Victor Nuovo: Spinoza: Of empiricists and rationalists

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Victor Nuovo

Another important fact about Spinoza’s intellectual character is that he was a rationalist. I begin, then, by explaining what this means and how being a rationalist differs from being an empiricist. For it is commonly supposed that empiricism and rationalism are the two poles of modern philosophy. What’s the difference?

Opinion: Natural gas offer fails to deliver

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By David Tier

Set aside for the moment the absurdity of building more fossil fuel infrastructure in the twenty-first century, it’s obvious what Vermont Gas Company is doing with their pipelines.

They have a lot of expensive fracking equipment to pay for and which has created a glut on the market, holding down prices. They want to keep building pipelines until this artificial demand exceeds the supply, then they can declare a shortage and jack up prices. It’s a scam.

Opinion: Bucket lists tell volumes

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Laurie Borden

Haze, Praise and Field Days With all the divisiveness, conflict, hatred and confusion in our world today, it was refreshing to spend some time at Addison County Field Days. This event is vibrant, poignant, aromatic and enlightening. It might not be your cup of tea, but it is a slice of Vermont (served with a maple creemee) that gives us an opportunity to feel the heart and soul of this community. Whether you go for the tractor pulls, the animals, the food, the rides or just to people watch, you are bound to come away with a lesson, a love or a laugh.

Opinion: Delays plague rail bridges project

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Ian Ross

The town made its voice heard as to what it wants to see replacing the current bridges. Great! Then we see three or four delays in start of construction over the span of two years, before the town even gets decent details as to the actual size and scope of the project. I am just as angry as anyone in town over that deception. I think it’s good that all parties have stepped back to re-evaluate the situation. However, given my previous experience, I want to urge the municipal, state and federal parties involved to not drag their feet any further in this process.

Dear Sir/ Madame,

In late July I was on a cycling holiday and passed through the Addison area. A couple and a man helped me, a complete stranger, and I wish to acknowledge their kindnesses.

Editorial: Trump and the threat within

Posted on August 22, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The absurdity of today’s electorate teeters on the surreal. Trump supporters, in particular, defy rational thought: For much of the past year, they have sanctioned Trump’s outrageous statements, off-color remarks, racist and bigoted comments, and political positions that are often contrary to American principles — and then there is his obsessive compulsion to tell bald-faced lies, and repeat them over-and-over even when he knows they are untrue.

And yet, for many of these same Americans it is Democrat Hillary Clinton whom they believe is untrustworthy.

Opinion: There is a lot we can all do to prevent littering in town

Posted on August 22, 2016 |
By Therese Kirby

Dear Bristol Residents,

The Bristol Selectboard established a policy of “Pack In and Pack Out” for the Town Parks more than a year ago. This has been a long held practice of the State of Vermont and the Federal government for state and national parks. Most recently the Selectboard voted to remove the dog waste bags and dog waste container from the Town Green.
