RUTH LONG

SUDBURY — Ruth Miriam Long,  92, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident that also claimed the life of her daughter, Kathryn Ruth Long.

KATHRYN LONG

SUDBURY — Kathryn Ruth Long, 63, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Brandon that also claimed the life of her mother, Ruth Miriam Long.

She was born in West Springfield, Mass., on Nov. 3, 1950. She was the daughter of Henry and Ruth (Wooliver) Long. She graduated from West Springfield High School, class of 1968. She afterward attended Beverly School of Nursing in Beverly, Mass. She furthered her education at Springfield (Mass.) Community College where she earned her degree in surgical nursing, class of 1971.

IVIS M. MASTERSON

LINCOLN — Ivis Masterson, 91, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury surrounded by her family.

She was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Hanover, N.H., the daughter of James and Marion Wilson Benjamin.

RICHARD OXLEY

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Richard Rasmus Oxley, 60, died Nov. 14, 2013. He died of a heart condition in Phoenix, Ariz., with family at his side.

ROBERT “BOB” WARNER PHILLIPS

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Robert “Bob” Warner Phillips, 86, died on Nov. 14, 2013, at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Family said he had heart problems, trouble walking, and a cyst on his liver, which created conditions that his body could no longer handle.

He was born in Cornwall, Vt., on March 27, 1927, to James and Mary (Warner) Phillips. Four years later he was joined by his sister, Charlotte, which completed the family.

SUSAN TRINKS

STARKSBORO — Our friend Susan Trinks left us at four minutes before noon on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Hospice House in Williston, Vt. She was comforted and cared for by her spouse, Anita Nadeau, loving friends and the caring professionals and volunteers of Hospice House. She fought a 20-year battle with scleroderma, a connective tissue disease and had both knees, hips and shoulders replaced over time. Her determination and strength guided herself, as well as her friends throughout this fight.

CLAIRE VANDERTUIN

MIDDLEBURY — Claire B. Vandertuin, 87, died peacefully on Nov. 17, 2013, at EastView in Middlebury. She was born on Jan. 26, 1926, in Salem, Mass., the oldest daughter of Clement and Theresa Bolles. She graduated from Ipswich High School in Ipswich, Mass., and attended Bridgewater State Teachers College in Massachusetts.

ROBERTA KUPFER

BRANDON — Roberta Anne Kupfer, 88, of Brandon died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at the home of her care provider in Brandon.

She was born in Forestdale on March 19, 1925, the daughter of Louis and Elsie (Devino) Kupfer.

She was a life-long resident of the Brandon area. In her earlier years she enjoyed riding her bicycle around the streets of her neighborhood. She loved her visits to Disney World in Florida with her best friend, and had just visited again this past September.

LAURA H. BURRITT

BRISTOL — Laura H. Burritt, 90, died peacefully at her daughter Nancy’s home in Bristol on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, surrounded by her family and under hospice care.

She was born on March 1, 1923, in Monkton, the daughter of Hervey and Olive (Brown) Hanson. A graduate of Bristol High School, she married George F. Burritt in 1944. She was a homemaker and raised six children.

RAMONA B. ATHERTON

BRISTOL — Ramona B. Atherton, 78, of Bristol passed away Nov. 8, 2013, surrounded by her children.

She was born in Bolton, Vt., on Dec. 8, 1934, the daughter of Joseph and Doris Belanger. She graduated from Waterbury High School in 1952 and married Brian C. Atherton on Sept. 12, 1953, a marriage of 59 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother

Ramona devoted her life to her family. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and was a volunteer at Porter Medical Center.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
