Helen B. Layn

MONKTON — Helen B. Layn died at home on Sept. 16, 2011, at the age of 89.

She was born June 30, 1922, in Hinesburg, the daughter of Roy and Ila (Little) Burritt.

Robert D. Scott

SADDLE RIVER, N.J. — Robert D. Scott, 94, a 62-year resident of Saddle River, N.J., died on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. 

He was born to Andrew Scott Jr. and Jennie Sterling on Oct. 13, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and grew up in Ridgewood, N.J. He attended Ridgewood High School and was a graduate of Colgate University in 1938. He received an M.B.A. degree from New York University. During World War II, he served in New Guinea and the Philippines in the signal corps.

Marion N. Barnett

MIDDLEBURY — Marion N. Barnett, 101, died Aug. 26, 2011, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Middlebury Oct. 31, 1909, the daughter of the late Edward S. and Bertha May (Fales) Barnett.

She graduated from Milford (Conn.) High School, class of 1927, and Grace Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1931. She did postgraduate studies in operating room techniques.

BRANDON — Michael A. Shackett, 52, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at his home in Brandon.

He was born in Middlebury on Sept. 26, 1958. He was the son of Joseph and Mary (Bougor) Shackett. He grew up in Middlebury and received his early education in Middlebury and Bridport schools.

Donald Charles Wetmore

BRANDON — Donald Charles “Buddy” Wetmore, 85, of Brandon died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Brandon on April 2, 1926. He was the son of Henry and Mabel (Cheney) Wetmore.
He graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1944.
He managed the Brandon Inn for several years. He afterwards owned and operated the Brandon Gift Shop.

Robert LaFiandra, M.D.

MIDDLEBURY — Robert P. LaFiandra, 71, loving father and husband, enthusiastic gardener and caring doctor, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Sept. 3.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he studied medicine before joining the Public Health Service and served in Chile, where he developed a love for South American culture.

BRISTOL — Maurice Ellsworth Culver, 79, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born in Ripton on Aug. 25, 1932, the son of Leon and Ruth (Haskins) Culver.

Gail R. Corsi

NORTH CLARENDON — Gail R. Corsi, 65, of North Clarendon died Monday evening, Aug. 29, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following an extended illness.

Born on July 9, 1946, in Rutland, the daughter of Sumner J. and Alice Rose (Carlisle) Page, Ms. Corsi grew up in North Clarendon and graduated from the Rutland High School in 1964. She worked for over 30 years for the United States Postal Service almost exclusively in her hometown post office in North Clarendon as a postal clerk, retiring in 2000.

Elaine Marie Dearborn

BRISTOL — Elaine Marie Dearborn, 59, died Aug. 23, 2011, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 6, 1952, the daughter of Ceylon and Gwen (Thompson) Dearborn.

She was a well-known character in the community. She could always be found riding her bike, out walking, or enjoying a cup of tea at the bakery in the company of her many friends. She was an active member of the “Pocock Entertainment Committee” — infamous for their zany, and sometimes jaw-dropping, floats in the annual Fourth of July parade.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
