Clippings: What we have, others value highly

Vermont’s Town Meeting Day tradition, with one of the purest forms of democratic rule, falls in the midst of turbulent upheaval throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East and should prompt deep appreciation for what too many Vermonters take for granted.

But before looking inward, let’s look abroad.

Around the bend: Rare sunlight exposes chores to do

Posted on February 24, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last Friday, Mother Nature gave us a treat: nice weather.

The warm breeze and bright sunlight came as an unfamiliar surprise to county residents, who, upon stepping outside, squinted skyward and blinked, disoriented, much like Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day, but without the media attention. Was it time to wake up?

Between the Lines: All hail the mighty Zamboni

Posted on February 17, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

I’m going to write my next column about the Zamboni, I said to her.

She looked up from her Garnet Hill catalog and peered over the top of her glasses. She put down the catalog, its cover bright with spring fashions: “Why on earth would you want to write a column about the Zamboni, of all things?”

Everybody loves the Zamboni. It’s got a funny name and goes round and round turning distilled water into ice as smooth as glass. What could be cooler than that?

Editorial: Of hospitals, taxes and the holy grail

Posted on February 17, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Porter Hospital officials posed a legitimate beef with Gov. Peter Shumlin’s proposed provider tax on hospitals in a front page story in today’s Addison Independent: “These reductions will clearly impair our ability to be an effective partner in the way reform is occurring in this state, in the way that Gov. Shumlin and Gov.

Guest editorial: Stumbling in the ruins

Posted on February 14, 2011 |
By Haviland Smith

In his 1993 article in Foreign Policy titled “The Clash of Civilizations?” Samuel Huntington posits that “in the future ... countries with large numbers of people of different civilizations ... are candidates for dismemberment.” In this context, “civilizations” are defined by language, history, religion, customs and institutions.

Editorial: 'Early ed' bill goes astray

Posted on February 10, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

It’s that time of the legislative session in which a slew of bills are introduced with well-meaning intentions, but proceed with undue momentum and not enough skeptical scrutiny. H.97 is one of those bills. Advertised as a way to strengthen the state’s early education day-care facilities, the bill already has the preliminary endorsement of Gov. Peter Shumlin, 53 representatives and 11 senators, and the support of former Gov. Howard Dean — and yet it may do more harm than good in its current version and is irresponsible for its lack of fiscal prudence.

Editorial: Tackling the health care crisis

Posted on February 10, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Before critics pick apart the Shumlin administration’s health care proposal, Vermonters must step back a few paces and view the issue from afar.

Clippings: You are what you TiVo; press 'play'

Posted on February 10, 2011 |
By Trent Campbell

They say we only use 10 percent of our brain, but if you are like me you only use 10 percent of your TiVo. You know TiVo. It’s the digital video recorder that allows you to pause and rewind shows you are watching on your television and, more importantly, record shows that you are unable to watch at the time of broadcast because you are too busy actually living a productive life. Or you are too busy watching another television show. Or you are asleep.

Around the bend: Texting pushes my buttons; just call

Posted on February 10, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

I hate to sound like an old square, but I have to say it: I just don’t get this whole texting thing. What’s wrong with a phone call?

I admit a text message is more appropriate than a phone call in certain situations, like when it’s too loud to talk, or when you’re being held hostage by crazed gunmen and need to keep it down. But most of the time, I just don’t see the point.
