Ways of Seeing by Claire Corkins: Did cutting tree really benefit town?

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Claire Corkins

Corkins, Claire.jpg

Our silver maple tree was cut down. We didn’t want to cut it down. It wasn’t dying. The choice, however, was taken out of our hands because this particular tree was growing in that thin strip of grass between sidewalk and street. That land you have to mow but the town controls.

The silver maple was old. At least 80 years old according to the memories of my father, who remembers it being there, quite big, when he was a child. I can only tell you about its last 35 years, the time I spent with it.

Jessie Raymond: Taking the plunge — on puff pastry

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

They say you’re never too old to try new things. Maybe that’s why Australian grandmother Irene O’Shea, 102, recently went skydiving to raise money for charity.

While I’m not likely to jump out of a plane — I have to drop to a crouch on tall escalators — O’Shea and I have something in common. I know the sort of thrill she must have felt falling 14,000 feet toward the earth, because this year I too (figuratively at least) have stretched my wings.

Greg Dennis: Baby, it's politically incorrect outside

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

I had to laugh when I read that the Politically Correct Police are upset about the words to “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Can’t we just have a little innocent holiday fun without putting every male-female interaction under a microscope?

Then I took a closer look at the song’s lyrics. And decided that in this case, the word cops do have a point.

Letter to the editor: Plastic bag ban is a good first step

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Amy McAninch

I would like to thank Carol Talmage for her excellent letter (11/29), “Plastic causes apprehension” and say that plastic causes me apprehension too. That is why I am working with a group of volunteers on a plastic bag ban advisory petition in the town of Middlebury.

Letter to the editor: Society blamed for bad behavior

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Bonnie L. Barrows

The public cries out: “Why are kids killing kids today?” Well, let’s take a look at society.

Children are not disciplined and there is a difference between discipline and abuse. Children have access to cellphones and social media sites. Children have access to violent video games. Children have parents who teach them.

So society, where did you go wrong, because guns have been around for centuries. Society is what has changed and gone wrong!

Just my take.

Letter to the editor: Accept and help all the children

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Jason Duquette-Hoffman

My heart is breaking for the child who felt so alone in our community that the only answer they could come to was violence. We need to wrap that child, and every child, in love.

People, we need to do better. As grateful as I am for the advocacy (mostly by our youth) that gave us one of the tools that prevented this tragedy from becoming deadly, I also am desperately aware of how much we need to do to ensure that our youth know that our community knows them, loves them, and cares about them.

Letter to the editor: Kind passersby offered valuable aid in time of need

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Patricia Heather-Lea

Kaphlunk. Kaphlunk. Kaphlunk.

We, my husband John and I, emerged from a daze to realize that sound was coming, with regularity, from our car. That happened on Wednesday evening, Nov. 14, at about 6:30. It was a chilly night. We pulled over on Seymour Street, still within the village of Middlebury.

Guest editorial: Signs of hope — in politics?

Posted on December 17, 2018 |
By Lee H. Hamilton

Call me a contrarian. Or even a Pollyanna. But when everyone around me is filled with gloom and despair, seeing dire portents in every political headline, I try to find trends that encourage me.

And I’m finding them. It could be that my hopes outrun the realities. But I’m guardedly optimistic that’s not the case.
If there’s a single theme that ties them together, it seems to me that many people are beginning to view government with greater realism as to what it can do about improving the quality of life of our people.

Letter to the editor: Town Hall Theater kids' Shakespeare show inspiring

Posted on December 17, 2018 |
By Jane Kimble

The Town Hall Theater’s Education team, namely Courageous Stage’s Lindsay Pontius, Craig Maravich and their wonderful team of artists and educators did an incredible and moving job with about 90 local fifth and sixth graders from four different elementary schools as the kids performed “Henry IV, Part I” last Thursday evening. Congratulations to all involved! I’ve really never seen anything like “Shakespeare: It’s Elementary.”

Letter to the editor: Safe-schools efforts praised; gun discussion needed

Posted on December 17, 2018 |

I read with interest the letter from Ian Ross recently printed in the Dec. 3 issue of your paper.

There is little to disagree with in Ian’s letter. I too have lived in Middlebury all my life and have watched our country change over the years. We no longer live in an insular society. But I have a perspective that can also be of value.
