Opinion: Insurance hikes give jolt to school budgets

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Laurie Childers

I received the following notice last week in my Addison Northwest Supervisory Union email account: “VEHI (a nonprofit org that provides health insurance benefits to school employees) files 7.9% Contribution Health Rate Renewal with Dept. of Financial Regulation” — 7.9 percent!

Act 46 enacted during the 2015 legislative session is requiring school districts to unify and cap their annual school budget increases to 2 percent or taxpayers will be penalized and have to collect $2 for every $1 over the cap. That is a hefty penalty.

Gregory Dennis: On a summer's high peaks quest, Middleburry woman climbs 46 peaks

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

Greg Dennis column color n Amy Sheldon on Skylight-03.jpg

Amy Sheldon wasn’t actually lost — she pretty much knew where she was in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks — but she felt lost. And alone.

In the dead center of the Adirondack wilderness and hiking by herself, she was headed up Cliff Mountain.

One source refers to Cliff as “the great Adirondack vertical swamp.” And as she started the climb on this cool, rainy day, Sheldon faced a trail with a lot of treacherously slippery rock.

Opinion: Views shaped by survival ethic

Posted on October 1, 2015 |
By Sean Parkyn

It is easy to think that with all the violence in the news today that the destructive side of human nature is getting worse. But a look at history will show that in fact our capacity for violence is not getting worse, but has stayed very much the same. Our potential for barbarity has existed alongside our potential for culture from ancient times up to the present day. The question has always been how to balance our instinctive drive for survival with how we view the world morally. It is our moral beliefs that inform our actions and these we learn at a young age.

Editorial: Randy Brock should be encouraged to run for Lt. Governor

Posted on September 28, 2015 |
By Emerson Lynn Jr.

One of the continual laments in Vermont politics is that the pool of talent is less than it should be. It’s always been a struggle to convince those most capable to give up their time and their peace of mind in exchange for the daily tumult, and often thankless task of governing.

So when we see someone with the talent, the experience and the hint of interest, it behooves us to give the person a gentle nudge.

The person with that talent and the experience is Randy Brock; our hope is to get him to run for Lieutenant Governor.

Community Forum: FDA should limit spread of drugs

Posted on September 28, 2015 |
By Gov. Peter Shumlin

A year and a half ago, I stood up before Vermonters and devoted my State of the State address to speaking about the opiate and heroin crisis affecting our state. Despite our best efforts since, this is not a battle we are winning. Now the Food and Drug Administration is recklessly making the problem worse with its decision to approve OxyContin for use by children as young as 11 years old.

Opinion: Thanks for the roadside assistance

Posted on September 28, 2015 |
By Stephanie C. Victoria

I’m writing to thank all the people who stopped to help me when my car went off the road in Monkton on Sept. 10.

Unfortunately, I was so disoriented immediately following the accident that I may not recognize those who stopped to help if I see you again. Please know I’m very appreciative.

Kate Armstrong of the Vermont State Police was a standout in the execution of her duties. Many thanks.

Opinion: Nuovo on Plato a welcome read

Photographs that teach me to see the world in new ways, poems that delve into places I’ve rarely gone, sports writing that electrifies and informs me, and now essays on “The Republic” by Victor Nuovo — what an amazing newspaper. I love it.

Opinion: Carol's news bittersweet; essence is in Middlebury

Posted on September 28, 2015 |
By Ian Ross

Hearing that John Melanson is expanding on his business is very pleasing to me. I can remember when John and Carol were in our house discussing potential plans for their business, and they were dreaming big. Hopes included having a shop in downtown Middlebury and eventually opening a shop north or south of town where commuters could get their caffeine fix quick. Sound familiar? I know all this because Carol was my mother and I was living at home while attending college.

Victor Nuovo: Socrates preached self examination

Posted on September 24, 2015 |
By Victor Nuovo

Justice and Plato's Republic standing hed box.jpg

Socrates was not handsome. He was short, stocky, thick limbed, bow-legged, and large headed. He had a snub nose and protruding eyes, which served him well. His detractors called him a busybody, a buttonholer. He had the ability in extraordinary measure to engage people in conversation, fixing them in the intense glance of his bulging eyes, and to cause them to admit things about themselves that they did not care to acknowledge. And this is how he spent his time.
