RONALD PIDGEON

VERGENNES — Ronald Edward “Von Ron” Pidgeon, 78, of Vergennes, passed away peacefully at Burlington Health & Rehab on Monday, April 4, 2016, and was met at the pearly gates by his brother, Marcus, and his son, Joseph Edward.

Ron was born at home in North Ferrisburgh, Vt., on May 21, 1937, the son of Edward and Bertha (Quentin) Pidgeon.

DOUGLAS THERRIEN

VERGENNES — Douglas (“Doug”) E. Therrien, 66, of Vergennes passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1949, in Burlington, the son of Arthur L. Therrien and Barbara E. (Demars) Therrien.

JANETTE GENDREAU

STARKSBORO — Janette Mary Brileya Gendreau, 78, passed away March 30, 2016, at UVM Medical Center in Burlington.

She was born June 6, 1937, in Orwell, the daughter Gilbert and Leona Allard Brileya.

She graduated from Whitehall High School in 1955 and the attended the school of cosmetology in Glenn Falls, N.Y. She took care of elderly people for many years.

Her husband, Joseph, predeceased her in 1990.

RICHARD RIVERS

STOCKBRIDGE — Richard H. Rivers, 65, died suddenly of a heart attack on March 23, 2016.

He was born April 11, 1950, in Middlebury, Vt., the son of Dorothy (Harris) and Richard N. Rivers. He graduated from Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon and attended Champlain College before returning to Brandon to operate the family dairy farm with his brother Brian. He helped found the Brandon Farmers’ Market and enjoyed raising and selling vegetables and producing prize-winning maple syrup.

HELEN BURLOCK

VERGENNES — Helen J. Burlock, 86, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

She was born March 17, 1930, in Berlin, the daughter of Guy and Jennie (Locke) Houghton. She graduated from Dow Academy (Franconia, N.H.) in 1948. In 1950 she married Merlin Burlock in Bethlehem, N.H.

She was a member of the Vergennes United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed going to high school and grade school activities and enjoyed road trips.

ELLEN GIBLIN

MIDDLEBURY — Ellen Smith Giblin, 77, educator, active volunteer and faithful Episcopalian, died peacefully in Burlington March 24. Daughter of the Rev. Charles W.F. Smith and Ivy Watkins Smith, Ellen was born in Exeter, N.H. She was a lifelong learner, most recently becoming a Certified Extension Master Gardener through UVM.

ARTHUR GREGOIRE

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Arthur E. Gregoire Jr., 83, of Zephyrhills, Fla., died on March 23, 2016. He was born in Shoreham, Vt., the son of Arthur and Edith (Maheu) Gregoire, on July 6, 1932.

He lived most of his life in Ivoryton, Conn., retiring to Waltham, Maine. In 2009 he moved to Florida year round.

JUTTA GUAY

MIDDLEBURY — Jutta G. Guay, 89, died Saturday morning March 12, 2016, after a long illness.

Jutta was born March 1, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Joseph M. and Gertrude (Heinz) Wettenmann.

She was a graduate of Plattsburgh High School, class of 1945, and attended the University of Southern California.

Jutta and Paul E. Guay married on Aug. 17, 1957.

LAURA ‘COOGIE’ BAKER

LAS VEGAS — Laura Lee “Coogie” Baker, 58, passed away Sunday, March 13, from complications of being a paraplegic from a 1979 auto accident, in Las Vegas.

She was born in Middlebury, Vt. on July 5, 1957, the daughter of Bill and Leona (French) Robinson. A 1975 graduate of Mount Abraham Union High School, she was married in 1983 in Lincoln, Vt. She worked at the Sugar House Restaurant and Sugar Shack.

BYRON MCDONALD

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Byron Aloysius McDonald, born Oct. 30, 1920, passed away while in Hospice care in his home in Seal Beach, on Feb.1, 2016.

Born to parents James Hickman and Theresa (Pittmann) and raised in Pueblo, Colo., Byron, or “Mac” as he was nicknamed, attended Pueblo Central High and the University Colorado at Boulder. Just as the U.S. entered WWII, he was an engineering student enrolled in Civilian Pilot Training, and began his war work at the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, D.C.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
