Note of appreciation: Community support made pumpkin patch a success

Posted on November 23, 2015 |
By Judy Doria

Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center gives a great big THANK YOU to all of you who worked with us to make this year’s Lighted Pumpkin Patch possible with over 700 carved and lit pumpkins as well as 200 luminaries cut by the Durham family. This is truly a community event, both supported and enjoyed by our community that literally hundreds of our area residents are a part of.

Note of appreciation: Empty Bowl Dinner was a success

Posted on November 23, 2015 |
By Lily Bradburn

As the new local food access coordinator for HOPE I was thrilled to attend the Empty Soup Bowl Dinner in early November. The Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op put together a wonderful evening, and I was thankful to see so many folks coming together to try alleviate food insecurity in Addison County through contributions to HOPE and CVOEO.

Note of appreciation: City club thankful for help with event

Posted on November 23, 2015 |
By Jeff Fritz

In this season of gratitude, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes and the Vergennes Partnership want to express their thanks to the many organizations and individuals who contributed so much to this year’s Pumpkins in the Park event.

Five churches, eight restaurants, two service organizations, two city departments and five members of the accordion-playing Vorsteveld family all lent a hand, showing once again that the spirit of cooperation is alive and well in the greater Vergennes community.

Editorial: The wrong-headed appeal to using force on ISIS

Posted on November 23, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

It is no secret that using military force against the Islamic State, or ISIS, in the wake of the Paris attacks holds a prevailing appeal to a majority of Republicans. They like a president who takes charge of the situation, hits them with “shock and awe” and says, in effect, “Here, take that, and don’t do it again or we’ll hit you harder.”

Jessie Raymond: Time to end the war on Black Friday

Posted on November 19, 2015 |
By Jessie Raymond

What is this country coming to?

According to the news, Black Friday, that day-after-Thanksgiving retail frenzy we have all come to love and fear, is getting scaled back.

This year, some retailers are encouraging people to max out their credit cards over the entire month leading up to Christmas, rather than just on one heady, potentially life-threatening day.

We can’t let this happen.

Opinion: Cutting health care benefits is a bad alternative

Posted on November 19, 2015 |
By Ellen Oxfeld

Recently there has been some controversy over the decision at Porter Medical Center to no longer provide health care benefits to workers, including nurses, who are employed over 20 hours per week, but under 30 hours. The argument at first glance sounds compelling; we in Addison County benefit from having a medical center in Middlebury, and Porter needs to trim extra expenses in order to keep its doors open.

Opinion: Paid sick days a sound objective

Posted on November 19, 2015 |
By Theodore Manila

I strongly advocate for the passage of the Healthy Workplace Bill H.187. Passing the bill would give many more workers paid sick days and be a step towards a healthier Vermont for all.

Opinion: Pointing out inaccuracies in solar opinion piece

Posted on November 19, 2015 |
By Duane Peterson

We understand that folks can have preferences over the use of property owned by their neighbors. But facts do matter. In a recent opinion piece (“Solar energy projects should be done properly” Nov. 9, 2015), the Rev. Dr. Stephanie Allen made assertions that are not true about her neighbor’s pursuit of a Community Solar Array.

Opinion: Paid sick time could prevent hardship

Posted on November 19, 2015 |
By Jes Berry

All Vermonters deserve the right to earn sick time at their jobs. We need to pass the Healthy Workplaces bill, H.187 — and ask that the Senate pass it into law when they return to Montpelier this January.

Our family was directly impacted by my lack of pay during my son’s illness. I went without five weeks of pay over the course of five months while my son spent weeks in the hospital. My lack of income during that time has resulted in significant financial hardship this fall.
