost two years since I agreed, with some trepidation, to join the WomenSafe board of directors. I was nervous about joining a board because I had never served on one before, and I wasn’t sure if I had the right skills to be useful. I pretty much suck at technology beyond answering my email, and my financial literacy might be even worse. To be honest, I was surprised they even asked me! But I have found my time helping to steer this organization, which has worked since 1980 to help countless survivors in our community, to be precious beyond measure.

Letter to the editor: CCV should pay its workers more

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Alice Leeds

When I retired from a long and satisfying career as a public school teacher, I was excited to return to teaching part-time at the Community College of Vermont in Winooski. Student diversity, wonderful colleagues and a lovely work environment make CCV a positive place to teach, and the paycheck supplements my retirement income.

However, instructors who have made a long-term commitment to this important educational institution and who depend on that CCV paycheck for their livelihood are struggling.

Letter to the editor: Memorial Day not for politicians

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Barbara Mercier

Decoration Day, the name was changed to Memorial Day in 1882. It was originally a day where families, veterans, communities decorated the graves of all military members who perished in their respective wars.

Letter to the editor: Leopold's ethic of nature revisited

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By David Brynn

I love Aldo Leopold. His writings have long touched my soul. Yesterday I spent the day with other Leopold groupies contemplating his classic “The Land Ethic” at the Green Mountain Club’s headquarters in Waterbury — a building built with pine, hemlock and mixed hardwoods supplied by Vermont Family Forests. That is a story for another day.

Victor Nuovo: Wollstonecraft and the Rights of Women

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

I begin this essay with a brief biography of Mary Wollstonecraft for the benefit of readers who don’t know her. She was born on April 27, 1759, in London, where she also died, on September 10, 1797, aged 38. She was the second of seven children. Her family was financially comfortable. However, her father was a spendthrift, a drunk, and a wife-beater; his bad habits meant that she received no formal education and no inheritance.

Greg Dennis: Notes on downtown parking and upcountry music

Posted on May 9, 2018 |
By Gregory Dennis

Random thoughts and miscellany this week:

Why do Middlebury officials persist in blocking off several much needed parking places outside the post office? The blocked spaces are reserved for buses that stop there only occasionally. This during a time when downtown businesses are closing due in part to — you guessed it — a lack of parking.
