Ways of Seeing: Our nation as cancer — please help

Posted on June 8, 2017 |
By Joanna Colwell

On the second Saturday in June, a gathering will take place in New York City called “NYC Loves Muslims.” This is a response to a hateful “Anti-Sharia” rally that is being planned for that same day in New York. Apparently there are a number of these racist and Islamaphobic gatherings planned around the country on that day.

Between the Lines: A day of hiking with 'Superman'

Posted on June 8, 2017 |
By Gregory Dennis

I met Superman in New Haven last fall.

At the time I didn’t realize that Alberto Schiavon was Superman. I thought he was just a fit and articulate Italian, in town to talk about his family’s small hotel in the Dolomites.

Gregg and Caroline Marston, the New Haven residents who for many years owned VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations, introduced me to Alberto at a wine-and-cheese event for friends of VBT.

Posted on June 8, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the tenth in a series of essays by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought.

To begin to understand Machiavelli (1469–1527), one must try to imagine what life was like in Italy during his lifetime.

Community Forum, Bill McKibben: Trump choice fails civilization

Posted on June 5, 2017 |
By Bill McKibben

People say, if all you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail. We should be so lucky. President Trump has a hammer, but all he’ll use it for is to smash things that others have built, as the world looks on in wonder and in fear. The latest, most troubling example is his decision to obliterate the Paris climate accord: After nearly 200 years of scientific inquiry and over 20 years of patient diplomacy that united every nation save Syria and Nicaragua, we had last Thursday afternoon’s big game-show Rose Garden reveal: Count us out.

Note of Appreciation: Marquis Theater owner is an asset to Addison County

By Margie Bekoff and Chip Mayer and Bethany Menkart

The Middlebury community is strengthened by the presence of the Marquis Theater, and owner Ben Wells.

Our Middlebury Huddle, formed in the wake of the Women’s March on Washington in January 2017, meets to discuss political and social events and to organize opportunities for educating ourselves and the general public about current events.

Letters to the Editor: Brandon's choice reaffirmed Constitutional principle

Posted on June 5, 2017 |
By Katie Burghardt Kramer

I applaud the town of Brandon for revising the plans for the upcoming Brandon Carnival to eliminate the Christian worship portion of the event, following objections from community members, including myself.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits governmental endorsement of religion and requires separation of church and state. In my view, the inclusion of Christian religion in a government-sponsored event is a breach of those bedrock principles of American democracy.

Editorial: Is defense the political strategy of Gov. Phil Scott

Posted on June 1, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As Vermont’s Legislature and Gov. Scott’s administration maneuver toward a veto session on June 21-22, Vermonters will soon have a keener insight into their newly elected governor’s political skills and instincts.

Until his veto of the budget, which is tied to his last-minute move to impose a statewide teacher contract for health care benefits, Gov. Scott had taken a passive role in shaping legislation -— preferring, it seemed, to let Democrats take the lead on new initiatives.
