Editorial: How to do something 'remarkably cool' — the next steps for Mount Abe

Posted on March 8, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

“We’re at the edge of an incredible opportunity to do something remarkably cool.”

That’s a quote from Bristol resident David Brynn in a story in today’s issue about the third defeat of a bond to renovate the Mount Abe middle and high school facility (see Page 1A.). What’s unique about his comment is that it looks at a defeated bond issue as an opportunity to do great things.

Jessie Raymond: Don't have what it takes, and that's fine

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

Last week I saw an article claiming that, in living rooms all around the country, viewers were watching Olympic performances and saying to themselves, “I think I could do that.”

Really? I didn’t even feel that way when the games cut to a commercial for mopping.

I do stand in awe of the Olympic athletes, but I’ve never felt that I could be one. When a future Olympian is 8 or 9, their parents, recognizing the child’s potential, pack up the family, move to Colorado and build a regulation ski jump in the back yard.

Letter to the editor: Cut to MUMS librarian post fails to meet Vt. standards

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Barbara Karle

I have had the privilege to be part of Middlebury Union Middle School for many years, first as a science teacher and now as the school library media specialist. The faculty and staff are hard-working professionals who serve our students well. For years MUMS has had a reputation as one of the best middle schools in the state.

Letter to the editor: Right to vote is precious — all should exercise it

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Denise Dalton

As we approach Town Meeting Day, I reflect on our country’s history, the evolution of citizenship, and our right to vote. We are faced with many issues today, locally and as a nation, to which my eyes have been opened. I know I am not alone in this currently tumultuous environment.

Letter to the editor: Gun deaths a public health issue

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Sally Kerschner

The tragic massacre in Florida and Vermont’s own “near miss” in Fair Haven emphasizes that we continue to be caught up in an epidemic of gun violence. Over 33.000 people die in firearm related incidences in the US annually. In Vermont, 420 people died from gun-related violence in the period of 2011-2016, with many being the result of domestic violence and suicide. And yet, the same pattern repeats every time a tragedy occurs: Groups retreat to tired talking points that are created and promoted by vested interests.

Letter to the editor: Unification hasn't helped school

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Caetlin Harwood

As a parent of three children under the age of eight, I have many years ahead of me in the public-school system, and consider myself fortunate to be able to send my kids to the same small community school that I went to at their age. As an Addison resident my whole life, community is of the utmost importance to me, and in such a rural town, our school is the center of that community. There’s nothing better in my opinion than watching my kids walk into school each day, knowing their needs will be met by people I know on a first-name basis and trust explicitly.

Letter to the editor: Rescue providers offer invaluable service to towns

Our voluntary ambulance service is terrific and I want to thank them publicly for all their service. They have transported me to Porter many times when I have had cellulitis.

Letter to the editor: Accessibility vital to Mount Abe plan

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Krista Siringo

I would like to respond to the question posed by Angelo Lynn in a recent editorial regarding the upcoming bond vote for proposed renovations to Mount Abraham: would the renovation ever yield an outstanding result?

In every survey of students and faculty, there has been a consistent, urgent call for improvements to Mt. Abe. This call has been echoed by most members of our community. As Superintendent Reen has said, most of us agree that renovations are sorely needed.

A 256-year-old Vermont tradition at risk?

Posted on March 5, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s iconic Town Meeting Day tradition, which has been ongoing for the past 256 years, dies without your attendance and vote.

That’s not overstating the consequence in future years, if Vermont residents choose to forego the civic duty that generations of Vermonters have long held sacred. That duty includes reading up on a resident’s town and school budgets, being familiar with special articles and bond votes, and knowing the candidates running for office well enough to make an intelligent choice.

Ways of Seeing: Historical perspectives on migration

Posted on March 1, 2018 |
By Mary Mendoza

Mendoza , Mary -ways of seeing.jpg

In preparation for a manuscript workshop this week, I read a draft of a book about Texas history by a woman named Sarah Rodriguez. I am a historian of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands (and a Texan by birth), so my friend and colleague asked if I would attend a workshop to give my comments on her book before she published it. I was happy to oblige.
