Sister Martha Ann O’Brien notice of passing

BURLINGTON — Sister Martha Ann O’Brien, RSM (Sister Mary Alice), 89, of the Sisters of Mercy, died in Burlington, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018. Born in Burlington on Jan. 10, 1929, Sr. Martha entered the Sisters of Mercy on Feb. 2, 1946, and was professed on Aug. 19, 1948. She taught at St. Mary’s School in Middlebury, as well as schools in Barre and Burlington. Her funeral was held on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Mt. St. Mary Convent in Burlington.

Reynald L. Godard

ADDISON — Reynald L. Godard passed away Oct. 17, 2018, at Ringer’s Residential Care Home. He was born Sept. 2, 1934, in Crysler, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Alcide M. Godard and Marie-Rose (Charlebois) Godard.

He married his sweetheart Anita Charlebois on Sept. 3, 1955. Anita passed away March 2, 2005.

He retired from Edlund Co. in 1999.

Sister Virginia Cain notice of passing

WINOOSKI — Sister Virginia Cain, RSM (Sister Mary Virginia), 90, of the Sisters of Mercy, died at Our Lady of Providence Residence in Winooski, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018. Born on Aug. 11, 1928, in Burlington, Sr. Virginia entered the Sisters of Mercy on Aug. 15, 1946, and professed her vows on Aug. 25, 1949. She taught at St. Mary’s School in Middlebury, as well as schools in Burlington, Montpelier, and Barre. Her funeral was held on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Mt. St. Mary Convent in Burlington.

Janice Elaine Harrington

MIDDLEBURY — Janice Elaine Harrington was born on July 20, 1939 in Claremont, N.H., and died on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, in Middlebury, Vt., at the age of 79. The daughter of Harry and Claire (Raymond) Blish, Janice attended Stevens High School in Claremont, N.H. and then attended Arizona State University. She married the love of her life Donald Harrington in 1957. They had five children together.

Mary E. ‘Molly’ Cherouny, 79, Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Mary E. “Molly” Cherouny, age 79, died peacefully with family by her side on October 16, 2018, at Eastview in Middlebury, Vt. She had Alzheimer’s Disease.

Molly was a teacher’s aide in Canton, Conn., and more recently a volunteer at Porter Hospital, The Round Robin and The Sheldon Museum in Middlebury.

Alden Fred Atwood

ORWELL — Alden Fred Atwood of Orwell, past Master of the Masonic Independence Lodge 10, passed on to meet the Grand Master of the Universe on Friday, Oct. 12, 2018. He was 97. Born at home in Sabattus, Maine, Feb. 26, 1921, he was raised on a farm in Boltonville, Vt.

Alton G. Woody

PANTON — Alton G. Woody passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 7, in Panton, Vt., at the age of 87 of a heart attack. He was born to Allie (Johnson) Woody and Wade Woody in Lindsay, Calif. Alton was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (now Carnegie Tech) in Pittsburgh, Pa., with a bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering.

Rev. Louise H Drake, 95, Weybridge

WEYBRIDGE — Louise H. Drake passed away peacefully on Oct. 7, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Louise was born in Bristol, Conn., on June 15, 1923, the daughter of Waldo and Jennie Higgins.

James Leo Zutell memorial service

SUDBURY — A memorial service in celebration of the life of James Leo Zutell, age 61, who died Sept. 3, 2018, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, at noon, at the Brandon American Legion.

Following the ceremony the family will receive friends for a time of remembrance.

A private graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date in Pine Hill Cemetery.◊

Martha Jane Sullivan

SALISBURY — Martha Jane Sullivan, 79, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

Ms. Sullivan was born in Middlebury on Aug. 8, 1939, to her parents Harry and Lois (Kelsey) Sullivan. Martha grew up on the family farm in Salisbury, received her early education in Salisbury, and graduated from Middlebury High School.

She earned her B.S. at the University of Wyoming and spent several years teaching in that state and Milwaukee, Wis., before returning to Vermont.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
