Gregory Dennis: Why Bernie’s campaign will burn out

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s presidential election season again, and many Vermonters are clearly excited about the upstart candidacy of their own Howard Dean. He’s speaking truth to power and reminding the Democratic Party what it’s supposed to stand for — for working people and not the monied class, for the environment and not the polluters, for a tempered foreign policy and not cowboy aggression.

Eric Davis: Lisman as candidate muddies GOP picture

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Eric Davis

I have recently written several columns arguing that 2016 could be a good year for Vermont Republicans. Lt. Gov. Phil Scott could be a strong candidate for governor, and Republicans could continue making gains in the Legislature, especially the House.

Opinion: Letters showed hope for future

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Samuel Fogel

In the Monday, Aug. 10, issue of your paper, there were letters to the editor that gave me great hope for the future.

One was a serious analysis of the pros and cons of local police acquiring and using Tasers. Another was about a seemingly responsible young woman who accidentally caused the death of a local cyclist, possibly due largely to driving under the influence of alcohol as well as several medications prescribed by a physician (that affect neurological functioning) and the likely relative meager legal consequence for such an offense.

Opinion: State should say no to fracked gas

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Hurlburt

Deceit should not be rewarded with a slap on the hand and a $100,000 fine that will be passed on to rate-paying customers.

Passing escalating costs onto customers should not be an option as ratepayers don’t have endless deep pockets. The ice caps are melting. The world as we know it is rapidly changing. The release of methane gas in the atmosphere through fracking cannot be accepted. This is a sure death wish for the planet.

Opinion: Where have all the young ones gone?

Posted on August 31, 2015 |
By William J. Mathis

In our national dialogue, education reform has been reduced to recitations about “international economic competitiveness” poorly garnished with a myopic sprinkling of test scores. But two recent Vermont reports suggest we embrace a broader and more interactive view of society and education. One is the Vermont Roots Migration Project released last December comparing young people who stayed in the state with those who left. The second is the Department of Labor’s workforce projections.

The key findings of the Vermont Roots report:

Opinion: Vermont Gas credibility on pipeine effectiveness questioned

Posted on August 31, 2015 |
By Ivor Hughes

I am writing in reference to former Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas’ guest editorial July 27. In his editorial, Mr. Douglas laid out all the benefits that the VGS gas transmission pipeline will bring to the towns of Middlebury and Vergennes. Unfortunately, like many other proponents, he skips over the other important part of the equation, which is where is the money coming from to pay for it.
