Phyllis Pitkin

BRISTOL—Phyllis Glendine Rhodes Pitkin of Bristol died peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 30, 2012, one day after her 92nd birthday at the care home of Kathy and George Forand where she received loving care.

She was born in Lincoln on May 29, 1920, to Winfred and Lois (Lafayette) Rhodes. She graduated from Bristol High School in 1936 and attended the University of Vermont with the class of 1939. She finished her last coursework and graduated with the class of 1965.

Henry Prickitt

MIDDLEBURY — Henry Beall “Hank” Prickitt, Middlebury College Henry Norman Hudson Professor of English emeritus, died at home in Middlebury on June 4. He was 93 years old. He graduated from Bronxville High School in 1937 and Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College with a major in English Literature and Classics. At Amherst, he excelled in track and cross-country, and enjoyed success in several memorable meets in Madison Square Garden. He earned his PhD from Harvard in 1952, having briefly taught at the Choate School and Penn State.

Chris Rockwood

BRISTOL — Many tears, many friends, but most of all smiles, sent Christopher John Rockwood on his way to meet his dad, George, to celebrate good times on June 2, 2012.

Sylvia Southwick

 

MIDDLEBURY — Sylvia Patricia “Pat” Southwick, 75, a longtime resident, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington.

Born Oct. 21, 1936, in Bridport, she was the daughter of the late Louis S. and Helena (Maheu) Pidgeon.

Pat was a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1954, and was a daycare provider for many years. She was a member of AARP and Little Houses Daycare Providers of Middlebury.

Stephen Wells

BRIDPORT —Stephen W. Wells, 64, of Bridport died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Porter Hospital following a sudden illness.

Born in Enosburg Aug. 14, 1947, he was the son of the late Kenton J. Wells and Geraldine (Longe) Wells Newton.

He was a retired truck driver for S.D. Ireland of Williston.

He served in the United States Army in Vietnam War and was the recipient of a Purple Heart.

He was a member of the American Legion of Middlebury and the V.F.W. of Middlebury. His family says he enjoyed working with and caring for his horses.

Leo Quesnel

BURLINGTON — Leo J. Quesnel, 57, died at his residence in Burlington.
He was born Feb. 15, 1955, in Middlebury, the son of the late Leon J. and Fernande Marie (Faubert) Quesnel. He was a 1974 graduate of Middlebury Union High School.
He was a pressman for many years with George Little Press.
His family says he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.

Rene Poirier

MIDDLEBURY — Rene H. Poirier, 90, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 29, with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Anita, in 2004 and by a son, Roger, in 1959.

Sandra Lee Nyisalosky

MINEVILLE, N.Y. — Sandra Lee (White) Nyisalosky, 41, died early Wednesday morning, May 30, 2012, at Ticonderoga Medical Center, Ticonderoga.
She was born Aug. 15, 1970, in Burlington, Vt., the daughter of Richard and Beverly (Bessette) White. She was a graduate of Champlain Valley Union High School, class of 1988.
She was a former member of the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and also worked at Addison Central School as a para-educator. Her family says she enjoyed card-making, scrapbooking, fishing, camping, gardening, the outdoors and, most of all, spending time with her family.

Helen LaRue

RUTLAND — Helen N. LaRue, 93, died May 29, 2012, at Rutland Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Rutland.
She was born June 22, 1918, in Starksboro, the daughter of Nathan and Jennie (Brown) Morrill.
Her family says she enjoyed working with her hands. She loved to knit and crochet, but also enjoyed time spent gardening. She loved having her hands never be idle.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
