William Rader

SHOREHAM — William “Bill” Rader, 93, died peacefully on April 13, 2010, at his home in Shoreham after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

There will be no public service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753, or American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) Vermont Chapter, 1 South Prospect St., Burlington, VT 05401.

John Thompson

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. John Stephen Thompson, 86, died April 12, 2010, at The Lodge at Otter Creek in Middlebury following a brief period of hospice care.

A memorial service was held Thursday, April 15, at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury. The family asks that instead of flowers a donation be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice Services.

Roger Bird

FOREST DALE — Roger Frederick Bird, 84, died peacefully at his home Thursday morning, April 8, 2010, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

It was his wish to have a private memorial service. Interment will be at the Forest Dale Cemetery.

Burt Knopp

MIDDLEBURY — Burt Knopp, a resident of Shoreham and then Middlebury since 1979, died Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 93 after breaking his hip.

A memorial service will be held later this spring.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., in 1916, the youngest of four children, he graduated from Temple University after working his way through college. He married Fay Honey Irving in 1941, and they were married just five days short of 55 years until her death in 1995.

Raymond McEvoy

BRIDPORT — Raymond A. McEvoy, 74, died unexpectedly Monday, April 5, 2010, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 12, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 504, Middlebury, VT 05753.

He was born Oct. 6, 1935, in Watertown, N.Y., the son of Howard and LuLu Whalen McEvoy.

Richard Ullom

ORWELL — Richard Bolivar Ullom, 72, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at his home in Orwell.

A memorial service, “In Celebration of His Life,” is being planned towards the end of May 2010. A date and time will be announced later.

Memorial gifts may be made to The Volunteers at Porter Hospital, 115 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Mr. Ullom was born in Dover, Ohio, on July 24, 1937. He was the son of Claude and Deretha (Bolivar) Ullom.

Dewitt Bradbury

BRANDON — Dewitt Clinton “Brad” Bradbury Jr., 74, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at his home in Brandon.

Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz conducted a vigil service Monday, April 5, at 7:45 p.m., followed by members of the Brandon Fire Department, who officiated at the “Final Bell” ceremony.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, April 8, at St. Michael’s Church in Union, N.J. Burial with military honors will follow in Hollywood Memorial Cemetery in Union, N.J.

Edith Carpenter

ADDISON — On the evening of March 19, 2010, Edith Carpenter, 92, of Addison ended her earthly journey and joined her Lord and Savior in heaven.Her passing was peaceful and gentle surrounded by the compassionate staff at Helen Porter Comfort Care in Middlebury.

A celebration of this wonderful life will be held at the Addison Baptist Church on April 17 at 1 p.m., followed by a reception in the church hall. A burial will take place at a later time at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol.

Paul Cousino

BRISTOL — Paul Henry Cousino, 89, died April 1, 2010, at Starr Farm Nursing Center following a long illness.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated  Wednesday, April 7, by the Rev. Pierre Lavallee. Burial followed at Mount St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ambrose Caring Community.

He was born on March 15, 1921, in Monkton, the second child of Felix and Delia (Provoncha) Cousino. He spent his childhood on the family farm in Bristol.

Augustus Dowdy

VASSALBORO, Maine — The Rev. Dr. Augustus Wilmont “Wil” Dowdy Jr., 74, died Saturday, April 3, 2010, following a brief illness.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 7, at the Vassalboro United Methodist Church.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
