Lester Hunter Coffin Jr.

 

BRISTOL — Lester Hunter Coffin Jr., 80, of Bristol passed on at home on April 2, 2011.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1930, in Quincy, Mass., the son of Lester H. and Elizabeth (Morris) Coffin.

Lester graduated from Weehawken High School in Weehawken, N.J., and Vermont School of Agriculture, class of 1950.

Mary Ellen (Heffernan) Duprey

 

VERGENNES — Mary Ellen (Heffernan) Duprey, 82, died at the Vergennes Residential Care Home early Monday, April 1, following a protracted series of illnesses.

She was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Starksboro, the daughter of Kevin P. and Zita (LaFayette) Heffernan.

Surviving are her son, Richard Duprey and his wife, Sumiko, of Summerville, S.C.; her daughter Delores Duprey and her partner, Carol Kaufman, of New Milford, Conn.; and her daughter Margott Duprey Skrobisz and her husband, Jan, of Stafford, Va.

Cornelius John “Neil” Kvasnak

 

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. — Cornelius John “Neil” Kvasnak, 92, a resident of Ponte Vedra, died April 3, 2011, at the McGraw Hospice with his loved ones by his side.

He was born in Clairton, Pa., on June 4, 1918. Neil graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1939 and in 1940 he married Alice, his wife of 69 years.

Maurice J. Lahue

 

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Maurice J. Lahue, 89, of Sanford and East Lebanon died Sunday, April 3, 2011, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough after an extended illness.

He was born on Aug. 17, 1921, in Highgate Center, Vt., a son of the late Walter S. and Katherine (Atkins) Lahue.

After graduation from high school, he served in the U.S. Army before and during World War II, participating in the Allied landings in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster for his actions in Sicily.

Ward Stanton “Joe” Langdon

 

CLOVIS, N.M. — Ward Stanton “Joe” Langdon, 74, of Clovis, N.M., died Sunday, April 3, 2011, at his home.

He was born Aug. 4, 1936, in Middlebury, Vt., to Ward Stanton and Leila Ernestine Norton Langdon.

He served in the United States Army from October 1954 to September 1957 as a machine operator. In 1960 he got his bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was a volunteer for the New Haven (Vt.) Fire Department in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He worked at the University of Vermont as a computer technician.

Deborah Jeanne Mills

 

BRANDON— Deborah Jeanne Mills, 51, of Brandon died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in New Britain, Conn., on March 25, 1960. She was the daughter of Robert and Barbara (Bilodeau) Charamut.

She graduated from Newington (Conn.) High School, class of 1978. She afterwards earned her bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Vermont School of Nursing, class of 1982. She returned to Connecticut and worked as a registered nurse at New Britain General Hospital.

Gizela “Gita” (Salamonovitz) Neumann

 

SOUTH STARKSBORO — Gizela “Gita” (Salamonovitz) Neumann, 90, died peacefully at her home in South Starksboro on April 2, 2011.

Born Dec. 16, 1920, in Starina, Slovakia, she was the oldest of five children and the sole survivor of her family after the Holocaust during World War II. Her family says those whose lives she touched will recall her busy hands, making elegant holiday meals, endless pastries, as well as stitching dresses and quilts and knitting afghans.

Her husband, Joseph, predeceased her in 1995.

Edith Scarborough

 

MIDDLEBURY/NEW HAMPSHIRE — Edith Scarborough died April 1, 2011, at Keene Medical Center after a short battle with cancer.

She was born April 4, 1938, in Brattleboro and grew up in East Middlebury.

She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard Scarborough of New Hampshire; her daughter, Linda LaFountain of Brandon; and three grandchildren, Daniel, Nicole and Christopher LaFountain of Brandon.

There will be no public services.

Frederick William Sunderman Jr.

 

MIDDLEBURY — Frederick William Sunderman Jr., MD, died of metastatic cancer in Middlebury on April 1, 2011. He was 79.

Bill was born June 23, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Clara Louise Sunderman and F. William Sunderman Sr. He graduated as valedictorian from Central High School in Philadelphia in 1948, and graduated with a BS degree from Emory University in Atlanta in 1952. In 1955 he earned an MD degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

Bernice M. Baslow

 

BRISTOL — Bernice M. Baslow, 86, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Lincoln, the daughter of Roy and Wava (Greene) Cram.

Her relatives say her family was the most important thing. She loved her garden, flowers and nature.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
