Alice Tucker

WILLISTON — Alice M. Tucker, 85, of Williston passed away June 20, 2010.

There will be no services. Arrangements are entrusted to Stephen Gregory & Son Cremation Service.

Donations may be made to Vermont Respite House.

Born April 27, 1925, in Willsboro, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Eva Wade. She and her family resided for a time in Vergennes.

Alice is survived by Lee C. Tucker, her husband of 65 years, and her sisters, Lucille Felt and Geraldine Rathbun.

Her eldest son Doug predeceased her in 2009.

Marthena Smith

MIDDLEBURY — After nearly 90 years of living, Marthena Smith, a.k.a., Marty, Makka, Mom, died with honor and grace in her home on June 19, 2010.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in her home at 1 South St., Middlebury, on July 10 at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please give donations in her name to Porter Medical Center — Partners in Palliative Care, 108 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753, or Addison County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

She was born Aug. 16, 1920.

Bob McClaran

LINCOLN — An open memorial service for Bob McClaran of Lincoln, who died April 29, will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, at the Ripton United Methodist Church. It will be followed by a joint burial of the ashes of Bob and his wife of 68 years, Dotty McClaran, who died March 15, at Cooks Cemetery in Ripton, Vermont. Immediately following will be a potluck at the Ripton Community House. All are welcome.

Linda Atkins

FERRISBURGH — Linda T. Atkins, 67, of Ferrisburgh died at home Saturday evening, June 20, surrounded by her family after a brief and stoic battle with cancer.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, June 23, at North Ferrisburgh Cemetery.

She was the daughter of Rupert L. and Julia (Larrow) Thorpe.

Glenna Reed

BRANDON — Glenna Reed, 88, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at her home in Brandon.

The graveside committal service and burial took place on Friday, June 18, at the family lot in Forest Dale Cemetery. The Rev. Margaret Fletcher, rector at St. Thomas & Grace Episcopal Churches, officiated.

She was born in Leicester on Aug. 18, 1921. She was the daughter of George and Pauline (Sweeney) White.

Howard Miller

CAPE CORAL, Fla./VERGENNES — Howard F. Miller of Cape Coral, Fla., and Vergennes died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in Cape Coral Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, at Vergennes Congregational Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 21, at noon, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, will officiate. The graveside committal service and burial will follow in the family lot at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, from 11 a.m. until service time at noon.

KAPA’A, HAWAII — Edward Michael Lee Valko, former resident of Middlebury, died May 24, 2010, in Kapa’a, on the island of Kauai with loving family by his side.

BRISTOL — Edward Abraham Tucker Sr., 87, died Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Health Care surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, June 15, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. Interment was in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol.

He was born in Vergennes on Oct. 20, 1922, the son of Carson A. and Gladys L. Tucker.

Beatrice McLean

MONKTON — Beatrice E. McLean, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 13, 2010.

A private service will be held in Massachusetts at a later date.

She was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Thelma E. (Forst) Dolloff.

She grew up in Braintree, Mass., and in 1941 she married Walter E. McLean, who predeceased her in 1969. They made their home in Weymouth, Mass.

Beatrice moved to Vermont in 1975.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
