William (Bill) Mandigo

MIDDLEBURY — William (Bill) Mandigo peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Aug. 16, 2018, in Middlebury, Vt.

Bill, age 81, was born in Woonsocket, R.I. to Ellen (née Thistle) and Willie A. Mandigo. After his father passed away, his mother married Earl Whipple, who lovingly raised Bill as his own son.

Gisele Marie (Vanier) Litch

ADDISON — Gisele Marie (Vanier) Litch, 78, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018 at home surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Moose Creek, Ontario, Canada on Oct. 26, 1939, to the late Albert and Simone (Racine) Vanier, she moved to the U.S. in 1948 and married the love of her life, James Litch, Sept. 7, 1957. James predeceased her Jan. 18, 2008.

Joan G. Kelton

MIDDLEBURY — Joan G. Kelton, 83, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018.

She was born in Hanover, N.H. on Sept. 19, 1934, the daughter of Ernest and Virginia Grenon.

Joan graduated from Hartford High School, class of 1953. She then worked for the New England Telephone Company where she met the love of her life, Raymond “Bud” Kelton. They married in June of 1958 and moved to Middlebury in 1963, where they raised their six children.

Clement R. Gagné Jr.

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Clement R. Gagné Jr., 89, passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 17, 2018, following a 30-year battle with cancer.

Dr. Gagné was born to Clement R. Gagné (Gardner) Sr. and Lillian Helen Depelteau in Adams, Mass., on Jan. 14, 1929. He studied at Notre Dame Elementary and Adams High School, and achieved the Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts program. He received his professional doctorate at the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry and did post-graduate studies at Ohio State University and New York University.

Sally Bruch Memorial Service

ADDISON — A life celebration for Sally R. Bruch will be held on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. at the home of Alec and Sarah Sparks, 189 Jersey St., Addison. (Note: There are two Jersey Streets, a north and a south section — the residence is located on the north section of Jersey St. near Goodrich Corners Rd.).

Ernest John Turpin

SHOREHAM — Ernest John Turpin, age 82, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018, at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

Ernie was born in New Haven on March 11, 1936. He was the son of Edgar and Ruth (Naylor) Turpin. He grew up in Shoreham, where he received his early education and had attended Shoreham High School. He served proudly in the United States Army. Following his Honorable Discharge in 1961 he returned home and worked the family farm. He retired from Shoreham Telephone Company in 1998 following 30 years of service.

Russell Mason Spring Jr.

Russell Mason Spring Jr. was born to Thelma and Russell Mason Sr. on June 22, 1926, at his paternal grandparents’ house in Sudbury, Mass. As a baby he was given the apt nickname Sparky, which stuck with him all his life. Immediately upon graduating from Lenox School he joined the Navy as World War II was drawing to a close. After returning from the service he went to Yale on the GI Bill and graduated in 1950. He made many wonderful friends there and kept in touch with them throughout his life.

Carolyn J. Benjamin

MIDDLEBURY — Carolyn J. Benjamin, 72, died early Thursday morning Aug. 16, 2018, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 15, 1945, in Ticonderoga, N.Y. the daughter of Edward A. Bougor Sr. and Florence (Fortier) Bougor.

Carolyn worked as a custodian for Middlebury College for many years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the V.F.W. and American Legion, both of Middlebury.

Michael R. Smith

NEW HAVEN — Michael R. Smith, 58, of New Haven died Aug. 13, 2018, after a sudden illness.

Michael was born July 11, 1960 in Claremont, N.H., the son of Russell and Gloria Smith. Smitty attended high school at Stevens High School, graduating in 1978. He served in the U.S. Navy, being honorably discharged in 1981. After the Navy, Mike worked for the City of Claremont, then started working for Central Vermont Public Service (now Green Mountain Power) in 1984. Mike started as a meter reader and then became a lineman.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
