LINCOLN, Vt./FORT DAVIS, Texas — Martha “Marty” Sykes Hansen was born Aug. 18, 1936, to Vera Paschal Sykes and Fred Sykes. She spent her childhood on her parents farm in LaPorte, Ind.

MADISON, Maine — Lucille Henderson died in the early hours of Nov. 1, 2015,  at her home of 70 years in Madison. Her life was very long and good until her steep general decline in the past few months.

JUDITH NORTHROP

VERGENNES — Judith E. Northrop, 70, a longtime resident of Vergennes, passed away onOct. 26, 2015, surrounded by loving family after a short illness.

Judy was born on Dec. 26, 1944, in Middlebury, to Earl and Mildred (Evarts) Johnson.

Judy married William A. Northrop on Nov. 9, 1974.

She graduated from Vergennes Union High School, and retired from IBM in 1999.

She was preceded by her parents, Earl and Mildred

BEATRICE WHITNEY

ATHENS, Ga. — Beatrice Parkhill Whitney, 105, of Athens, Ga., died Monday, Nov. 2, 2015.

Born in Cornwall, Vt., to the late David Arthur and Irene Atwood Parkhill, Beatrice was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Erwin Whitney, and her three sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Mahoney; son, James Whitney; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

FRANKLIN HIER

BRISTOL — Franklin Delano Hier, 82, passed away at Porter Rehab Center, Middlebury, Vt., in the early morning of Oct. 18, 2015, following a brief illness. Frank was born on March 4, 1933, in Bristol,  to William R. and Agnes (Cousino) Hier, the eighth of 10 children.

Frank served in the U.S. Navy as a Metallurgist from 1951-1955. Most of this time he spent aboard the USS Shenandoah, primarily in the Mediterranean. He was discharged in 1955 as an ML2.

THOMAS WARNER

RAYMOND, N.H./FERRISBURGH, Vt.— Thomas A. Warner, 59, died Oct. 15, 2015, at his home in Raymond, N.H., after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 2, 1956, in Ferrisburgh, Vt., son of the late George Warner Sr. and Anna (Caputo) Warner.

PATRICIA PETERS

MIDDLEBURY — Ms. Patricia R. Peters of Middlebury, Vt., passed on to her next life on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, after a brief and intense struggle with cancer.

She is survived by her loving wife, Ms. Val Boni; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Katherine Peters of Rhoadsville, Va.; her sister, Mrs. Kelli Rupe, also of Rhoadsville; her three daughters, Ms. Cassandra L. (Smith) Franklin of Ripton, Vt., Mrs. Katie May (Smith) Snider of Happy Valley, Ore. and Mrs. Crystal R. (Smith) Petruska of Smock, Pa. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.

VERGENNES — Roberta T. Preston, 84, of Vergennes passed away unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at Starr Farm Nursing Center. Roberta was born June 23, 1931, in Randolph, the daughter of Church and Muriel (Fullam) Tabor.

JANICE WHEELOCK

ORLANDO, Fla. — Janice Wheelock of Orlando, Fla., passed away quietly at home with her family on Oct. 21, 2015. She was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Vergennes, Vt.

Janice spent her childhood growing up in Vermont and later moved to Bristol, Conn., with her husband, Robert Wheelock Sr., who predeceased her.

Janice retired from the Aetna Insurance Co. in Hartford, Conn. She spent time with her close friends, Betty and Agnes, often going to shows and dinner. She enjoyed playing slots, cooking for friends and family, traveling and spending time with her dogs.

GENEVIEVE BALDWIN

MIDDLEBURY — Genevieve Baldwin, 98, of Middlebury, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Porter Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Colchester. 

She worked for General Electric and Middlebury College. After her retirement she volunteered at Porter Hospital and Round Robin Thrift Shop.

Survived by a daughter, Annette Cole; a son, William Bielawski from Middlebury; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Emilie Woodbury and Florence Yandow from Burlington.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
