Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Jeanne Montross

On behalf of all the people in our community who are food insecure, THANK YOU to our local Letter Carriers Association for their tireless efforts to organize this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Joe Laramie and Victoria Gragg led an amazing effort this year that resulted in 1,819 pounds of food coming into HOPE’s food shelf.

Editorial: The hardship is already here; now, what will Middlebury do?

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

With the recent news of two more businesses closing in Middlebury’s downtown, in the immediate vicinity of the construction zone, when is it time to recognize that the hardship that had been predicted is real and must be addressed before more businesses close? There are, after all, two and a half more years of intense construction still to go.

Editorial: Gov. Scott's vetoes vs. leadership

Posted on May 24, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The standoff between Gov. Phil Scott and the Vermont Legislature is seemingly over Scott’s campaign pledge not to pass any legislation that would raise more taxes. As a political sound-byte, that’s about as safe a proposition and campaign pledge any politician could make. But if maintaining a pledge to not raise taxes also means the governor will do nothing to address fundamental problems facing the state, is that the kind of leadership that helps or hurts?

Letter to the editor: Teachers don't need coaches, they need more teachers

Posted on May 21, 2018 |
By Michele Lowy

I was hired at Bristol Elementary School in the spring of 2012, when I moved to Vermont, to be the literacy support teacher for grades 3 through 6. I had taught grades 2 through 8, mostly reading, writing, social studies and science, for over 20 years.

Letter to the editor: Don't shortchange teachers to pay off the wealthy

Posted on May 21, 2018 |
By Bob Zeliff

I don’t know anyone who likes to pay taxes. Most of us would like to see our taxes reduced.

At the same time, Vermonters have long wanted and consistently voted for the best schools for their kids. By our State Constitution this means equal education for all Vermont students. We don’t have a few great schools with many cheap but poor-quality schools like many states.

Letter to the editor: Many helped Leicester Green Up

Posted on May 21, 2018 |
By Kate Briggs and Diane Benware

We would like to thank all the people who turned out this year to make Green Up so successful. When the snow finally melted, the roadsides looked ghastly! It didn’t seem like we could get it all done.  Volunteers from Salisbury, Leicester, and Brandon crossed town and county lines to make sure Route 53 was covered for its entire length.

Guest editorial: The Vermont Senate's most shameful vote

Posted on May 21, 2018 |
By Stephen C. Terry

In the closing hours of the 2018 Legislative session on Saturday night, May 12, the Vermont Senate cast one of the most shameful votes I can ever recall in its decision to reject Karen O’Neill, Gov. Phil Scott’s nominee for the Vermont Labor Relations Board.

Eric Davis: Possible senate primary adds spice

Posted on May 17, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

Sen. Claire Ayer’s decision not to run for another term in the Vermont Legislature has produced a rare occurrence in the Addison Senate district, consisting of all the Addison County towns, plus Huntington and Buel’s Gore in Chittenden County.

For the first time in many years, there will be an open Senate seat in the Addison District, that is known to be open well before the deadline for candidates to file petitions to be on the ballot. This year, that deadline is Thursday, May 31.
