Editorial: Great ideas brewing in Middlebury

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

If Middlebury is to grow jobs close to home by attracting new businesses and industry and cultivating telecommuters, as the Better Middlebury Partnership has done in recent months, then the greater-Middlebury community also has to provide a way for the young professionals who are likely to fill these jobs to easily and effectively assimilate into the community.

The rejuvenation of a “young professionals” group is one answer that’s under way.

Clippings by John S. McCright: Just one of 183,000; but a special one

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By John S. McCright

The other day I heard some self-obsessed celebrity on the radio say that if you googled his first name a reference to him turned up on the first page of the Internet search engine’s results. I thought it would be fun to see how high I would come up when I googled my first name. Alas, my first name is not unusual; in fact it is one of the least unusual names in the English language.

Eric Davis: Congres is weighing e-commerce tax

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By Eric Davis

In 1992, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could not collect sales taxes from businesses that do not have physical locations within state borders. With the explosion of e-commerce since 1992, the National Governors Association claims that more than $20 billion in sales tax revenue is going uncollected each year because of tax-free Internet sales. The U.S. Senate is moving toward passage of legislation that would overturn the 1992 Supreme Court ruling, but whether this bill will actually pass both houses of Congress is very much an open question.

Greg Dennis: Making a wish list for spring

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By Gregory Dennis

My current springtime list of things to do starts with this small mountain:

•  Buy electric lawnmower.

•  Mow grass the thickness of dreadlocks.

•  Regret that I didn’t buy a bigger electric lawnmower.

•  Try to remember where I stored my bicycle and summer car tires.

•  Send fly rod for repairs after I jammed it in a car window.

•  Buy new fishing waders to replace the ones that balloon into fat-man pants every time I step into a river.

Editorial: The preferred route for the VGS pipeline

Posted on April 29, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

If Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) wants to built a pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., it must concede two points: 1) the public good of such a route is not a slam dunk and, if push comes to shove, VGS will likely face a legal challenge; 2) the economic benefits of partnering with the towns they want to go through will almost certainly outweigh the negative consequences of waging battle against them.

Editorial: 'It's good to respect the land'

Posted on April 29, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Marci Hayes couldn’t have summed up the meaning of Green Up Day better: “I’m motivated by the idea of taking care of the environment where you live. It’s good practice to respect the land. And it looks better after.”

Guest editorial: Granting farm workers driver's license is the right thing to do, good for farms

Posted on April 25, 2013 |
By Emerson Lynn

The reason Vermont’s dairy industry can get its product to market depends, in no small part, on the labor of an estimated 1,500 undocumented workers. The majority come from the southern region of Mexico, some come from Guatemala and other areas. Together they are a vital part of what makes a difficult life on the farm bearable.

They are also a big part of the reason Ben & Jerry’s can make its ice cream, or our cheese-makers their cheese, or our milk producers the milk that fills our cereal bowls.

Clippings: When in a jam, 'Toasty' delivers

Posted on April 25, 2013 |
By Trent Campbell

My toaster and I haven’t been getting along lately. I don’t know what’s wrong. Toasty just hasn’t been himself. Now, to be clear, I don’t actually call my toaster Toasty in real life. I’m not crazy. It just seems like for the purposes of this column it will be easier if I can refer to my toaster by name. I thought about Bob or James or William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor II, but I am sticking with Toasty.

Jessie Raymond: The waiting game can take its toll

Posted on April 25, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

The other afternoon I found myself standing next to a lovely young woman. She wore a flowing ankle-length skirt and an expression of pure contentment. Her languid movements and placid countenance reflected the soul of a person who has transcended the pressures of daily life and found a space where time has no meaning.

I wanted to kick her in the shins.
