Opinion: Merger of ACSU would cut taxes, build stronger schools

Posted on February 11, 2016 |
By Brenda Fleming

I’m writing to tell you why I’m voting in favor of the Addison Central Supervisory Union unification plan and to ask you to please join me in voting YES on March 1.

This law encourages school consolidation at the supervisory union level. For a district like ACSU, where all elementary schools feed into the middle/high school, early action capitalizes on the most favorable tax incentives, secures small schools grants and protects merged entities from declining enrollments.

Opinion: Now's a good time to allign ourselves

Posted on February 11, 2016 |
By Joanna Colwell

I am typing these words on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. Also known as Imbolc, on the Pagan calendar, this day marks the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox. By the time you are reading these words, we’ll be that much further along toward spring! The light looks different outside. The sun is a little higher in the sky. Birds are singing, perhaps fooled by a freakishly warm first day of February.

Editorial: Broadening Bernie's message

Posted on February 10, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

NPR posted two telling photos of the winning presidential candidates in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. Democrat Bernie Sanders was pictured with his right arm held high overhead with a clinched fist, lips closed tight and a determined look that the fight he has fought his entire life had begun on a national level. It was not a look that reflected triumph, but rather a realization that he had earned the chance to pursue his sense of economic justice on a national stage.

Community Forum: Porter Medical Center official expresses optimism

Posted on February 8, 2016 |
By Maureen McClaughlin

The future of Porter Medical Center has never been brighter.

That is a very broad, potentially provocative, statement — especially in light of all of the recent changes, challenges and difficult decisions our community has been hearing about. Nevertheless, it is a statement that is embraced by the Porter Medical Center Board of Directors, and one which we believe truly characterizes our board’s belief and commitment to the future of the organization.

Opinion: Act 46 isn't progress for schools

Posted on February 8, 2016 |
By Robert Bernstein

Act 46 of 2015, the school consolidation law, is a mistake.

Brought into being first by legislators responsible for school funding who perceived constituent discontent with school financing, it does little or nothing to solve funding problems which will, shortly, be headlines again, as they have always been.

Editorial: Komline's beef with sick leave is all politics, not defending small business

Posted on February 8, 2016 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Of the issues facing Vermont’s Legislature this session, the opposition to a modest paid sick leave bill for Vermont businesses has been overplayed by a handful of Republicans seeking to “protect” small businesses against the rule of big government.

Opinion: Rikert a jewell for Nordic skiers

Posted on February 8, 2016 |
By Bill McKibben

One small Addison County miracle that readers might not be aware of: The Nordic skiing up at Bread Loaf/Rikert Nordic Center is quite wonderful.

Despite the worst winter in living memory, Mike Hussey and his crew have managed to keep five kilometers of beautiful groomed snow alive through the droughts and rains, which means that our impressive high schoolers and Bill Koch League kids and the dynamic college team have been able to keep skiing, and the rest of us too.

Eric L. Davis: State's primary could miss the mark

Posted on February 4, 2016 |
By Eric L Davis

The rules used by both Vermont political parties to allocate national convention delegates could result in delegations that do not reflect the preferences of the voters in the March 1 Vermont primary.

Vermont sends 16 delegates to the Republican National Convention. If one candidate receives 50 percent or more of the primary vote — an unlikely outcome, considering the number of Republican candidates — that candidate wins all 16 delegates. Otherwise, the delegates are divided proportionally among all candidates with at least 20 percent of the primary vote.
