EB-5 funding: Dare to think big

Posted on October 1, 2012 |

Let’s get to the take home moment first, then we’ll back into the ground-breaking news last week concerning the $500 million economic development initiative launched in the Northeast Kingdom: Dare to think big; all it takes to make it a reality here is vision, enthusiasm and shoe leather.

Keep that in mind as you read the details of the $500 million package that could produce up to 10,000 jobs (5,000 permanent) in a section of the state that has historically seen high unemployment and a stagnant economy.

Editorial: Big box stores, small towns and the lessons learned

Posted on September 27, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

At issue with the five-year update of Middlebury’s town plan is a crucial question: should the town keep a cap limiting retail stores to 50,000 square feet.

The measure has been part of the town plan for several years now, and was initially adopted to prevent the location of a Wal-Mart, or any other big-box store, to locate on the town’s outskirts or become the anchor of another strip-type mall on the town’s periphery. If past surveys are an accurate reflection of the public mood, most residents do not want the town to become a haven for big box stores.

Clippings: Learning to listen in a narcissistic land

In an essay written by a Ripton 15-year-old student contemplating the changes she faced moving from her middle school of 26 students to the 600-plus students at Middlebury Union High School, she touched on a striking revelation that many adults would do well to ponder: through her studies she had gained a sensitivity to the world around her.

In the battle against the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus (two area men died this summer because of it), there is but one hope: to contain the spread of the Culiseta melanura mosquito, and to eradicate it wherever it is found.

Around the bend: Taking care of dinner, my way

Posted on September 27, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

A lot of people cook a turkey for Thanksgiving. A few people even raise their own. But I’m probably the only person in Addison County who has spent the past week giving her Thanksgiving turkey physical therapy.

See, not long ago a neighborhood dog attacked the four turkeys we raised this summer, killing one and making this one’s life flash before her eyes. We put her affairs in order but within two days she had made a miraculous recovery.

It didn’t last.

Between the lines: Pondering the Maine meaning of life

Posted on September 27, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

“We’re all bozos on the bus, so we might as well enjoy the ride.”

— Wavy Gravy

There’s something about the Maine coast that just swallows up your daily cares.

It buries them in the sandstone that’s shot through with quartz veins rising up from the ocean floor. Splinters them in the light playing off dark blue lagoons. Washes them away in the swell of waves slamming the shore and slipping back into the deep.

Editorial: Say it ain't so! OK, it isn't. Our newspaper is not shrinking

Posted on September 24, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

This past Thursday our readers were shocked to see our regular broadsheet edition shrunk down to a tabloid size. While the general layout looked familiar — with six beefy front page stories, great photos and teasers for inside stories — the photos were slightly distorted and it had an odd look that many readers couldn’t quite put their fingers on.

But readers did notice the smaller type size; and they let us know about it!

Community forum: No magic wand for the Middle East

Posted on September 24, 2012 |
By Haviland Smith

There is a persistent call here in the United States, particularly in today’s politically charged campaign season, for democracy to take over in the Middle East. We hear it from virtually every quarter — from the White House, from Republicans of almost every hue, and from pundits who write on Middle Eastern affairs. Clearly, America wants democracy to prosper in that region.

And it certainly would be nice. But just how likely is that to happen?

Editorial: Mitt pulls back the curtain

Posted on September 20, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

Talk about rich with irony. There’s Republican Mitt Romney denigrating 47 percent of Americans for not paying their fair share of taxes. He’s the multi-millionaire, after all, who refuses to release his income taxes over the past several years because all bets are that those reports will show he dodges hundreds of thousands in annual tax payments available to the super wealthy. Romney admits that he limits his tax liability to 10-13 percent annually — far less than the 35 percent most people in his income bracket pay.
