Editorial: AG race — Sorrell vs. Donovan

Posted on August 20, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Primary races often pose the toughest challenges for voters. Because the candidates often come from the same political framework and their political sensibilities are more similar than not, the choice hangs in the balance of which candidate can do a better job of executing policies that are a hair’s distance apart.

That’s the case in the Democratic primary race next Tuesday, Aug. 28, against incumbent Attorney General Bill Sorrell and challenger TJ Donovan.

Clippings: Looking back at a year and a half

Posted on August 16, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

When I moved back to the U.S. from China in December 2010, I felt rootless.

Growing up in a small township in western Pennsylvania and having graduated from a college of 1,600, I was fortunate to have had my formative years shaped by tight-knit communities. While I found a similar sense of support teaching at a Chinese public school after graduating from Kenyon College, that feeling of community eluded me the following year.

Around the bend: Slow and steady wins the race

Posted on August 16, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

A friend recently asked me why I continue to grow vegetables every year when I so clearly hate gardening.

Who says I hate it?

She reminded me that in June I described gardening as “neither easy nor particularly enjoyable” and “the pits.”

Well, yeah.

But I never said I hated it. In fact, right now I actually like it a lot.

Editorial: National debt: cause and effect

Posted on August 13, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

The bad news is the national debt was $15.1 trillion as of the end of 2011 and growing at a clip of about 8 percent. The good news is that rate of growth in the debt is half what it was when President Obama took office.

Clippings: Lessons learned from the bubble

Posted on August 9, 2012 |
By Lauren Davidson

I tend to get caught in bubbles. Metaphorical bubbles, that is.

Growing up in a suburban town in central Ohio and moving to Middlebury after high school, I am attracted to the sense of comfort that small towns provide. The familiar faces, streets and foods are among the many things that contribute to this feeling of ease.

More often than not, these small towns that I have grown to love are protection for many. Consistency and reliability allow us to rest within our comfort zones.

Politically Thinking: Leahy faces an important decision

Posted on August 9, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

On July 25, Vermont’s Patrick Leahy cast the 14,000th roll-call vote of his 38-year Senate career. Only six senators in the 224-year history of Congress have cast more votes than Leahy.

Editorial: Explaining policies that cause job losses/growth is key to Obama victory

Posted on August 9, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

No candidate wants to embrace a national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent and suggest it is an accomplishment of a president’s first four years in office. On the other hand, it is imperative the president remind the nation how far the economy had fallen in the aftermath of President George W. Bush’s policies, explain the depth of the Great Recession and the underlying reasons that prompted it, and promote how current policies are producing slow but steady improvement.

Those numbers don’t lie.

It’s fair time in Addison County. As of Tuesday, the amusement rides will be swirling, 4-Hers will begin showing their livestock, and competitors in events like armwrestling and iron-pan throwing will set the stage for five days of friendly competition, including tractor pulling contests and the always-fun Demolition Derby.

And those are just a few of the highlights.

Editorial: Nation's wealth gap challenged

Posted on August 2, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s Sen. Bernie Sanders made national news this week when he tweeted that six members of the Walton family, which owns Walmart, own more wealth than the bottom 40 percent of Americans. Politifact, a non-partisan fact-checking institute that focuses on American politics, decided to check it out to see if the proverbially progressive Independent was on target or exaggerating for effect.
