EMELDA DAHMS

LEBANON, Ohio — Emelda (Spenard) Dahms, 63, of Lebanon, Ohio, died on Aug. 19, 2013.

She was born in Wyandotte, Mich., on March 16, 1950. She graduated from Middlebury Union High School in Middlebury, Vt., and Tufts University.

She held a number of positions during her working life including registrar of Sinclair Community College and office manager for The Architectural Group of Dayton, Ohio. She was a “world class” jigsaw puzzler, placing high in a number of national competitions.

AGATHA JAMES

BRISTOL — Agatha C. James, 89, died peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at her home in Bristol after a short illness. She was born July 21, 1924, in Sandisfield, Mass., the daughter of Olimpio and Augusta (Zaccara) Cartinelli.

After graduating from high school in Sheffield, Mass., she was employed as a nurse’s aide in a hospital in Middletown, Conn., where she met and married her husband of 51 years, Frank P. James.

MARY ANN RILEY

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Ann Riley, 90, of Middlebury died peaceful with family at her side on Aug. 23, 2013.

Friends and acquaintances are invited to a celebration of her life on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury.

WINSTON “BUD” MEUNIER

SANTA ROSA, CALIF. — Retired Tec. Sgt. Winston “Bud” Kittell Meunier passed away peacefully on Friday Jan. 19, 2013, at home in Santa Rosa, California. He was born June 28, 1924, to Oscar and Irena (Kittell) Meunier.

RUTH FRENCH

MONKTON — Ruth Elizabeth (Meader) French passed away on Aug. 19, 2013, at her home in Monkton. She was born in Monkton June 19, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Edna (Shiverette) Meader.

She graduated from Bristol High School in the class of 1931 and Castleton Normal School in 1933. Ruth married Randall French in Monkton on June 25, 1942. She was active in town affairs, serving as Justice of the Peace for 14 years. Ruth taught elementary school in Monkton for 26 years, retiring in 1970. She worked summers on the dairy farm with her husband, Randall.

TROY GRAY

FAIRLEE — Troy Dean Gray, 45, of Fairlee, Vt., took his own life on Aug. 13, 2013, at his residence in Fairlee.

Born in Lebanon, N.H., on Oct. 24, 1967, he was the son of Herbert and Rebecca (Beede) Gray. He graduated from Reisch American School of Auctioneering in June of 1982 while he was still in high school. Troy graduated from Thetford Academy in 1985. He married Rhonda Gravel Gray on Feb. 14, 2009, in Fairlee.

DONALD HAGEN

MIDDLEBURY — Donald J. Hagen Jr., 59, of Middlebury, died unexpectedly on Aug. 14, 2013.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 17, 1954. He graduated from Island Trees High School on Long Island in 1972. He attended Nassau Community College for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War and was released with an honorable discharge.

After working for York Industries in Garden City, N.Y., he relocated to Vermont.

JOHN RUNYON

MIDDLEBURY — John Lewis Runyon died Saturday, Aug. 17, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, following a short and aggressive bout with recurrent melanoma.

He was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Glen Ridge, N.J., the son of Mefford Ross Runyon and Janet Benson, both of New Jersey.

THOMAS WARD

SHELBURNE — Thomas Edward Ward, Jr., 88, died after a brief illness on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at his home at Wake Robin, Shelburne, Vt. surrounded by family.

He was born in 1925, in Flushing, N.Y., to Thomas and Edith (Smythe) Ward. He graduated from Kent School in Kent, Conn. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he graduated from Yale University in 1950 and attended the Colorado School of Mines.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
