Letter to the editor: Growth is not a panacea

Posted on July 3, 2019 |
By David Tier

The U.S. Energy Information administration reports the U.S. fossil fuel consumption increased 4 percent from 2017 to 2018, to the highest ever. Economic development without fuel use growth theoretically may be possible, but instead of slowing climate change we are driving the heedless bulldozers of development straight to oblivion.

Posted on July 1, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

As we approach the nation’s Fourth of July celebration this year, it’s worth noting the reason: The 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain, to escape what they considered the heavy hand of the British empire.

Opinion: See something, say something

By Jan Demers

Demars, Jan.jpg

She is a single mother of two children aged 8 and 10 years. The family became homeless initially due to domestic violence. She coped by staying at a motel while occasionally couch surfing at a family member’s home for nearly four months. The family found an apartment and applied for security deposit assistance through the Housing Opportunity grant.

Posted on July 1, 2019 |
By Don Turner

Every year, when budget writers in Montpelier begin their work — and legislators begin to determine what to spend — the backdrop of these conversations is marked by a unavoidable reality: Vermont has a serious problem with its unfunded liabilities.

Letter to the editor: Cut emissions now to prevent catastrophe

Posted on July 1, 2019 |
By Lynn Goldfarb

Thanks to the writer of the letter “Faulty logic in climate change argument” (Addison Independent, June 17), which provided a science-based refutation of a climate change denier letter. However, we need to stop spending our time defending climate science and focus on solutions to the climate crisis.

By Princess Montpelier

Regarding the column “A late bid for the presidency” by Gregory Dennis, published June 27:

Thank you! Thank You, Mr. Dennis and the Addison Independent, which facilitated this via publication.

Since the tragic and sorrowful incident and picture of a young father enveloping his toddler daughter with his t-shirt consequently drowning, I have been tearing up and at times uncontrollably shaking and crying.

Opinion: Paid-leave bill good for Vermont

Posted on June 27, 2019 |
By Robin Scheu

Scheu, Robin.jpg

Ways of Seeing: Of drawing and inherent biases

Posted on June 27, 2019 |
By Kate Gridley

Gridley, Kate - Ways of Seeing 2016.jpg

I have been thinking a lot lately about why people draw. Partly it is because every year in June I teach a drawing workshop in my studio. People from far and near come to draw in my studio for all kinds of different reasons. “I want to learn how to draw — I mean really draw.” “Drawing scares me, but I have always imagined it being part of my life.” “Now that I am retired, I want to get back to drawing, which I haven’t done since I was a kid.” “When I travel, I’d like to be able to record what I am seeing.”

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

News item from The N.Y. Times: “Joe Sestak, a former Navy admiral and congressman from Pennsylvania, said he was joining the crowded field of Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 … Mr. Sestak became the 24th Democratic candidate running for president.

“His announcement came later than those of the other Democratic candidates. He said the delay was because he had wanted to spend time with his daughter,” who had been ill.
