MARY GERMOND

SUDBURY — Mary Katherine Tamiso Germond, 88, of Sudbury, died peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, surrounded by friends, children and grandchildren.

She was born May 16, 1924, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of Rose Francolina and Louis Tamiso, and spent her early years in Hartford, graduating from Bulkley High School in 1942.

As World War II overtook her generation, she went to work at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and was quickly promoted to office manager, after which she met Jim Germond, the man who would be her husband of 55 years.

ARTHUR J. MARKWELL

CORNWALL — Arthur J. “Sparky” Markwell, 53, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at his home in Cornwall.

He was born July 16, 1959, in Springfield, the son of Donald and Deanna (Smith) Markwell.

His family says he was a loving father and caring husband and spent his life being a hardworking farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycling and anything involved with the outdoors.

GORDON MARSHALL

MOORESTOWN, N.J. — Gordon M. Marshall Jr. of Moorestown, N.J., died peacefully at home on Feb. 13, 2013, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1942, in Patterson, N.J., and spent his early years in Chicago and California.

A 1960 graduate of Polytechnic High School in Riverside, Calif., he graduated from Whittier College in 1964. After earning a master’s degree in early American history from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., he taught history at Worcester Polytechnic Institute from 1969-1970.

CHARLES MULCAHY

SUDBURY — Charles E. Mulcahy Sr., 92, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

He was a lifelong resident of Sudbury, born there on Oct. 8, 1920, the son of John Lawrence and Rose (Tully) Mulcahy. He received his education in Sudbury and Brandon schools and later attended the Quoddy Program in Eastport, Maine, where he learned carpentry skills

He entered military service in the U.S. Army on Nov 12, 1943, and served for 20 months in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 25, 1946.

SANDRA WARREN

BRIDPORT — Sandra G. Warren, 75, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Middlebury.

Born Aug. 10, 1937, in Troy, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Edna G. (Watson) Bell.

Sandra was a graduate of Mount Kisco High School, Mount Kisco, N.Y., class of 1955, and Plattsburgh University, class of 1959, where she received her BSN.

VIOLA M. SEARS

VERGENNES — Viola M. Sears, 89, of Vergennes died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by family and loved ones.

She was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Addison, the daughter of George and Plumia Trudeau Mullis.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 14 in Vergennes, St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, and Vergennes Eagles Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard A. Sears, on Aug. 10, 1977.

MARY VOLKERT

MIDDLEBURY — A celebration of the life of Mary Katherine Volkert, 95, of Middlebury, who died Dec. 25, 2012, will be held at the Congregational Church of Middlebury on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 2 p.m.

RICHARD E. HAINES SR.

BRISTOL — Richard E. Haines Sr. died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at his home in Bristol.

He was born on Jan. 17, 1934, in Bristol in the very home he still resided in, the son of Frederick E. and Gladys Ladue Haines and was one of three children.

He married Barbara A. Bennett on Feb. 20, 1955, in Dorchester, Mass. They celebrated their 57th year of marriage last year. They had two children, Marjorie A. and Richard E. Jr.

JOAN ADAMS

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Joan Ann Adams, 73, died at the Vermont Respite House on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, with her family by her side after a short illness.

Joan was born on May 1, 1939, in Panton, the daughter of Neil and Mabel (Danyow) Bull, although Joan was raised by Reka Austin for most of her life. She attended school in Middlebury. On Sept. 6, 1958, she married George W. Adams in Middlebury and together they had four beautiful children. Although they had not been together for many years, George and Joan remained good friends.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
