Ways of Seeing by Ruth Farmer: Still no good substitute for reading

Posted on January 3, 2019 |
By Ruth Farmer

Farmer, Ruth.jpg

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the act of reading. More specifically, I’ve been thinking about the act of reading the printed book. I became an avid reader at a young age. I read just about anything, including science fiction, comic books, and my mother’s romances and mysteries.

Jessie Raymond: Stodgy clangers & welcome civility

Posted on January 3, 2019 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

While browsing through Netflix over the holidays, I discovered “The Great British Baking Show.”

I’m in love.

Beaten down by the increasingly distressing onslaught of daily news, I have found this show to be the perfect escape. It’s got everything: a gentle pastoral setting, British accents, yummy-looking sweets, witty repartee and a competition so civilized that the contestants sometimes help one another. Really.

Letter to the editor: Strangers kindly helped her out

Posted on January 3, 2019 |
By Karen Bolmer

I would sincerely like to thank the very kind people (strangers) who helped me when I slid into a snow bank and suddenly found my rental car sticking across the road on an icy hill with no cell service in the middle of the night last week.

Letter to the editor: S.C. resident recalls Bristol

Posted on January 3, 2019 |
By Graydon Kingsland

Editor’s note: The letter writer, a 1947 graduate of Bristol High School, sent this message to last spring’s graduates of Mount Abraham Union High School and recently passed it on to us.

—————

By way of these cards and this letter I wish to express my pleasure, appreciation and extreme thankfulness for having lived in Bristol, Vermont and having attended your school system for the many years that I was a Bristol resident.

Letter to the editor: History of world exploitation

Posted on January 3, 2019 |
By Paul Stone

A Response to David Moats’s insightful guest editorial in the Addison Independent on Dec. 27, about the decline of rural America and Vermont.

My response is a response to a friend about her concern about a 15,000 cow dairy farm in Indiana producing milk for Walmart.

Everybody wants everything cheaper. That’s why they go to Walmart. Even I go there.

Letter to the editor: Ehlers pitches amendment to Vermont Constitution

Posted on January 3, 2019 |
By James Ehlers

As you know, 2019 is a constitutional amendment year, with the next not being until 2023. For this reason, I ask, on behalf of a broad constituency of Vermonters, for your consideration of and assistance in amending our Vermont Constitution beginning this coming legislative session.

Editorial: Bristol's rocky road with Vermont Gas

Posted on December 31, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

When Vermont Gas laid out its plans to extend natural gas service to Middlebury, with offshoots to Vergennes and Bristol, it seemed like the natural order of how things would pan out. The state mandate to Vermont Gas, as a utility with a monopoly on natural gas transmission, is to extend natural gas to as many Vermonters as possible while not sending costs to its customers soaring.

Letter to the editor: Avoiding school shootings requires all in community

Posted on December 31, 2018 |
By Kurt Broderson

I am sure there will be many letters written in response to news of our community’s near miss: “Police, school officials avert Middlebury middle school shooting,” Dec. 18, 2018. I want to address one line in the article that might otherwise go unnoticed, in which John Flowers writes that this near tragedy is “a lesson for educators to invite more frank discussion from students about safety issues in and out of school.”

Letter to the editor: Border wall an ineffective answer to real problems

Posted on December 31, 2018 |
By Peter Grant

We can be sure that someone has tried to tell Trump that the biggest entry to the U.S. of drugs and aliens will not be closed by a wall since that entry is right through our customs checking. There are too many trucks coming through our borders for customs officials to check more than a small percentage. So they guess which ones to check. Trucks that have drugs well hidden and trucks with humans cramped in hot, airless boxes seeking entry to the U.S.

It would cost a small percentage of his wall to train more customs agents for our borders.
