Clara Jewell

FERRISBURGH — Clara A. Jewell, 87, of Ferrisburgh died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Burlington Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

She was born March 10, 1923, in Panton, the daughter of Joseph and Minnie Jerome Miner.

She is survived by her children, George and Nancy Jewell, John Jewell and Linda Todd, Gene and Marie Jewell, Kevin and Sandra Jewell, and Peter and Donna Jewell; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Harold Manning

PAWLET — Harold “Bugie” Francis Manning, 69, of Pawlet died Friday, May 21, 2010, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Hydeville on June 1, 1940. He was the son of Simon and Mildred (Wade) Manning.

He grew up in Hydeville, where he received his early education. He graduated from Wallingford High School, class of 1958. Following graduation he joined the United States Army National Guard.

Howard Welch

BRIDPORT — Howard A. Welch, 90, died Thursday evening, May 20, 2010, at his home in Bridport surrounded by his family.

Born Oct. 13, 1919, in New Haven, he was the son of Aaron and Julia (Morton) Welch. He married Marion Stagg on Feb. 4, 1941.

He was a dairy farmer in Bridport for many years and was a Bridport fireman for 11 years and bus driver for Bridport for 41 years. He was also employed at Frontier Town in New York as a stagecoach driver for 20 years.

Leonard Arnold

ORWELL — Leonard Francis Arnold, 91, of Orwell died Tuesday evening, May 18, 2010, at Mountain View Center Genesis Elder Care.

A memorial service was held, Monday, May 24, at 11 a.m., at Benson United Church, immediately followed by reception at Benson Town Hall. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery in Orwell.

He was born July 29, 1918, in Benson, the son of Ford and Lottie Arnold. He drove school bus in Orwell for over 30 years, was a dairy farmer until retirement and also ran a milk can pickup route for many years.

Caroline Bartlett

BRANDON — Caroline Susan May Bartlett of Brandon died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, surrounded by her family.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. There will be no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495-1460.

Marianna Burke

BRIDPORT — A private graveside committal service and burial for Marianna Palmer Burke, who died Dec. 3, 2009, was held Thursday, May 20, at the family lot in Bridport Central Cemetery. Gary Stanley officiated.

 

William Clappin

SALISBURY — William Paul Clappin, 78, a retired Foreign Service Officer, died May 17, 2010, at his home in Salisbury.

He will be interred in a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. As he was a prolific supporter of numerous charities, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

He was born in Green Point, Long Island, N.Y., on Jan. 12, 1932. He graduated from Chaminade High School on Long Island and attended Cornell University.

Harland Wendel

BRISTOL — Harland A. Wendel, 82, died Monday, May 17, 2010, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury with his family by his side.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, at Bristol Federated Church. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol.

Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol on Thursday, May 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Bristol Volunteer Fire Department, North Street, Bristol, VT 05443.

Marie Poulin

VERGENNES — Sister Marie Therese Poulin, RSM, 84, died at McAuley Center, Farmington Hills, Mich., on May 15, 2010. She was a Sister of Mercy for 62 years.

On May 18, a 3 p.m. welcoming service and a 7 p.m. Scripture/remembrance prayer was held at McAuley Center, 28750 Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills, Mich. On May 19, at 10:15 a.m., the Mass of Resurrection was offered in McAuley’s Sacred Heart Chapel. Burial followed in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Yvan Cote

ESSEX — Yvan “Ski” Cote, 65, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at the A.W. Rich Funeral Home — Essex Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 21, at 6 p.m. at A.W. Rich Funeral Home — Essex Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Moore officiating. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
