Clippings: Ambition can be for greater good

Posted on December 29, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

2011 probably won’t go down as a banner year here or worldwide.

Water provided many memories, and not many of them pleasant. One of 2011’s first images that seared itself on my consciousness came from msnbc.com. I logged on one morning and was stunned to see for the first time a picture of Japan’s east coast after the devastating tsunami.

A later image that lingers is the video of Bartonsville’s covered bridge collapsing into Irene’s surging waters.

In between fell spring’s seemingly unceasing rain.

Around the bend: Capping a delightfully dull year

Posted on December 29, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Being lazy, I thought I’d wrap up 2011 by copying the Addison Independent and making a chronology of all the noteworthy events in my year.

But I got stuck early on, when I realized that in January I only had two items to report: I finally replaced the burned-out light bulb in the fridge and I broke the handle on my windshield scraper.

For me, 2011 was not a year of living dangerously.

Clippings: Internet freedom tops holiday wish list

Posted on December 22, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

This year, all I want for Christmas is an open Internet. I’m looking at you, Congress.

Normally I’d just ask for an iPad. It’s not like I haven’t been drooling over that page on the Apple website for quite a while. Or maybe a new smartphone, since I may or may not have dropped mine on the treadmill earlier this week and done irreparable damage. Or, hey, maybe a new camera. Mine’s going on seven years old, and it’s getting harder to take photos or videos that anyone wants to see.

Politically Thinking: Brock facing an uphill challenge

Posted on December 22, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

Randy Brock, the Franklin County state senator and former state auditor, announced two weeks ago that he would be running for governor in 2012 as the Republican candidate. What are the opportunities and challenges facing Brock as he begins his gubernatorial campaign?

Brock has experience as a statewide candidate, having run for auditor in 2004 and 2006. He is very knowledgeable on the issues facing Vermont, and will present his views effectively on the campaign trail. He will be a worthy opponent in debates with Gov. Peter Shumlin.

Between the Lines: Have yourself a merry 'Christmukah'

Posted on December 22, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

This year’s Christmas column comes in three parts: A Scrooge-like rant; an interlude in which the author repents of his Ebenezerish qualities; and an uplifting conclusion of peace, love and joy.

First, the rant.

Of all the aggravating little pieces of political correctness to which we have been subjected over the years, “Happy Holidays” is the worst.

Guest editorial: Will England's move to nationalism erode EU's decades-old unity?

Posted on December 15, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

Last Friday, at the European Summit meeting in Brussels, British Conservative Party Prime Minister David Cameron refused to unconditionally guarantee a Eurozone “Stability Union” designed to mitigate the ongoing economic crisis in Europe, saying that British opposition was the right decision for England and has helped protect her economic interests.

Around the Bend: Keeping Christmas real simple

Posted on December 15, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

It’s Dec. 15. For those of us who celebrate Christmas, that gives us 10 days to get ready. Nine, really, because the 15th is almost over. Eight, if you count Christmas Eve as part of the holiday. It’s almost here.

I don’t know about you, but I’m good to go.

Clippings: Split holidays can bind family bonds

Posted on December 15, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

This column is not for everyone. It’s about Christmas and the holidays, but also about divorce, raising a split family and making it all work during this special time of the year — and beyond.

As optimists, it’s human nature to downplay the struggles and seize the high points in life. The squeals of laughter and excitement of small children on Christmas mornings are surely memories to cherish. The shuttling of kids from one house to the other on Christmas day, not so much.

Two recent proposals by Gov. Peter Shumlin conflict in surprising ways, and neither serve the state’s best interest.

Let me explain.

Editorial: So little can mean so much

Posted on December 8, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Let’s be plain. According to the level of giving to date, the United Way campaign this year may fall short. One likely reason is that those who normally set aside funds for charitable giving may have doled out some of those funds to relief efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. Statewide, more than $1,894,331 million has been collected through the United Ways of Vermont for relief to Irene’s victims, of which $81,000 was raised through the United Way of Addison County.
