Editorial: An Election Day primer

Posted on November 5, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Tomorrow is Election Day. In Vermont’s two-year election cycle, every office is up for grabs. As is typical, there will be several names on the ballot many voters will not be familiar with. That’s OK, don’t panic, and above all, don’t NOT vote.

If you’re feeling unprepared, here’s a quick guide before you step into the voting booth, along with some pointers from which to base your vote:

Opinion: Act 46 offers an opportunity to prioritize, think differently

Posted on November 5, 2018 |
By Sheila Soule

For some, the dialogue around what to do about our declining enrollment is limited to which school we should close. I would argue that is the wrong conversation for us to have. Foremost, that begins the conversation with an adversarial stance where we create winners and losers. In that scenario, our focus remains on what we don’t want and most of our energy is placed on reacting to or even preventing the change idea.

Letter to the editor: Orwell urged to back Act 46 merger

Posted on November 5, 2018 |
By Alyson Eastman

As a taxpayer and citizen of Orwell, I’m writing to share my reasoning for supporting the district voting YES to accept Orwell into the Slate Valley Unified Union School District.

I am thankful we live in a town that is extremely passionate about our school, children and community as a whole. Yet, it’s important that there is balance behind that passion. I’m extremely concerned about the tax rate if we don’t merge; there is not a lowering of taxes in sight if Orwell goes at this alone.

Editorial: Zuckerman for Lt. Governor

Posted on November 1, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

There are some things on which we feel Lt. Gov. David Zuckerman is too progressive, but those are by matter of degrees, not of policy.

He’s a strong advocate for measures that will make the lives of lower- and middle-class Vermonters stronger and healthier — a livable wage, health care for all, net neutrality, reducing the wage gap and affordable housing. He’s an organic farmer who understands the pressures facing farmers across the state and the need for smaller farms to diversify.

Editorial: Vote for a 'can-do' governor

Posted on November 1, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

If Vermonters want a governor who will work collaboratively with the Legislature to develop effective legislation, rather than rule by veto, they won’t get it from Gov. Phil Scott.

If Vermonters want a governor to champion a livable wage or clean up the state’s waters, they won’t get that from Phil, either.

And if Vermonters want a governor who will lead the state against climate change and implement universal broadband, Phil’s not their man.

Eric Davis: Questions to be answered Tuesday

Posted on November 1, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

Here are some questions to consider as election results come in next Tuesday night.

Polls indicate considerably more interest in this year’s midterms than in typical off-year cycles. National turnout in the last midterms, in 2014, was only 36.6 percent. This year’s turnout will be higher than that. But how much higher?

Posted on November 1, 2018 |
By Selectman Farhad Khan and family

Our family and the Islamic community of Vermont is outraged and horrified, and deeply saddened by the hateful shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Penn.

We offer our condolences for the innocent lives taken and stand in full support and in solidarity with the Jewish community of Pittsburgh, here in Middlebury and elsewhere.
