Clippings: Solar panels spark hot interest

Posted on February 9, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

OK, OK. We’d had numerous people stop and ask various members of the Addison Independentstaff about the new décor on our southern-facing roof.

We put up two banks of solar panels on our roof late this fall, and they’ve generated a lot more interest than I might have expected. So, here’s the story:

We’d had a slow leak in our roof this past fall, ruining a ceiling tile or two, and causing us to push the photocopier off to the side for a couple days. Nothing major, but something to fix.

Around the bend: Weather allows time for a deal

By Jessie Raymond

Since moving into our old farmhouse five years ago, Mark and I knew we’d eventually like to make some improvements. With a combination of indecision, insufficient funds and outright hostile disagreement, however, we’ve never gotten around to any renovations. But this winter’s oddly pleasant weather has given us the opportunity.

Super Bowl ad scores TD

By Angelo S. Lynn

I’m not the dyed-in-the-wool football fan I used to be.

But I tuned in Sunday to watch the New York Giants snatch the momentum away from the New England Patriots late in the second half, and saw Eli Manning march his team down to a sure winning field goal and accidentally stumble in for the winning touchdown instead.

Editorial: Job growth reality vs. myth

Posted on February 6, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Mitt Romney, as well as most of the other Republican candidates for president, has run his campaign focused almost solely on President Obama’s sorry performance on creating jobs. Appealing to the conservatives in Nevada and Florida, he promised a robust period of job growth (of what percent he didn’t say) compared to the slow climb the job market has seen for the past three years.

As the Republican nomination approaches its foregone conclusion and hands the reins to Romney, President Obama’s response will pit reality against theory.

Between the Lines: Tips to cure the winter blues

Tips to cure the winter blues

Three months into Permanent November (A.K.A., Global Warming, Vermont Style), this year it’s even harder than usual to know how to have fun getting through the rest of the winter.

Usually we can rely upon typical winter activities — skiing, snowboarding, sledding or even just a nice walk in a snow-covered park — to get us through February and March.

But with little-to-no snow this winter, all bets are off.

One solution? I’ve been making do with a lot of outdoor ice skating.

Politically Thinking: Education is best in war on obesity

Posted on February 2, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

Childhood obesity is a growing public health problem in the United States. More than one-third of all children and adolescents in America are estimated to be overweight or obese, and thus at greater risk for developing heart disease and diabetes later in their lives. Childhood obesity rates in Vermont, at about 25 percent, are somewhat lower than in the nation as a whole.

Guest Editorial: Give students a good reason to graduate

Posted on February 2, 2012 |
By Emerson K. Lynn

When schools lose a student to the streets it’s a compounded loss that multiplies its way through society. When students drop out, they limit their potentials and fall prey to higher divorce rates, lower incomes and fewer opportunities. They often become part of the cycle of poverty, which then traps their children. The challenge is to figure out how to keep the students in school.

Clippings: The return to America's pastime

Posted on February 2, 2012 |
By Kyle Finck

Longtime Independent readers may have noticed a new byline thrown in with the usual suspects these past few weeks. Along with being the lucky winter intern for the voice of Addison County, I am the sophomore right fielder on the Middlebury Panthers baseball team. Mother Nature’s lackadaisical winter has gotten me thinking about baseball early this year and led me to ponder how we can improve on last year’s abysmal attendance.

Around the Bend: Theft was strangely reassuring

Posted on January 26, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

It’s not easy being scatterbrained.

My mind is constantly running in different directions, and I forget things. Just keeping track of my car keys occupies a good portion of my brain each day, and the portion that’s left can’t handle the remaining workload. I forget not only what things I need to do, but also whether I have — or have not — already done them. You can’t imagine the trouble this gets me into.
