Opinion: A Comment on the Political Scene

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Lawrence Jones

Once upon a dreary time,

Those who would be president

Tapped the country’s discontent

To make a brand new paradigm.

Two candidates talked policy,

And with each other disagreed.

Though each, of course, wants to succeed,

Neither descends to lunacy.

Six or eight, though, parody

An elementary schoolyard brawl.

Except for two, they all look small,

And most should be in custody!

Opinion: Work remains to be done after encouraging vote for ACSU unity

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Jason Duquette-Hoffman

On the night of the election, as town-by-town results trickled in through the wee hours, it became clear that a profound shift was under way. We have all heard so much this cycle about changing political paradigms, but no one had predicted the way in which this vote would unfold.

Guest Editorial: UVM's 40 percent rule 'is a policy relic that does harm'

Vermont touts itself as a state whose commitment to education has no equal. That is a half-truth.  We do well with grades PreK-12. Nationally, no state’s commitment is our equal.  When it comes to higher education, we fail. Nationally, all states do more to support higher education than does Vermont.

As the economy becomes more dependent on a highly educated workforce, this lack of commitment poses obvious warnings.

Opinion: Important early-age childcare deserves to be funded

As a parent and child care center director, I understand the challenges Vermont parents face in finding high-quality care for their children. We know every child deserves a strong start to life. How many readers remember the old saw that “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”? And isn’t that the truth! Well, a senior United States government official has recently reported that Iran is the greatest supporter of terrorism in the world.

Thanks to the voters who gave me your support in my latest selectboard election run.

I am grateful to have been part of town government during the new town hall and recreation center project that we have waited 50 years for. I intend to continue serving my town in whatever capacity the new board thinks appropriate.

Ripton, Vermont

February 25, 2016

Forty-seven degrees up in the forested hills of Ripton,

Light rain.

A few minutes of distant lightning and thunder.

The ice on the driveway is rotten, melted here and there down to the gravel.

The snow in the woods is virtually gone.

Virtually gone.

While the stream that usually gurgles as it runs near the house

Editorial: Bernie's not-so-bad Tuesday

America, Feel the Bern.

Hillary, certainly, is feeling the heat. Consider that if Sen. Sanders had collected an additional half percentage point in Massachusetts he would have won five primaries to Clinton’s six on a day that heavily favored Clinton’s strongest base of support. But for that half percentage point, the headlines would have been dramatically different.
