GRACE CLARA (KEEFE) CASEY

 

HINESBURG — Grace Clara (Keefe) Casey of Hinesburg died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011.

She was born in Richmond on June 28, 1917, the daughter of John and Ruth (Gillette) Keefe. She married Francis Casey and in 1946. They bought their house and farm in Hinesburg and raised their family there.

She was a lifelong member of Saint Jude Roman Catholic Church in Hinesburg.

RUSSELL R. PRESTON SR.

 

VERGENNES — Russell R. Preston Sr., 83, of Vergennes died Sunday, Feb. 27, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.

He was born March 19, 1927, in Randolph, the son of Raymond and Margaret (Taft) Preston.

Robert Ryan

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Robert Edward Ryan, 83, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at his home in East Middlebury.

He was born in Whiting on Oct. 12, 1927. He was the son of Robert Leo and Irene (Swenor) Ryan. He received his education in local Whiting schools.

He joined the United States Army in April 1946, completed training and was honorably discharged in August 1946 but was recalled during the Korean Conflict. He served in Korea until his second honorable discharge.

Joseph Widli

PITTSFORD — Joseph R. Widli, 84, of Pittsford died Monday morning, Feb. 21, 2011, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Nov. 27, 1926, the son of Joseph and Grace (Peters) Widli.

A graduate of the New York State Ranger School and the University of Michigan, he served in the Navy during World War II. He served as a state forester in Addison County, and was well known in Addison County for training sulky horses.

Hayden Wetmore

LEICESTER — Hayden William “Mike” Wetmore, 91, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Brandon on March 17, 1919. He was the son of Charles and Grace (Ryder) Wetmore. He received his education in local Brandon schools.

Richard Lyter

NEWPORT, Pa. — Richard W. Lyter Sr., 78, of Buffalo Township, Newport, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in the Holy Spirit Hospital.

He was born Nov. 25, 1932, in Cumberland County to the late Albert and Pauline (Wilbar) Lyter.

He was retired from Sears and was a member of the West Fairview United Methodist Church and the Pennsylvania State Hunters Organization Perry Chapter No. 1. He was a longtime PIAA and AFA softball referee. His family says he enjoyed hunting and spending time in the outdoors, helping other people and especially being with his family.

Marcel Gagnon

ALBANY, N.Y./LINCOLN — Marcel J. Gagnon, 79, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011.

Marcel was born in Limoges, Ontario, Canada, the son of late Albert and Marguerite (LaCroix) Gagnon. Marcel was educated in Ontario before moving to the state of Vermont.

After serving in the United States Army, he relocated to the Albany, N.Y., area, where he worked for Freihofer’s for several years. Marcel also spent over 20 years with the Teamsters 294, specifically working with PennYan Express.

Gilbert Austin

BRANDON — Gilbert Truman Austin, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at his home in Brandon.

He was born in Brandon on Aug. 2, 1929. He was the son of John and Maidie (Fuller) Austin. He grew up in Brandon and received his education in local Brandon schools.

Janice Cousino

BRISTOL — Janice G. Cousino, 72, of Bristol and Homosassa, Fla., died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Health Care surrounded by her loving family following a long illness.

She was born in Lincoln on July 9, 1938, the daughter of Harry and Hattie (Pecott) Grant. She moved to Connecticut where she graduated from high school.

Susan Pickens

RUTLAND — Susan Hattie Pickens, 74, formerly of Brandon, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Haven Manor in Rutland.

She was born in Orange, N.H., on March 6, 1936. She was the daughter of Daniel and Laura (Dorr) Eastman. She received her early education in Orange and Canaan, N.H. schools.

In her earlier years she worked in the housekeeping department at Hanover Hospital. She came with her family to Brandon in 1966 moving from Plainfield, N.H. On March 3, 1969, she married Lee Pickens in Brandon. He predeceased her on July 22, 1989.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
