Clippings: Lessons learned from the bubble

Posted on August 9, 2012 |
By Lauren Davidson

I tend to get caught in bubbles. Metaphorical bubbles, that is.

Growing up in a suburban town in central Ohio and moving to Middlebury after high school, I am attracted to the sense of comfort that small towns provide. The familiar faces, streets and foods are among the many things that contribute to this feeling of ease.

More often than not, these small towns that I have grown to love are protection for many. Consistency and reliability allow us to rest within our comfort zones.

Politically Thinking: Leahy faces an important decision

Posted on August 9, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

On July 25, Vermont’s Patrick Leahy cast the 14,000th roll-call vote of his 38-year Senate career. Only six senators in the 224-year history of Congress have cast more votes than Leahy.

Editorial: Explaining policies that cause job losses/growth is key to Obama victory

Posted on August 9, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

No candidate wants to embrace a national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent and suggest it is an accomplishment of a president’s first four years in office. On the other hand, it is imperative the president remind the nation how far the economy had fallen in the aftermath of President George W. Bush’s policies, explain the depth of the Great Recession and the underlying reasons that prompted it, and promote how current policies are producing slow but steady improvement.

Those numbers don’t lie.

Editorial: Insight into county's character

Posted on August 6, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

It’s fair time in Addison County. As of Tuesday, the amusement rides will be swirling, 4-Hers will begin showing their livestock, and competitors in events like armwrestling and iron-pan throwing will set the stage for five days of friendly competition, including tractor pulling contests and the always-fun Demolition Derby.

And those are just a few of the highlights.

Editorial: Nation's wealth gap challenged

Posted on August 2, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s Sen. Bernie Sanders made national news this week when he tweeted that six members of the Walton family, which owns Walmart, own more wealth than the bottom 40 percent of Americans. Politifact, a non-partisan fact-checking institute that focuses on American politics, decided to check it out to see if the proverbially progressive Independent was on target or exaggerating for effect.

Editorial: Romney sends sour message

Posted on August 2, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. Mitt Romney’s trip abroad was an unmitigated disaster, giving his message handlers a tall order to fill — and not just because of his verbal gaffes.

Romney started off the trip by insulting the British and the London Olympic committee to no recognizable purpose, when it would have been so easy, and politic, to be polite (and silently helpful if he thought criticism could have been constructive.)

Clippings: Olympics 2012 are sports at their best

Posted on August 2, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

I knew the American Fab Five would win the women’s gymnastics title at the Olympics several hours before watching some of the action on television Tuesday evening. And I knew Michael Phelps would surpass the Olympic medal count on Tuesday by reaching 19, but fall short in the 200-meter fly by five-hundredths of a second.

But the headlines I saw on my email at work didn’t matter, I knew there was much more to the story.

Between the Lines: Lessons learned in 20 years of living

Posted on August 2, 2012 |
By Greg Dennis

On the verge of turning 60, I find that I’ve learned a few things. Here are some of them:

In the face of all the misery in this world, I don’t know of a better response than to try to be happy. And while I admire people who sacrifice their own happiness to make the world a better place, I think a wiser choice is to work both on giving something back and on developing one’s own inner happiness. The responsibility goes outward and inward.

Editorial: Tax plans define two candidates

Posted on July 30, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

In assessing the two leading presidential candidates, Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama, a good place to identify their respective priorities is to consider their tax plans.

Those proposals, after all, represent how each candidate intends to finance the nation’s business, to balance the budget and, if possible, to whittle away at the national debt.

Guest Editorial: What did Adam Smith really say?

Posted on July 26, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

As the campaign season begins to hit high tide, one of the more common motifs from conservatives is the lament that government inhibits growth and prosperity and that a truly “free market” would unleash the powers of the marketplace — the result being a society bathed in opulence.
