Opinion: Message clear on budget defeats

Posted on April 27, 2015 |
By Jim Feldhousen

What is the mystery with the Bristol school budgets?

Both Bristol school budgets were voted down twice. The second time had the same budget amounts as the first time. The school boards are having trouble understanding why the second time failed. Hopefully for the next budget re-vote, the proposed budgets will be significantly lower.

Opinion: Education reform bill reduces public participation

Posted on April 27, 2015 |
By Paul Stone

Closing schools and getting rid of school boards. Make no mistake about it, the goal of H.361, passed by the Vermont House and now being considered by the Senate, is about closing elementary schools and getting rid of elementary school boards; about reducing citizen and parent participation in the education of their children; about removing those pesky and annoying things, citizens and parents, from the bureaucrat’s otherwise tranquil life; about giving over to the bureaucrats of the state more power, more control, more money.

Opinion: Support urged for Pathways

Posted on April 23, 2015 |
By Liam Corcoran

Fund the Pathways program at Mount Abraham Union High School. Fully.

Recently I was made aware that the support staff positions in the Pathways program were going to be cut if the budget was passed. The budget has not been passed yet, so I am relieved, but not at ease. The termination of these positions would be doing an unimaginable disservice to the students at Pathways.

Jessie Raymond: Bad tire sensors leave me deflated

Posted on April 23, 2015 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last week, I spent $102 to get my car fixed. Or, more accurately, I spent $102 to replace two faulty tire-pressure sensors that had triggered an ominous-looking amber dashboard light. The light erroneously indicated that one or more of my tires was dangerously low.

My tires were fine.

Perhaps you are familiar with that warning light: It’s a sort of horseshoe shape with the ends pointing up. It’s ripply on the bottom, with an exclamation point in the middle, meaning “Hey, pay attention, this is super important!”

Greg Dennis: Joni Mitchell, a life in song

Posted on April 23, 2015 |
By Greg Dennis

Get ready to say goodbye to Joni Mitchell.

The esteemed singer-songwriter was recently hospitalized after being found unconscious at her Southern California home. She is a survivor of childhood polio, 60 years of smoking, 50 years of fame (she called it “a glamorous misunderstanding”) and Morgellon’s syndrome.

Mitchell may not be long for this world. But she will leave behind a legacy of song that will outlast the century.

Opinion: Students' articles should have been better researched

Posted on April 23, 2015 |
By Peter Grant

Your pullout section, “The Bird’s Eye View,” has articles that need a lot more research before printing.

I hope other students at Mount Abraham Union High School can fill in the gap.

One article was on gun control and it seems the only research done for it was borrowing only from the NRA.

We all know that the NRA is in the business of helping sell guns and is not concerned about deaths caused by them.

Unfortunately, lots of people of different ethnicities in our state of Vermont are racially profiled at least once in their life, creating horrible memories.

Editorial: Visa program is effective way to create jobs in rural Vt.

Posted on April 23, 2015 |

There are few things less understood and less intuitive than the EB-5 program that continues to add the growth essential to the prosperity of Jay Peak and the surrounding environs of Franklin and Orleans counties, as well as projects in Addison County and throughout rural Vermont.

Guest editorial: School consolidation plan less effective if it is voluntary

Posted on April 20, 2015 |
By Emerson Lynn

If the education reform bill passed by the House is what is eventually approved by the Legislature and signed into law by the governor, Vermont will have made some significant progress in the march toward a more efficient, less costly education system. It will also put us in the position of being able to use our resources to improve educational outcomes.
