Opinion: Legal marijuana the right move

Posted on March 19, 2015 |
By Winslow Colwell

I’m writing today in response to the recent letter signed by various chiefs of police regarding marijuana law in Vermont.

I’m very glad that they have such concern for the young people of Addison County. As the father of a pre-teen I truly appreciate that they are looking out for the welfare of young people in our community. Reading their letter, however, leaves me feeling that they are a bit out of touch with reality.

Community Forum: Congress must pass new FOIA law

Posted on March 19, 2015 |
By Sen. Patrick Leahy

Sunshine Week is a time to celebrate one of our nation’s most basic values, the public’s “right to know.” Our very democracy is built on the idea that our government should not operate in secret. James Madison, a staunch defender of open government, whose birthday we celebrate each year during Sunshine Week, wisely noted that for our democracy to succeed, people “must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives.” Transparency enables the American people to hold their government accountable.

With Statehouse discussion dominated this session by the $112 million budget shortfall and education reform measures focused on consolidation and improving outcomes, energy-related issues have fallen out of the spotlight to the detriment of Vermonters.

Editorial: Dr. Alan Ayer

Posted on March 19, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Few people touch the lives of families as directly as do obstetricians, and Dr. Alan Ayer literally touched the lives of thousands of families during his 36-year-career in Middlebury while delivering more than 6,000 babies. For almost all of those years, he worked with his founding partner, Dr. James “Chip” Malcolm, at Addison Associates in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a practice they jointly established in 1980.

Guest Editorial: $200 million for Vt.'s health exchange? What's Plan B?

Posted on March 16, 2015 |
By Emerson Lynn

The cost of the Vermont Health Care exchange recently took another jump. It is now expected to cost $200 million, which is the equivalent of billing every man, woman and child in Vermont $320.

For something that has yet to work.

Vermont’s exchange serves roughly 30,000 people (a fraction of what was intended,) which means the per-person cost is $6,666.

Opinion: VUHS cuts would hurt kids, school, property values

Posted on March 16, 2015 |
By Christopher Wyckoff

As a Vergennes Union High School faculty member, local taxpayer and parent, I find myself in a very awkward situation. As a faculty member I support my school and my community. I want to make it clear that my job is not in jeopardy from the proposed cuts. As a local taxpayer and parent, I feel an obligation to write this letter to inform the public on some of the details of the proposed budget and some of my thoughts on this process.

Opinion: United Way thanks restaurants

Posted on March 16, 2015 |
By Nancy Luke

Dine United Way Restaurants make a difference. As we all know, needy families and individuals in our community go without proper food, shelter and essential medical care every day due to a variety of factors including low wages, job loss, injuries, illness, age, domestic violence or divorce. While all of us are susceptible to hard times, children and the elderly are at the most risk, and they make up the largest number of clients our funded partners serve.
