Editorial: Mount Abe vote a mixed message, cautionary tale

Posted on November 13, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On Thursday, Nov. 2, not Tuesday, Nov. 7 as I erroneously wrote in a prior editorial, Mount Abraham voters rejected a $36.6 million bond to extensively renovate the high school by a 93-vote margin, 1,261 to 1,168. The question now, according to school officials and members of the renovation committee, is not “what next” — but when should the next vote be and for how much.

Jessie Raymond: Cupholder, engine, wheels ... check

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

“Do you drive a lot?” he asked.

“About four miles a day,” I said.

“Great! Well, this model has cruise control, so that’ll come in handy.”

I sighed.

I hate car shopping.

That was two weeks ago, and in the end, I drove away from the lot in a new (used) car. I forget which kind.

Letters to the Editor: Locals ignored in move to Vermont Gas

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By John Beattie

As I watch Vermont Gas entering the Marbleworks with its machines, flaggers, and general disruption, I recall the many years that the gas needs of this complex have quietly been served by Fyles Brothers of Orwell, a local provider of LP gas. Fyles Brothers has provided the complex with remarkable service for many years. Its employees are dedicated, professional, and local. It is a successful local business that serves with unparalleled integrity. Those words, sadly, are not evidenced in the behavior of Vermont Gas.

Community Forum, Stephen Terry: Citizens deserve answers on Niger deaths

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By Steve Terry

The deaths of four soldiers in Niger, three of whom were Green Berets, not only opened up a new political wound for President Trump, but it also tore off a scab from an unresolved policy battle between the President and the U. S. Senate over sending U. S. troops abroad.

The Defense Department is attempting to respond to Sen. John McCain, chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on what exactly happened in Niger when on Oct. 4 four soldiers were killed during an ambush. The Defense Department and the F.B.I. are still investigating the matter.

Ways of Seeing, Rebecca Kneale Gould: How I made it through last year

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By Rebecca Kneale Gould

Last autumn I took a year off from writing “Ways of Seeing” columns to focus on some other projects. And what a year it was. While I missed the regular writing (and I missed you, my dear readers) I also often felt relieved about taking a pause, for I was practically struck dumb by the world in which I found myself after November 8, 2016.

Gregory Dennis: The time suck that is Twitter

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

My name is Greg and I’m a Twitterholic.

It didn’t used to be this way. Back before my addiction took hold, I could just look at Twitter for a few minutes and then go on with my life.

Now, though, I can’t escape the giant time suck. The pull of the keyboard, the angry post and the witty riposte.

Some people pour their entire lives down the bottle. I’m in danger of pouring my life down the Twitterverse. And when you’re drinking from the firehouse that is Twitter, the high never lasts.

Guest editorial: Early childhood development, our health and our economy

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By Con Hogan

Vermont is facing some very daunting challenges in the economic development world.

We are beginning to understand the implications of our state’s population not growing. Projections are telling us that the southwest part of Vermont will actually lose population over the next 20 years. Chittenden County will only be growing at about 2 percent over the foreseeable future.

Posted on November 6, 2017 |

It’s a helpless feeling, some say. Like spiraling down a deep, dark hole. You try to stop your fall, but you can’t. And the farther you fall down that hole, the darker it becomes until ultimately darkness surrounds you.
