Politically Thinking: Clock ticking for GOP challengers

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Eric L. Davis

While November 2012 seems a long way off, candidates who are serious about challenging Sen. Bernie Sanders and Gov. Peter Shumlin will need to decide soon whether to enter those races. Campaign organizing and fund-raising for one of Vermont’s top-ticket offices now takes a year or more.

Between the Lines: In digital times, local papers will survive

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Gregory Dennis

This thing you are reading may look like a newspaper. But in a sense it’s actually a dinosaur.

Those of us who were brought up on print still love our dino-papers. We will probably continue reading them in varying degrees until the day we die. Indeed, it’s been said that the best hope for the newspaper industry is Americans over 50.

Which means the business in its present form has got maybe another 30 years before it’s the stuff of legend.

No time to tip-toe

Posted on June 2, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Here’s a question to ponder: Can Americans afford to tip-toe gingerly into the future, or are we being flung headfirst into an era of rapid change and the challenge before us is to react as proficiently and studiously as possible to position ourselves for a more secure future?

For better or worse, the latter seems to dictate the times.

• Climate change is upon us and scientists keep shortening the window of opportunity to right the wrongs we’ve done.

Clippings: News on the Web gets too personal

Posted on June 2, 2011 |
By John McCright

My dad and I have a lot in common. We were both born and raised in Iowa by Roman Catholic parents. We both went to college and got post-graduate degrees. We both take pleasure in being fathers, enjoy eating peanut butter, prefer manual transmission cars.

What we don’t have in common is the news we read. And that’s not just because we have easy access to different print newspapers given the fact that he lives in Iowa and I live in Vermont.

Around the bend: Nature's 'villains' should make noise

Posted on June 2, 2011 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last weekend, our 17-year-old nephew stopped by to check out what my husband, Mark, and I were doing in the garden. (Apparently he’s never seen anyone planting potatoes with a post-hole digger, a method we picked up from The New York Times bestseller “Concrete Cornucopia: How to Grow Vegetables in Rock Hard Clay.”)

But the boy never got to the garden because on his way across the lawn, he suddenly yelled, “Snake!” and leaped backward, jumping right out of his shoes. Literally.

Editorial: Ranking 5th in per pupil spending is good news

Posted on May 30, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

No matter how you look at it, the fact that Vermont ranks fifth in the nation in per pupil spending in public schools is good news. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that Vermont spends $15,175 per pupil in public schools compared to the national average of $10,499. At the top of the heap is New York, which spent $18,126 per pupil in 2009. The District of Columbia was second at $16,408; third was New Jersey ($16,271), and Alaska was fourth at $15,552.

Clippings: Stress-o-meter bobs up and down

Posted on May 26, 2011 |
By Trent Campbell

When it comes to stress, I am really moving up in the world. More than 20 years ago I was working for a radiology lab in California as a medical records technician. One day I happened to catch a news report that listed the least stressful jobs in America and medical records technician came in a close second to musical instrument repairman. When I heard the news I felt my blood pressure drop 25 points and watched the life line on the palm of my hand grow by an inch and a half. Kicking stress to the curb had me feeling groovy.

New fire stations needed, but frugality is appreciated

Posted on May 26, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The decision by a town committee, after 17 months of study, to renovate and rebuild the two existing fire stations in Middlebury and East Middlebury has ample merits and deserves the town’s initial support, along with go-ahead plans to firm up any details the public will need to make an informed vote at town meeting next March.
