RICHARD KARL STOWE

BURLINGTON — Richard Karl Stowe died in Burlington Monday, July 17, 2017, after a long illness. He was a longtime resident of Hinesburg.

Richard was born in Burlington on December 20, 1929, to Karl and Vera (Darling) Stowe. He graduated from Burlington High School. He worked for the telephone company for fifteen years and later at IBM for more than 25 years.

ELLEN JANE (HALLOCK) STEADY

VERGENNES — Ellen Steady passed away on July 8, 2017, in her home surrounded by her family at the age of 88. Ellen was a strong, hardworking and loving woman and matriarch of her family. Ellen cherished all of her family and that is evident in her collection of countless photos and various albums she kept of her family throughout the years.

FREDRICK SAMUEL NEW

SUDBURY — Fredrick Samuel New, age 86, of Sudbury, Vt., passed away on Thursday evening the July 13, 2017 at his home in Sudbury. Born August 18, 1930, he is a son of the late Leon V. and Eleanor Elisabeth (Gillis) New.

RUTH (NORTON) READY

BURLINGTON — Ruth (Norton) Ready, 96, long-time Burlington resident passed away peacefully with her family by her side Tuesday night, July 11, 2017, at the Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury. She was born in Fall River, Mass., on June 11, 1921, the daughter of Thomas J. and Elizabeth (Mahoney) Norton.

ELIZABETH (CLODGO) LAFOY

VERGENNES — Elizabeth (Clodgo) LaFoy, 79, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Ringer Home Care in Vergennes.

She was born August 1, 1937, in Rutland, the daughter of Alfred and Blanche (Ringer) Clodgo.

She is survived by her children and spouses Jay LaFoy (Jennifer), Nancy Larrow (Jim), Suzanne Hurley (Robert) and daughter-in-law Donna LaFoy.

She was predeceased by the love of her life, Jerry LaFoy, November 9, 2000.

MARIO GIANNONE

MIDDLEBURY — Mario George Giannone, 93, died Sunday, July 2, 2017, at his home in Cortez, Colorado. 

He was born in Middlebury, Vt., on May 26, 1924, the son of Carrado Giannone and Eliza A. (Vittone) Giannone. 

Mario was orphaned at the age of 4. He spent 5 years in St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Burlington, Vt., and 4 years in Kurn Hattin Homes for Children in Westminster, Vt.

PATRICIA ARLENE AUSTIN

VERGENNES — Patricia Arlene Austin, 89, of South Maple Street, Vergennes, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at her home.

Patricia (or “Pat,” “Mom” or “Mimi” as she was known to her friends and family) was born on February 8, 1928, in Middlebury, Vt., daughter of the late Kenneth and Rena (Whittemore) Murray of East Middlebury, VT. She attended Middlebury schools and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes.

Theresa Orvis Memorial Service

MIDDLEBURY/BRISTOL/VERGENNES — A memorial service to celebrate the life of Theresa Orvis will be held on Saturday, July 15, at 10 a.m., at St. Stephen’s Episcoal Church in Middlebury, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. After the service and burial a luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. at the Vergennes American Legion. 

DIANE MCLEAN-MEACHAM

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Diane McLean-Meacham, 68, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017 at her home in Gansevoort, N.Y.

She was born March 29, 1949 in Berkshire the daughter of Harold and Ellen (Derosia) Pelkey.

Diane was first and foremost a devoted Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She truly loved time spent with family, whether in person or on the phone. A visit from or a talk to “Nana” was always a highlight for “her kids.”

DAVID ADELBERT SWEET

MIDDLEBURY — David Adelbert Sweet, 64, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington after a brief illness.

David was born in North Ferrisburgh, on February 22, 1953. He was the son of Edith Sweet. He was a graduate of Vergennes Union High School in 1971. He worked for many years at the Yankee Kingdom Orchards in Addison. He later worked with Country Home Products in Vergennes. David enjoyed hunting, fishing and cars.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
