Janet Elva Landon Duffany

RUTLAND — Janet Elva Landon Duffany, 77, formerly of Bridport, died Monday morning, March 5, 2012, at the Pines at Rutland.

She was born April 6, 1934, in Florence, the daughter of the late Fred and Helen (Martin) Landon Sr. She attended schools in Florence and Orwell.

She married E. Arthur Duffany in Bridport on Feb. 12, 1955.

She retired from Simmonds Precision-Hercules, B.F. Goodrich Corp., and had previously been employed by Shoreham Co-op.

Joseph “Joey” Chastenay

LUDLOW — Joseph “Joey” Chastenay, 58, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at the Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow.

He was born on Feb. 4, 1954. He was a former resident of the Brandon Training School.

Surviving is his guardian, Duncan Schroeter of Ipswich, Mass.

The graveside committal service and burial will take place on Friday, March 9, 2012, at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, will officiate.

Marie Hunsucker Baldwin

LOS ANGELES/MIDDLEBURY — Marie Hunsucker Baldwin, 88, of Los Angeles, Calif., formerly of Middlebury, died Feb. 28, 2012.

She was born Dec. 22, 1923. She lived in Middlebury for 46 years, from 1958 to 2004. She was the widow of Brewster Baldwin, who taught geology at Middlebury College.

She is survived by three children: daughter Jean McLevedge and sons David Baldwin and Stephen Baldwin.

Dan C. Douglas

BRANDON — Dan C. Douglas Sr., 85, of Brandon died Feb. 28, 2012.

He was born in Brandon on May 27, 1926. He was one of 11 children born to Patrick Francis and Elizabeth “Bessie” (Grace) Douglas. He grew up in Brandon and received his education in local Brandon schools.

Donald James Waite

BRANDON — Donald James Waite, 57, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born in Middlebury on May 5, 1954. He was the son of Edward and Adeline (Fernette) Waite. He was a Brandon resident all his life. He received his education in local Brandon schools and attended Otter Valley Union High School.

Cecil Morse

RIPTON — Early Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2012, God looked around the mountain and observed many cords of wood, cut and split. The pantry shelves and freezer were stocked and the misfit pets in the barn were content. He noticed your tired face, worn and gnarled hands, and he knew it was time for your body to rest.

Shirley Marguerite Martin

BRANDON — Shirley Marguerite Martin, 88, of Brandon died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Sudbury on Nov. 3, 1923. She was the daughter of Charles and Flora (Dimick) Atwood. She graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1941. On April 27, 1944, she married Thomas W. Martin in Norfolk, Va. He predeceased her Oct. 13, 1988.

Carl Murray Griffin

SUDBURY — Carl Murray Griffin, 71, of Sudbury died Feb. 23, 2012, at Saratoga (N.Y.) Hospital.

He was born in Rutland on Sept. 21, 1940. He was the son of Murray and Jennie (Paine) Griffin. He received his early education in Burr Pond School and graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1959.

Deborah Jean Campbell

RUTLAND — Deborah Jean Campbell, 57, died Feb. 21, 2012, from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident on Lincoln Avenue in Rutland.

She was born in Albany, N.Y., on Sept. 9, 1954. She was the daughter of John and Helena (Deming) Plue Sr. She received her education in Maple Hill High School in Castleton, N.Y.

She was a resident of Rutland since 2007, moving there from Middlebury. Relatives say she enjoyed crocheting, bingo, and arts and crafts. She was a published author; her book “The Night Rape” was published in 1989.

Luther Gager Pitkin

BRISTOL — Luther Gager Pitkin, 95, passed away peacefully at his home in Bristol on Feb. 19, 2012. He was born in North Coventry, Conn., on June 24, 1916, to Robert William Pitkin and Minnie Mabel Chamberlin. He graduated from Warwick, (R.I.) High School in 1934 and from Wentworth Institute as a tool and die maker in 1936.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
