JOAN THOMSON

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Joan T. Thomson, 86, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at the Masonic Home, St. Petersburg, Fla., following a period of failing health.

Born in Vergennes, Vt., Dec. 10, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Fletcher and Lillian (Stone) Taylor.

HEIDI BROUSSEAU

ADDISON — Heidi Della Brousseau passed away unexpectedly as a result of a single-car accident in Addison on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

She was born in Middlebury, on Dec. 10, 1958, to Robert C. Brousseau and Joyce (Jones) Brousseau.

ANN HENNESSEY

MIDDLEBURY — Ann Klinger Hennessey, who died March 1, 2013, at her home in Middlebury at the age of 79, will be remembered in a memorial service on Saturday, April 27.

The celebration of her life in music and verse will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society with Barnaby Feder as minister. The society is located in Middlebury off Charles Avenue at Duane Court.

SHIRLEY KARNES

MIDDLEBURY — Shirley Ruth Richmond Karnes passed away peacefully at her home in Middlebury on Sunday morning, April 14.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Robert and Anna (Schonzeit) Richmond, as a young woman she studied voice and sang in recitals as a mezzosoprano with dreams of becoming a professional singer. Opera was her great love and she attended performances at the old and new Metropolitan Opera houses, later instilling a love of classical music in her children and grandchildren.

GUILFORD "GIL" KUPFER

LEICESTER — Guilford “Gil” Louis Kupfer, 86, died Friday, April 12, 2013, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born in Forest Dale on Dec. 30, 1926. He grew up in Forest Dale and Brandon where he received his early education. He graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1944. He afterwards served in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 he returned home and worked for the town of Brandon on the highway crew.

A. JOSHUA SHERMAN

ADDISON — A. Joshua Sherman, foundation trustee, consultant and author, died on Saturday, April 6, 2013. He was 78 years old. Mr. Sherman was born in Jerusalem in 1934, came to the United States as a child, and was educated in New York City public schools, the Jewish Theological Seminary College of Jewish Studies, and Columbia College, from which he graduated with honors in 1954. He received doctorates from Harvard Law School and Oxford University, and a master’s in clinical social work from Yeshiva University.

MARY WILLIAMSON

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Williamson, 94, a Middlebury resident since 1988 and a recent resident of the Lodge at Otter Creek, died early in the morning of April 10 at Porter Hospital after a bout of pneumonia.

She was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on September 27, 1918, the only child of Burdett and Jesse (Rich) Arms. She was raised in Farmington, Maine. In 1940 she graduated from the University of Vermont where she was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. After college she moved to Boston where she attended Burdett Business School.

PATRICIA HOWLAND

CENTER RUTLAND — Patricia (Foley) Benard Howland, 76, of Center Rutland died Sunday morning, March 24, 2013, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Leicester, Feb. 10, 1937, the daughter of Donald and Lena (Narrow) Foley.

She was a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1954.

She was married to Richard D. Benard, who died April 11, 2007; she later married Gerald Howland.

ALFRED RUBIO

SOMERVILLE, Mass./LEICESTER, Vt. — Alfred M. Rubio, 95, of Somerville, Mass., and Leicester, Vt., passed away April 7, 2013, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Middlebury, Vt.

Born in Cuba, he emigrated at age two to the United States with his American mother and Cuban father. He lived most of his adult life in Chicago, Ill., and was a World War II veteran (U.S. Navy, Pacific theater).

PATRICIA DANYOW

ADDISON — Patricia Drouin Danyow, 81, died  on April 2, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at Helen Porter Healthcare in Middlebury, Vt.

She was born on June 3, 1931, in Laconia, N.H., to Blynn and Edna Drouin. Patricia graduated from Laconia High School. On Jan. 13, 1951, she married Arthur E. Danyow Jr. and moved to Vermont where they ran a farm and raised a family in Ferrisburgh, then Addison.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
