BARBARA J. PRESTON

BRISTOL — Barbara J. Preston, 65, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013, at her home in Bristol surrounded by her family.

She was born on Jan. 10, 1948, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Barbara was a member of Real Estate Million Dollar Club in New Orleans, La. She moved here to Bristol in 1999 and she worked at Shaw’s Supermarket at checkout counter where she met a lot of wonderful people.

PAULINE B. SMITH

VERGENNES — Pauline B. Smith, 87, passed away Monday, June 10, 2013, at her home in Vergennes.

She was born Jan. 16, 1926, in East Corinth, the daughter of Alphonse and Eva L’Heureux.

She grew up in Vershire and they moved to Shoreham. She married Oliver Smith on April 16, 1967, and they lived in Panton, where they farmed together until 1984. Then she moved to MacDonough Drive in Vergennes, where she lived for the last 29 years. She enjoyed gardening, flower beds, and watching granddaughter, grandson, and her great-grandchildren.

BRANDON/SUMTERVILLE, Fla. — Harry Leonard Forrest, 78, formerly of Brandon, died April 19, 2013, at Lane Purcell Hospice House in Sumterville, Fla.

DONALD MITCHELL

FOREST DALE — A private graveside committal service and burial for Donald W. Mitchell, 64, son of the late Harold and Betty Mitchell, who died May 29, 2013, at the Gosnell House in Scarborough, Maine, will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Forest Dale Cemetery.

Those wishing to pay their respects to the family may do so, on Wednesday, June 12, from 2-4 p.m. at the home of Pike & Colleen Mitchell in Forest Dale.

MARY “MIMI” FOX

FOREST DALE — Mary “Mimi” Scarlett Fox, formerly of Forest Dale, died at Milford Hospital in Milford, Conn., on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. She was 84 years old.

Born May 10, 1928, in New Britain, Conn., to George and Julia Cunningham Scarlett, Mimi majored in Education and graduated from Trinity College, Burlington, Vt., in 1949 and began her teaching career at West Rutland High School, then moved to Washington, D.C., where she married her husband, John, in June 1951.

MARILYN HOWELL

PEABODY, Mass. — Marilyn Howell, 73, of Peabody, Mass., formerly of Charlotte, Vt., died March 27, 2013.

The daughter of Archie and Beatrice Armell, she graduated from Vergennes High School. Among the survivors are four local brothers and extended family.

A memorial service will be June 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the North Ferrisburgh Methodist Church.

STANTON KIRBY

BRIDPORT — Stanton Hazen Kirby, 80, of Bridport, formerly of Randolph, died May 30, 2013, of complications due to pulmonary fibrosis.

He was born March 30, 1933, in Rochester. His parents were George and Lillian (Hazen) Kirby. He attended Rochester schools, graduating in 1951. He enlisted in the Air Force in November 1951 and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base before shipping out to Korea and Japan with the 13th Bomb Squadron, where he served as a flight engineer.

KATHERINE LATHROP

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Katherine Carolyn Lathrop, “Maa,” went from the arms of her daughter to those of her Lord from her home on May 30 following a long, feisty fight with chronic pulmonary disease.

Kay charged into this world officially on March 16, 1920, although she always claimed March 17 as her date of celebration. She was the fifth of seven children born to Frederick and Ada (Isles) Valiquette.

BRIDPORT — Donna J. Lawton, 60, of Bridport died Monday evening June 3, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of hospice.

EDITH MCKEIGHAN

BRANDON — Edith Mae McKeighan, 79, of Brandon died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. 

She was born May 3, 1934, in Underhill, the daughter of Kenneth and Doris (Lyons) Alger. She moved with her family to Brandon in 1941 and graduated from Brandon High School in 1952. She and George W. McKeighan were married in Brandon on Aug. 1, 1952.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
