Letters to the Editor: Riverwatch group perseveres

Posted on July 10, 2017 |
By Heidi Willis et al

It is July and the Addison County Riverwatch Collaborative is in the middle of another season of water quality monitoring. Our largely volunteer organization has been collecting water samples on six area rivers and streams (Otter Creek, Middlebury River, New Haven River, Lemon Fair, Little Otter Creek and Lewis Creek) for more than 20 years. Our data is used by municipalities, landowners, the state and a number of organizations concerned with water quality.

Letters to the Editor: Local resident offers views on Ferrisburgh tree cutting

Posted on July 10, 2017 |
By Paulette Bogan

Andy Kirkaldy’s article in the June 26 edition concerning the tree-cutting case in Ferrisburgh presented only the farmer’s comments and point of view. At the Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting mentioned in the article, several residents spoke up to express their extreme distress at the cutting of thousands of trees in Ferrisburgh and Panton.

Jessie Raymond: Stuck in the mud — gardening 2017

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

This year’s heavy rains have made my vegetable garden not only soggy, but downright dangerous.

Now, I’ve always had a healthy fear of the garden, but it’s been mostly regarding spiders — less in terms of venomous bites than in terms of my reaction: having one skitter up my arm, causing me to jump, step on the blade of a hoe and take the handle right between the eyes. It could happen.

But the rain poses its own threats. I know, because I’m a survivor.

Ways of Seeing, Sas Carey: Misleading voices sound convincing

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Sas Carey

National Public Radio recently played a clip from the government about why it is important to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. It reminded me of another voice I heard four decades ago in Sweden.

Letter to the Editor: Injustice based on systemic lie

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Maggie Hall

Last week was the most recent ‘yet again story’ about the police officer who was acquitted for shooting a black man. This time it was Philando Castile who was shot 7 times in his car. He was pulled over for having a tail light out and attempted to reach for his license to show the police officer. My mom commented, “If I had a black son, I would tell my son never to reach for anything if a cop was around.”

Letter to the Editor: Outgoing Meals on Wheels leader thankful

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Tracy Corebett

I write to publicly thank each one of my volunteers and every amazing Meals on Wheels client I have had the honor of getting to know and serve. Each of you have enriched my life beyond measure, I’ve oft described my role as being sandwiched between volunteers, who are with me only because they choose to be, and our Seniors, who I endearingly call libraries with skin. They are more than willing to share their history and experiences. What a blessed place to find oneself in!

This week’s community forum is by Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos.

I take my role in state government seriously. I am honored to have been elected by Vermonters to serve as Secretary of State. Since taking office in 2011, I have worked hard to improve how our government serves the public by increasing transparency, efficiency and productivity.

Letter to the Editor: Cyclist grateful to chamber head

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Pascal Parent

I am a road bicycle enthusiast involved in organizing cycling trips with and for my Canadian fellow friends in the northeastern United States. It is always a challenge to plan safe and enjoyable routes without being there to check them out in advance.

I wanted to let you know that I have been very impressed with the availability and dedication of Sue Hoxie of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce.

Victor Nuovo: Thomas Hobbes, our contemporary

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo,Victor1754.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the 14th essay by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought, focusing on the great political thinkers.

The long life of Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) encompassed England’s greatest crisis and perhaps its darkest hours. That he survived them and even flourished is proof of his ingenuity and adaptability; that he also wrote about them is our very good fortune, for in them we encounter the voice of experience unmoved by self pity or sentimental fantasies, a courageous voice.
