Eric Davis, Politically Thinking: Battle looms over Mississippi flag

Posted on September 7, 2017 |
By Eric Davis

The Supreme Court might soon consider the issue of Confederate symbols and how they relate to American public values. Carlos Moore, a citizen of Mississippi, has filed a lawsuit challenging the Mississippi state flag because it includes an image of the Confederate battle flag in the upper-left hand corner. Moore’s challenge was rejected by lower courts, primarily on procedural grounds, and he has asked the High Court to take up his case.

Ways of Seeing, Alice Leeds: Home garden teaches life lessons

Posted on September 7, 2017 |
By Alice Leeds

When we moved to Bristol 24 years ago, I had never lived in a small town. The 19th century homes on our block are close set, divided by driveways leading to former horse barns, but the land behind them stretches back spaciously.

I felt overwhelmed by the huge spruce hovering so close to our back porch. It obscured this view. I suggested cutting it down.

“You don’t move into a neighborhood and start cutting down trees,” my husband warned.

Jan Demers, Bridging Gaps, Building Futures: Good deeds to meet pressing needs

Posted on September 7, 2017 |
By Jan Demers

“Get in the van! We are going!” She gave her friend little choice. After avoiding doctors for years, one friend had listened to the other tell of pain and had seen her gait change. The result of the trip in the van was that the doctor found a tumor in her friend’s back and surgery was scheduled. Following surgery there was a complete recovery.

Community Forum, Karen Glitman: Efficiency Vermont — yesterday, today and tomorrow

Posted on September 7, 2017 |
By Karen Glitman

Nearly two decades ago, when growing electricity use was leading to increasing costs and environmental and financial risk, a group of Vermonters had a bold idea to tackle that era’s energy challenge. In contrast to building power plants, these leaders knew that electric efficiency, “energy not used,” could be quickly deployed at a fraction of the cost, and with little risk.

Victor Nuovo: Private property and civil society

Posted on September 7, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s Note: This is the 23rd essay by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought.

By VICTOR NUOVO

Philosopher John Locke believed that the paramount duty of civil government is to safeguard the life, liberty and property of all the people. He believed that a person’s right to these things are rights of nature: they become civil rights whenever a person consents to enter a civil state; there they may be limited, but they are never lost.

Letter to the editor: More nurses needed at Porter Medical Center

Posted on September 1, 2017 |
By Alice Leo

We’re not writing today to talk about the rising salaries of hospital administrators, even though as reported in Vermont Digger, they have increased 12% over the last year.

We’re not writing today to talk about the difficulties many of our patients have in paying for medical care — even though Vermonters voted definitively nearly a decade ago for universal healthcare.

Editorial: Harvey, Sandy and hypocrisy

Posted on August 31, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As Americans across the nation reach out with sympathy to Texans reeling from Hurricane Harvey’s destruction, Congress has briefly united to pledge the full help of the federal government. Democrats were there solidly in support of their Republican colleagues in the solidly Republican state. Truly, as President Obama said many times during his eight years in office, in times of crisis we are not red and blue America, but a united America.
