Between the Lines: Human folly? There's a code for that

Human folly? There’s a code for that

A key premise of Vermont’s admirable attempt to institute single-payer health care is that it will rationalize an often irrational system. With smart people like Gov. Peter Shumlin and local House Rep. Mike Fisher leading the charge, maybe it will.

Guest editorial: A daunting task requires action equal to the challenge

By Emerson K. Lynn

There are countless benefits being conducted in Vermont on behalf of those affected by Tropical Storm Irene, and they are raising significant amounts of money. Last weekend’s Phish concert in Essex Junction raised $1.2 million on behalf of the state’s disaster relief fund. In Waitsfield, a solo concert by Grace Potter being hosted by Sugarbush Resort is expected to raise $350,000 for a local relief effort in the Mad River Valley. Similar events are happening in central and southern Vermont with each passing week.

Editorial: Give to have a 'perfect' day

By Angelo S. Lynn

This Thursday and Saturday, about 600 volunteers will fan out across the county in the annual Days of Caring event that launches the fund-raising campaign for the United Way of Addison County. The goal remains the same, $775,000, as it has been over the past couple of years, but the challenges are bigger than ever: on top of a lackluster economy that has yet to recover from the Great Recession of 2007-08, are disaster relief efforts to help those individuals and communities devastated by the flooding of Tropical Storm Irene.

Politically Thinking: Extra session could focus on Irene

Posted on September 15, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

When the Vermont Legislature adjourned last May, lawmakers set Oct. 18 as the date for a possible special session on the consequences of federal budget cuts on the state’s finances. The special congressional committee established in the agreement to raise the federal debt ceiling will not report until November, so the extent of federal budget cuts impacting Vermont will not be known until early next year.

Editorial: Midd River controversy could be role model for river restoration

Posted on September 15, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

It’s always hard to say you’re sorry, but anytime 50 residents turn out to a routine meeting of any community board, you know something has upset a large segment of the public and an apology may be in order. And so it was on Tuesday when a crowd addressed the Middlebury selectboard on what many perceived as overzealous work to shore-up town bridges and a retaining wall in the river that, as a consequence, has done what some say is irreparable harm.

Guest Editorial: We are, after all, Vermonters

Posted on September 12, 2011 |
By Brian Searles (VTrans secretary)

When Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont two weeks ago, Vermont’s highway crews were on the front lines of the disaster. Throughout the night of the storm, I was in contact with men and women who were battling floods and torrential rain to close unsafe roads and try to assess damage to bridges and highways, often at great personal risk. The work of these highway maintenance workers during and after the flood has been nothing short of heroic. They’ve showed how much we Vermonters are capable of when the chips are down.

Clippings: College books lead to Chapter 11

Posted on September 8, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Believe it or not, we reporters are asked from time to time if we are ever going to write a book. I personally take such inquiries as compliments — unless of course they come from a friend or wisecracking family member who adds, “You might as well write a book, you’re already doing a great job with fiction right now.”

But if I were going to write a book with the prospect of making a buck or two, I’m not sure I would delve into the fiction genre.

The real money seems to be in college textbooks.

Around the Bend: Too busy to worry about boredom

Posted on September 8, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

"I’m bored.”

So goes the refrain of schoolchildren everywhere as summer vacation drags on. Hearing it from my 12-year-old in recent weeks, I realized I hadn’t said those words in years. When did I stop being bored?

When I grew up, I guess.

Editorial: 'Indomitable' Vermonters will rise to meet challenges of storm's destruction

Posted on September 8, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

For the moment, Gov. Peter Shumlin is chief consoler for those most directly affected by Tropical Storm Irene’s flooding, cheerleader to boost the state’s important tourism economy, and primary care doctor — treating as many ailments as possible as he goes town-to-town.

In each of these meetings he reassures community members that the state and federal governments are working as quickly as they can to get things back to normal, and then he offers a few words of hope and inspiration.

Between the Lines: Making northern neighbors feel bienvenue

Posted on September 8, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

The Burlington City Council, which as one member notes “normally can’t decide on which side the sun will rise,” has unanimously decided to make it official: People from Quebec are welcome in Vermont.

It hardly seems that the Quebecois need encouragement, judging by the number of Quebec plates in the parking garage of the Burlington airport.
