Letter to the editor: Volunteer, businesswoman backed

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie Jerome when I first moved to Brandon 18 years ago. I had decided to join Neshobe Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization to better acquaint myself with local parents in the community when I encountered Stephanie at one of the monthly meetings. Her warm welcome and dedication to supporting the students, faculty and staff at Neshobe made the decision to become a member very easy.

Poetry: Painting the steeple

Chime’s shroud.

Veil’s net.

Christ’s covering.

Let the chips drop

where they fall.

Inside the steeple’s

dress. And the men

on their scaffolding

no one calls

a cross. Heart-

stopping

and curious,

isn’t it?

This black

mask

meant to hold

the dust

in. To catch

Editorial: If Trump were a Democrat!

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

If Donald Trump were a Democrat and president, can you imagine how outraged Republicans would be? Let’s count the ways:

• Trump took a knee in Helsinki, essentially kowtowing to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and trashing our own intelligence team and, by extension, our armed services. After years of counting Russia as their mortal enemy, Republicans before Trump would have been apoplectic. Even Veteran groups protested Trump’s weakness and defended the truthfulness of America’s press.

Clippings: On writing for myself — and others

Lots of ink has been spilled defending the belief that today’s young people are meaningfully different from the generations that came before them — the idea that smartphones, reality television and campus protest culture have stunted millennials’ growth, and rendered them vain and oversensitive. Count me as one young person who finds that narrative overblown.

Eric Davis: State Dems eyeing veto-proof edge

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

The most consequential elections in Vermont in November could well involve 10 to 15 House seats around the state, which will determine whether Gov. Scott can have vetoes sustained by the Legislature in 2019 and 2020.

Scott is likely to be re-elected. No incumbent governor of Vermont has lost a re-election bid in 56 years. None of the Democratic candidates for governor has the political and electoral experience, fund-raising ability or name recognition to pose a serious challenge to Scott.

Ways of seeing: Hidden in plain sight

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Alice Leeds

A unique community of 10,000-15,000 Vermonters is scattered throughout our state. Its vibrant culture centers around its engaging language. However, this community is often marginalized, misunderstood and forgotten. Its young people can be particularly isolated. Deaf Vermonters, whose contributions help support our state, would benefit from greater acknowledgment and allocation of resources.

Letter to the editor: Medical experts reacted quickly

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Kathleen G. Johnson

This morning I woke up to learn on the internet that a prescription medicine I had been taking for years — valsartan hctz — had been recalled overnight nationwide. I spoke to my pharmacist at Marble Works as soon as they opened, then to my primary care office (Addison Family Medicine) and by mid-afternoon I had my new prescription in hand. And a refund for a recent renewal from the pharmacy for the now banned medicine.

Letter to the editor: Sheriff candidate has experience

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Bill Cunningham

I strongly endorse Peter Newton as the next sheriff of Addison County. Peter currently serves as a lieutenant in the sheriff’s department under the mentorship of Sheriff Keeler. Peter has spent 28 years in public safety, 13 of which were in the emergency medical field, and the last 15 dedicated to law enforcement.

Letter to the editor: We rob children of precious time

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Julie Parker

When I look out over the rolling blue hills and distant skyline it is hard to feel anything is amiss in Vermont. Yet Gov. Shumlin was one of the first to admit that this small state has a serious opiate crisis. Something is amiss. And Vermont has company in 49 sister states. Here is my take on what may be contributing factors.

Our children have been fleeced. We have stolen all their presents, and along with this burglary the fun they could have had playing, exploring, dreaming with them, even squandering them, tiring of them, then throwing them away.
