Russell Mason Spring Jr.

Russell Mason Spring Jr. was born to Thelma and Russell Mason Sr. on June 22, 1926, at his paternal grandparents’ house in Sudbury, Mass. As a baby he was given the apt nickname Sparky, which stuck with him all his life. Immediately upon graduating from Lenox School he joined the Navy as World War II was drawing to a close. After returning from the service he went to Yale on the GI Bill and graduated in 1950. He made many wonderful friends there and kept in touch with them throughout his life.

Carolyn J. Benjamin

MIDDLEBURY — Carolyn J. Benjamin, 72, died early Thursday morning Aug. 16, 2018, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 15, 1945, in Ticonderoga, N.Y. the daughter of Edward A. Bougor Sr. and Florence (Fortier) Bougor.

Carolyn worked as a custodian for Middlebury College for many years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the V.F.W. and American Legion, both of Middlebury.

Michael R. Smith

NEW HAVEN — Michael R. Smith, 58, of New Haven died Aug. 13, 2018, after a sudden illness.

Michael was born July 11, 1960 in Claremont, N.H., the son of Russell and Gloria Smith. Smitty attended high school at Stevens High School, graduating in 1978. He served in the U.S. Navy, being honorably discharged in 1981. After the Navy, Mike worked for the City of Claremont, then started working for Central Vermont Public Service (now Green Mountain Power) in 1984. Mike started as a meter reader and then became a lineman.

Claire Larocque Lowell

ESSEX JUNCTION — Claire Larocque Lowell, born Nov. 3, 1937, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 21, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Lowell, parents Dora and Hyacinthe Larocque, sisters Pauline Berthiaume, Lela Oliver, Rhea Bodette and her brother Rene Larocque.

Lillian Helen Gilman

BARNARD — Lillian Helen Gilman, age 103, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

Mrs. Gilman was born in Dalton, N.H., on Sept. 1, 1914. She was the daughter of Charles and Hannah (Bean) Kelly. She moved with her family to the Lympus area of Bethel as a child. She grew up there and received her early education in local Lympus schools. On June 9, 1931, she married Ariel Hugh Gilman in Bethel. They made their home in Royalton until purchasing their farm in Barnard in 1936.

Ernest J. Franzgrote

SHOREHAM — Ernest J. Franzgrote, 87, died peacefully at home in Shoreham on Aug. 14, 2018, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Amy Douglas, and his two children; Merula Franzgrote (Gregory Marshall), Christoph Franzgrote (Ellen Keel), and four grandchildren; Hannah Marshall, Ben Marshall, Maya Marshall, and Clara Franzgrote. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Helenn Franzgrote. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Joseph Franzgrote.

Joyce Marie Yandow Donnelly

BURLINGTON — Joyce Marie Yandow Donnelly, 82, formerly of North Ferrisburgh, died Aug. 11, 2018, at the UVM Medical Center. Born Feb. 3, 1936, she was the only daughter of Elizabeth A. Shortsleeve and Harris G. Yandow.  Her early years were spent growing up in “The Hollow” where her parents owned a grain and farm machinery business. She attended the Hollow school, graduated from Mt. St. Mary’s Academy in Burlington then went on to Trinity College.

Margaret M. D’Avignon

MIDDLEBURY — Margaret M. D’Avignon, 79, passed away Friday afternoon Aug. 10, 2018, at Porter Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born March 13, 1939, in Ferrisburgh, Vt., the daughter of Walter H. and Hazel (Stearns) Malloy.

Margaret married Clement D’Avignon Nov. 8, 1958.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and had a strong faith in God.

Margaret enjoyed crocheting, gardening, decorating for the holidays and cooking her favorite treats — popcorn balls and peanut brittle.

Larry Booska Memorial Service

BRISTOL — A memorial service for Larry Booska will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol, Vt. Family and friends welcomed.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
