Around the Bend: Insects can give you a nervous tick

Posted on May 31, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

The mild winter seemed too good to be true. And it was. The downright tolerable temperatures allowed an unprecedented number of ticks to survive and, according to the news, they’re out in force this year.

If you’re the kind of person — like me — who lives in a constant state of unease, believing that bugs exist primarily to crawl on you, summer is already a nerve-wracking time of itchy paranoia. Now there’s a bumper crop of critters that want to bury themselves in your skin, suck your blood and spread disease.

Kill me now.

Editorial: Distinction needed between active party and interested citizen in Bristol

Posted on May 24, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

It’s unfortunate the Bristol town selectboard went through a selection process for a planning commission member, made an informed decision and is now temporarily reneging on the board’s preferred choice. The board’s about-face is based on a rational policy, but the imposition in this case may have been made in haste and without needed distinctions about what constitutes legal standing.

Editorial: Thanks, a million times over

Posted on May 24, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In honoring the dead, we honor the living. That’s saying is never truer than in this nation’s observance of those who have served in the armed services.

This weekend, Memorial Day services around the nation will host parades, bands will play, flags will be placed at gravesites, and the nation as a whole will take a collective moment to remember those who have died in the service of the country.

Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors all those who have served, or are serving, in the armed services whether in peacetime or wartime.

Clippings: Big city gets creemee-d by county

Remember that old song about New York City from “On the Town,” the 1944 musical? “The Bronx is up, but the Battery’s down/The people ride in a hole in the groun’/New York, New York, it’s a helluva town!”

Between the Lines: Curmudgeonly commencement advice

Posted on May 24, 2012 |
By Greg Dennis

Once again this year, I have been asked to be a last-minute fill-in as the Middlebury College commencement speaker.

Those of you who were at last year’s commencement will find this especially puzzling. You may recall that my speech ended with a public disavowal by the college president, an escort off the premises by campus security officers, and the filing of multiple charges against me.

But my attorney assures me that most of the charges have been settled. And (more good news), the visits to my parole officer have been reduced from daily down to weekly.

Editorial: Bristol: Closer to consensus

Posted on May 21, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

That three dozen Bristol residents turned out to the first public hearing held by the selectboard last week to review the town plan bodes well for the process. That most of the audience gave favorable reviews of the proposed plan, and were interested primarily in tweaking a few words and sentences also bodes well for what may be a long-sought consensus.

To be sure, residents found a few things they hope will be changed.

The state legislature’s decision to debate and pass an anti-fracking bill, which Gov. Peter Shumlin signed into law last week, is not only good government, it is consistent with the state’s history of being in the forefront of environmental protection efforts.

Guest Editorial: The high cost of obesity

Posted on May 17, 2012 |
By Emerson K. Lynn

In 1986, it was estimated that the cost of obesity in the United States amounted to about 5 percent of total health care spending. Today, that figure has more than tripled to 15 percent, meaning it costs us $350 billion a year to treat.

That’s bad enough. Worse is the prospect that the costs will continue to escalate and that Type 2 diabetes is becoming prevalent among children and teens.

Clippings: How to make big bucks on the net

When I was a kid you got your big ideas out of the back pages of comic books. You could get a booklet by Charles Atlas that showed you how to stop being a 98-pound weakling and instead become the buff BMOC that would get the girls.
