NADINE HANSON

MONKTON — Nadine (Shattuck) Hanson, 83, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Mary Bingham’s Home in Bristol with her loving family by her side.

She was born July 10, 1929, in Burlington, the daughter of Fay and Maude (Wright) Shattuck.

GENA PRIME

BRISTOL — Gena Elizabeth Prime, 87, died Tuesday Dec. 4, 2012, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

She was born July 9, 1925, in Bristol, the daughter of Arthur and Alice Shepard Prime.

She retired from Uni Royal Manufacturing in Bristol, Conn. She volunteered at several nursing homes in the surrounding area in Connecticut during her retirement years. Her family says she enjoyed driving her red sports car.

GREGORY S. CLARK

VERGENNES — Gregory S. Clark, 65, passed away Friday, November 30, 2012, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born July 19, 1947, in Burlington, the son of Allen and Shirley (Haven) Clark.

He was a teacher at Mt. Abraham Union High School and served five terms in the Vermont Legislature. Also, he was a member of the Vergennes Congregational Church, Dorchester Lodge #1 F&AM in Vergennes, and Addison County Eagles Club in Vergennes.

KEVIN HURLEY

MIDDLEBURY — Kevin C. Hurley, 50, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, after a short illness.

Born in Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 14, 1962, he was the son of Patricia Shilleh (Blamey) and the late Curtis Hurley. Kevin was the eldest of four children and was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from St. Xavier High School and then attended Johns Hopkins University where he received his BA in international relations. He went on to earn his MA from Lancaster University, England.

BELLE NAGEL

MIDDLEBURY — Belle Nagel died peacefully on Dec. 1, 2012, in Middlebury at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Chip and Jack Mayer. She was 93 years old.

Belle was born May 2, 1919, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. She was the fourth of five children. Her singing talent was apparent early on. At the age of 6 she was chosen to sing popular songs of the era on “The Children’s Hour” on WMBQ radio.

STEVEN SABOURIN

ORWELL — Steven Michael Sabourin, 60, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, following a long illness, at his home in Orwell.

He was born in Middlebury on Aug. 20, 1952. He was the son of Edward and Joyce (Jennings) Sabourin. He was a graduate of Otter Valley Union High School, class of 1970, where he played baseball for three years and was southpaw pitcher.

GLENNA SCOTT

PORT HENRY, N.Y. — Glenna D. Scott, 64, died Monday, December 3, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt., following a long illness.

Born July 13, 1948, in Plymouth, MA, she was the daughter of the late Aurel and Elizabeth (Kimball) Desautels.

Glenna had previously lived in Port Charlotte, FL and Middlebury, VT. She moved to Port Henry in 2001.

VIRGINIA SHAHAN

MIDDLEBURY — Virginia M. Shahan, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Leicester.

She was born in Kirksville, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1921. She was the daughter of Owen and Irene (Ford) James. She received a scholarship from Kirksville State Teachers College, where she earned her teacher’s certificate and taught for several years before moving to Middlebury in 1958.

DAWN STEVENS

BRANDON — Dawn M. Stevens, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Born in Middlebury September 2, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Harold M. and Evelyn E. (Coursey) Stevens. 

Dawn was a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1954, a homemaker and had been initially employed by Chittenden Trust and later Chittenden Bank. She retired in 1991.

KATHERINE TEETOR

MIDDLEBURY — Katherine Schindler Teetor departed this life on November 29, 2012, at Eastview of Middlebury, a retirement community. After a series of small strokes, she fell into a deep sleep and slipped away peacefully with her children at her side.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
