Letter to the editor: The President explained through musical comedy

Posted on September 13, 2018 |
By Richard Isenberg

With all the 24/7 Trump news coverage and endless “talking head” analysis, I am surprised that I have not heard any comparisons between our current political reality show and the more benign American musical theater. Love him or loath him, there is no question that President Trump is at heart a song and dance man.

Letter to the editor: Hardy understands 'real needs,' would get things done

Posted on September 13, 2018 |
By Millard Cox

I met Ruth Hardy one Saturday morning this summer at the town recycling shed in Ripton. She had driven up Route 125 that morning, knowing that the residents of Ripton would be bringing in their recycling and visiting with neighbors, and she knew it was a good time to become acquainted with the citizenry of our little mountain town. This does not happen in Ripton — that a candidate for state office arrives on recycling day to meet the locals.

The anonymous commentary published in the New York Times last week has since dominated political gossip in the nation’s capital and across the political landscape with the added tension of an unknown that one day will surely be known — and probably sooner than later.

Letter to the editor: Mount Abe air quality issue needs quick attention

Posted on September 10, 2018 |
By David Brynn

A person working at Mount Abraham Union High School recently told me, “Having started back to work at Mt. Abraham after two months away, the first thing I noticed was my headaches were back. I know for a fact it’s the air quality. The area I work in reached 85 degrees last week....”

Breath is life. No breath, no life. Healthy air is the foundation of healthy life. Based on these rather basic concepts, we have chosen to focus now on indoor air quality — or lack thereof — at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Letter to the editor: Lawsuit seeks to protect Bristol residents' rights

Posted on September 10, 2018 |
By Sally Burrell

I am one of the 37 plaintiffs who filed a complaint against the Bristol selectboard and Vermont Gas Systems, asking for our right to vote. It is not yet clear what a vote would conclude. However, one thing is certain: misleading industry advertising has skewed public opinion to believe natural gas is cheaper and cleaner.

Editorial: Seize the moment

Posted on September 6, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Let’s shift focus on the rail bridges project in Middlebury to view it, primarily, from two positive perspectives: how can the town best benefit from the ongoing and upcoming work, and how can we best avoid problems that the work might present?

We say “shift focus” because for the past six months the work has been well underway and there is no fruitful outcome in criticizing the scope of a project that is already set in stone.

So, what’s to be gained going forward?

Police and court reports can have a jarring effect when they hit the pages of your local newspaper.

• Adult charged with sexually assaulting a child.

• Estranged husband and wife charged with providing false information about each other to investigators in an attempt to get the upper hand in a child custody battle.

• Man charged with sexually accosting two women, each with developmental disabilities.

Eric Davis: Congressional mystery could loom

Posted on September 6, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

Democrats must gain 23 U.S. House seats in November in order to have a majority in January. Most independent analysts believe there is about a 60 percent probability that control of the House will flip. A Democratic House would conduct vigorous oversight and investigation of Trump Administration officials and policies. It might also consider articles of impeachment against President Trump.
