NEW HAVEN — Jerome C. Smiley of New Haven died on Friday, Oct. 19, at his home, in the care of his loving wife, Susan Higgins Smiley, following a long illness and a courageous battle to regain his health and wellbeing.

CHESTER WATTERS

 

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — Chester Watters, 87, of Sun City Center, Fla., and a former resident of Brandon, passed away on Oct. 17, 2012. He was born on Nov. 3, 1924, in Brandon. He was the son of Euclid S. and Ruth (Churchill) Watters.

RICHARD FITZGERALD

BENSON — Richard Francis Fitzgerald Jr., 44, of Benson died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born in Middlebury on Nov. 9, 1967, the son of Richard F. and Louise V. (Euber) Fitzgerald Sr. He was raised in Middlebury and received all of his schooling there. His family says he had a great love for people and enjoyed story telling. He loved animals, wolves and horses, and had an amazing Matchbox car collection.

PATRICIA FORBES

MIDDLEBURY — Patricia F. Forbes, 76, of Middlebury died on Oct. 11, 2012, at home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice, following a long illness.

Patricia was born on July 25, 1936, in Brandon, the daughter of the late Francis and Grace Fassett. On Dec. 1, 1962, she married Stuart Craig Forbes. Stuart died on Sept. 5, 2006. For the majority of her life Patricia served her family as a homemaker and she enjoyed couponing, shopping, gardening and spending time with her children and great-grandchildren.

FLORENCE HUTCHINSON

 

BRISTOL — Florence J. Hutchinson, 74, passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at her home in Bristol surrounded by her family.

She was born April 18, 1938, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of George and Francelia (Wells) Bessette.

She worked at Kountry Kupboard Restaurant in Bristol for several years. Also, she worked at Bristol House and she did individual home care. Her hobbies were reading, crocheting, flower gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and taking care of her husband.

NEW HAVEN — Milo L. Schaefer III, of New Haven died on Sunday, Oct. 14, in the loving arms of his wife, Susan Towne Schaefer and son, Milo L. Schaefer, IV following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

WILBUR "BILL" JOHNSON

LEICESTER —Wilbur Clark “Bill” Johnson, 87, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at his home in Leicester.

He was born in Agawam, Mass., on Dec. 30, 1924. He was the son of Paul and Maud (Hess) Johnson. He grew up in Agawam where he received his early education. He attended Agawam High School.

BRIDPORT — Harold Russell Barrett, 71, of Bridport died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home after a battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 27, 1940, in Sharon, Conn., the son of Russell and Hazel (Doane) Barrett.

BEATRICE BRIGGS

NEW HAVEN — Beatrice Simone Gagnon-Tucker-Briggs, 79, of New Haven passed away peacefully in her home on Oct. 4, 2012. Beatrice was born on Nov. 19, 1932. Beatrice was the daughter of Alice and Paul Gagnon.

Beatrice was a very spirited, kind heart and devoted person. She loved to cook for her family and friends, she was an avid reader and crocheter, and she loved to entertain. Beatrice was involved with the city of Vergennes and Bixby Library for many years. She was also a long-time member of the women’s auxiliary of the American Legion Post 14.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
