Letter to the Editor: Keep Vermont roadsides clean; keep bottle deposit law

Posted on November 16, 2017 |
By Mary Lu Harding

The beverage industry is pushing hard to repeal Vermont’s Bottle Bill, which provides for the redemption of soda, beer, liquor, coolers and malt bottles. That may be in their interest, but it’s certainly not in ours.

Editorial: Asian tour, climate denial, Roy Moore, tax cuts for wealthy define Trump’s vision of America

Posted on November 16, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

A year into his presidency, Trump made his first tour to Asian countries to test his macho and try to win leaders over with his old-boy charisma. He underwhelmed — was played for a fool in China and seen acting weakly subservient to Chinese President Xi Jinping, elevated the ruthless dictatorship of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, bailed on a meeting with the South Korean president at the DMZ and kowtowed to Russian president Vladimir Putin so obsequiously that cartoonists had a field day portraying Trump as Putin’s lap dog.

Thank you the Independent for its Oct. 9 editorial, “360,000 reasons high school grads need higher education,” and for its excellent suggestions for resources to get started (such as VSAC, vsac.org).

Letter to the Editor: ANESU voters should not remain on the sidelines

Posted on November 13, 2017 |
By Denise Dalton

The vote to apply significant funds to our middle/high school missed by a narrow margin. A mere one third of voters registered in the district chose to make their voices heard by casting ballots. The conversations begun around this project must continue. We all need to come to the table for civil, thoughtful discourse, whether we are a proponent or an opponent of a major renovation.

Letters to the Editor: Day of big vote wrong in editorial

Posted on November 13, 2017 |
By Bob Stetson

In a touch of irony, Angelo Lynn, on Monday, Nov. 6, wrote about sending out his reporters to strive for accuracy for what they publish.  Yet on his editorial on November 2, 2017 he wrote a good editorial about the bond vote for Mount Abe and why it should be supported but published it on the day of the vote.  He went on to say the vote would  be held on Tuesday, Nov 7. Who checks the chief?

Posted on November 13, 2017 |
By Rebecca Stude

The Have a Heart Food Shelf in Bristol is very grateful to the 5 town  firefighters and the ANESU teachers for another successful food drive.

Over 5,650 pounds of food was collected and donations totaling $1,300. The shelves are full and we ready for winter and the upcoming holidays!

Thank you to all who donated food, time and money to help our neighbors in need.

Thank you.

Rebecca Stude, Director HAHFS, Bristol

Editorial: Mount Abe vote a mixed message, cautionary tale

Posted on November 13, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On Thursday, Nov. 2, not Tuesday, Nov. 7 as I erroneously wrote in a prior editorial, Mount Abraham voters rejected a $36.6 million bond to extensively renovate the high school by a 93-vote margin, 1,261 to 1,168. The question now, according to school officials and members of the renovation committee, is not “what next” — but when should the next vote be and for how much.

Jessie Raymond: Cupholder, engine, wheels ... check

Posted on November 9, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

“Do you drive a lot?” he asked.

“About four miles a day,” I said.

“Great! Well, this model has cruise control, so that’ll come in handy.”

I sighed.

I hate car shopping.

That was two weeks ago, and in the end, I drove away from the lot in a new (used) car. I forget which kind.
